Season 32 Sports Car Trophy – Round 2 - Sebring International Raceway

The second round of the Season 32 GT races finds us at Sebring, we will be racing on the International Raceway as used in 1967.
The first 12 Hours of Sebring was held on March 15, 1952, and the event would grow to become a major international race. In 1959, the racetrack hosted the first Formula One Grand Prix in the United States. Due to the poor attendance and high costs, the next United States Grand Prix was held at Riverside.

For much of Sebring's history, the track followed a 5.2 miles (8.4 km) layout. In 1967, the Webster Turn between the hairpin and the top of the track was removed and replaced with the faster Green Park Chicane, which was closer to the hairpin and allowed a flat-out run through a very fast corner to the top of the track and the runway; this made the circuit 50 yards longer. The circuit was also widened. Many of these changes were prompted by the 1966 12 Hours where 5 people were killed during the race. Another dangerous section was the Warehouse straight; after a crash where a Porsche went into one of the warehouses and into a crowd, the organizers installed a chicane to move the Warehouse straight further away from the warehouses and buildings. We will use the 1967 layout.

Handicapping and chassis allocation.
This season the Sports Car Trophy will be using a token system which allows drivers to purchase any chassis of their choice for a given number of tokens as published on the championship standings page. Drivers classed as Amateurs will be allocated an additional 10 tokens.  The token allocation will not be managed in SRou this season so (unlike the 67F1 Works and 67F1 Privateer divisions) the tokens available to each driver will not appear in the championship table (when the mouse pointer is hovered over the driver's total).  Rather, the available tokens will be published in the race announcement.  See below.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

BLAST!  Having to pass on this 2nd of the Florida rounds.  I'm sincerely hoping that it will be my last DNE.

Sorry to hear that you will miss out on this race Doni.  Sad

But, now that I am back from R&R it will be my chance to join this series at last. So I hope to re-new my knowledge of these cars and enjoy some tin top racing. Smiley

Quite a fun race.  The tyre pressure patch certainly helps with the handling and braking.  Still too many mistakes to keep up with the pack. Hoping for better on a circuit I'm more familiar with Smiley

The good: I was able to join! Cheesy

The not-so-good: lap 13 or so, I was chasing Dave R. to regain my 5th place (again  Tongue), when over-exuberant right ankle put me off track and behind some barriers. Knowing it's a pretty easy in-out pitlane here, I opted to take a shift-r and do the stop-go instead of trying to work my way back out.

Then I remembered that I'd already done a shift-r and stop-go for a blown engine lap 5 I think it was. Stopped and retired immediately.

So... throwing myself on the mercy of the mods to keep what'll be 7th (or 8th) place points.   Embarrassed

!!!!!! I forgot that we had S/R available and when I got stuck in some haybales, I hit the escape key and quit  Undecided Undecided Undecided

My first race in GT's for a couple of years, and it showed. Great fun whilst it lasted but I was far too inconsistent to hope to get any sort of result.
I was so rusty that I almost opted for the super safe Porsche, but on a circuit like Sebring I felt that it might have been just a little too slow. So, I chose the Mirage hoping that I could put a setup together, in the 45minutes before the race.
The setup was just a little too tail happy, even for me!! and I found myself struggling to avoid side swiping haybales and barriers on corner exits. Apologies to anyone who was affected by a Mirage that might have been a race car in the right hands...... Roll Eyes

Maybe I will get some more practice in before the next rounds  Wink

Congrats Tristan and Axel!

The Ferrari was too strong and so was Tristan. If I had a 5 speed transmission, I may have been able to take advantage of some of Tristan's early mistakes. The Ferrari really pulls away from the Mk. 4 while accelerating. I quickly saw I'd never be able to pass. Especially after seeing I'd have to tail Tristan onto one of the runways and then out brake him to pass. I doubt the Mk4 will out brake anything newer than 1955.

I used the tow to stay close for a few laps. Then I made a small mistake and lost a little distance. Then Tristan began lapping in the 2:41s and I knew I'd never catch him. I stayed close enough to capitalize on any mistake but soon after Phil let me lap him my engine failed. I was braking to enter the first runway with no throttle and suddenly I got a little poof. The crappy Ford engine died with a whimper. It sure wasn't a bang!

After a reset and pit stop, I pushed it hard until the end. I tried to improve my fast lap. I got within .1 seconds on the last lap but 17 gallons of fuel was too much weight to get a good and fast race lap.

I was so rusty that I almost opted for the super safe Porsche, but on a circuit like Sebring I felt that it might have been just a little too slow.

If you could have got into Axel's slipstream the tow may have allowed the Porsche to keep pace.

Thank guys. And thanks Axel, you're getting me to learn to drive some of the other GTs well. I've finally made some setups that work well in the big block GT40s and Mirage at some of the more difficult circuits.

Congrats to Tris, Greg & Axel! That was a good blast while it lasted. I haven't driven the GTs for a while and really struggled mastering the layout of Sebring. Enjoyed the first few laps chasing Axel, but he had enough pace in reserve and I made far too many errors to be a threat (and too slow)  Grin. Ended up 4th in the end after a lonely drive.

Just out of interest what brake bias were people running? Even with the tyre pressure fix I was suffering with the wheel locking bug severely. I do remember it was most prevalent with the big Fords so it could be as simple as car choice.

I used 51%. I used 52% at Daytona. I'm not sure what brake bias I've been using in my recent testing at Nurburgring and Targa Florio. It's likely 52% since I based those setups off my work at Daytona. I've found the spring rate and ride height play a part too regarding locking the wheels under braking.

Thanks for letting me know Greg. I had more front bias at 54%. My setup did have a stiff spring rate and low ride height, so I'll be tweaking those figures for Le Mans next time out.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.
