Season 32 Sports Car Trophy – Round 3 -  Le Mans by night

The second round of the Season 32 GT races finds us at  Le Mans, we will be racing the night version because of the better stability.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans (French: 24 Heures du Mans) is the world's oldest active sports car race in endurance racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, France. It is one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world and is often called the "Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency". The event represents one leg of the Triple Crown of Motorsport; other events being the Indianapolis 500, and the Monaco Grand Prix.

Handicapping and chassis allocation.
This season the Sports Car Trophy will be using a token system which allows drivers to purchase any chassis of their choice for a given number of tokens as published on the championship standings page. Drivers classed as Amateurs will be allocated an additional 10 tokens.  The token allocation will not be managed in SRou this season so (unlike the 67F1 Works and 67F1 Privateer divisions) the tokens available to each driver will not appear in the championship table (when the mouse pointer is hovered over the driver's total).  Rather, the available tokens will be published in the race announcement.  See below.

Almost made it - but my concentration was shot by the end and I just made too many errors.
Hopefully I'll be over my jet lag by the next race  Sad

My throttle was behaving very erratically in practice.  It was randomly jumping around as if the potentiometer was dirty.  I quit the server and checked the logitech profiler and the response to the throttle looked perfect, no jumping.  I went back into the game and recalibrated the wheel but still had the same problem.  Left the server again.  Deleted all the executables. Copied in a fresh GPL.exe from a clean installation and the throttle was cured.  Didn't have time to patch the new executable for the H shifter so had to do the race using the G25 flappy paddles.  Took some getting used to but managed to finish the race.

I'm going to do some more investigations but it looks like the culprit was a corrupted executable. Not sure if anyone else has experienced a problem like this?  Could it be something like this that is causing Fran's over revving problems?

The race was quite fun.  I made a steady start but out braked myself at Mulsanne and lost contact with the leaders completely and ended up last. Had fun fighting back and had a decent battle with Dean but couldn't get anywhere near the leaders.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

First of all sorry to Tris for the contact at the Hunaudieres kink, I touched the gras and lost control...   Roll Eyes
I knew you would catch me again , so I went on to stay in touch with Tim.

Great pace by Greg, grats for a superb win!

Funny thing is, I had to switch my PC in the quali, all the training went well with this spare pc, but when it got a little more crowded on the road, I had very bad framerates. So I copied the setup with 5min to go and changed to the reliable "old" machine.

Gz Greg with a fantastic pace. Sorry for you Tim must have been frustrating.
I almost overslept and feeling dizy I entered qual to see that my mirror I used in practice was gone so I could barely see backwards. And where were those nice steady high 26 s I did in practice? Gone with the wind. Stressing to "find " the float back I went wide twice and almost ended on a hill like Tim cause I wanted to jump back on track. Luckily it was a big back to Phil who had control issues and I managed to slowly spin myself back. Just resigned "finding float" back and finished the race . maybe just maybe I could have fought for a third if pace was there but then again I was way slower than top 5.
I also found out that a bunch of cars in front created a heavy lag so me being alone was ok I guess.

Check your clutch pedal isn't the issue Phil. Mines a bit iffy these days and isn't reliable all the time. I have calibrated around it in most mods but realised last night I haven't done the gt's yet.

I really do not know what I was thinking about when I chose the Porker for this race. Maybe I was just hoping for an easy ride??? Well it was easy....it was also slow!! lol

Against all those muscle bound Fords it was way outclassed and the Mulsanne Straight was just embarrassing  Undecided I was able to make up some time around the twisty bits with the Porker's magic handling. But I tried a little too hard on lap 2 and stuffed it into the wall after White House Esses, any chance of catching the Fords vanished.
A tow down the straight was worth an extra 20mph and 5 secs a lap, but even that was not enough to keep up with the big Fords, so cast adrift at the rear there was zero chance of any fun. With a damaged car I felt that there was little point in continuing so I walked back to the pits.

Grats to Greg on some stunning lap times and to all the finishers.

I know this is a question of setups but I really couldn't understand how Greg could be much quicker than me on the Hunaudieres when he overtook me and I was on his slipstream (only for a few seconds !) Shocked
Maybe this is also a question of weight as I loaded the MKIV for 15 laps and made a reset on last laps.

By the way, I still see 15 laps on the top of this topic... Why there were only 14 ?

My maximum Speed was 354 kph without tow and ~ 365 kph in tow.
I think the main thing is to not use too high revs! 354 kph was with 6450min, as the engine has lots of torque Wink

Grats Greg Wink.... untoutchable !... you shure find a very good setup , not like me Wink....I made few mistakes, as some other guys do , not good preparation too so 2nd is ok for me Cheesy

Congrats Tristan and Axel! For a little while, I thought Axel and Tim might take some points from Tristan. I thought Tristan, Tim and maybe Kinghiro would be faster. I guess it helps that I'm most interested in this mod. This has to be one mod that I've spent a lot more time with than Tristan.

It looks like I was well prepared. You want to read something scary? I was driving better last week.

It's taken me 6 years to get somewhat comfortable with the big Fords. Lately, that's about all I've been driving. I've included a few laps with the Mirage and Chap 2F. With the Mk4, I'm no longer just hanging on and hoping to survive. I'm actually driving the car very hard at times. At the moment, I'm probably driving it as well as I've driven any car in GPL.

Thanks for letting me pass in qualifying, Doni. As I was catching you, I said aloud, "Please don't screw up this lap Doni!" I had plenty of time to try again but I wanted to get a 3:19 so I could try for 3:18 later. I think I crashed both times, I tried to get a 3:18.

That wasn't a very good start. Tristan often starts much better than I do. I think I slid into the wall at the esses. Lap 2 or 3 I hit the wall at the esses again. I locked my RF wheel which sent me straight into the wall. That had me worried. Once I completed 3 laps, I had no worries. The car drove very good after the first 3 laps.

You could say it was a lonely race but time passed very quickly. I was so focused on my braking points and apexes, that it was lap 7 before I paid any attention to what lap we were running.


I really do not know what I was thinking about when I chose the Porker for this race.

I don't either. I was very surprised when I looked at the grid near the end of qualifying and saw that you had a Porsche. The Mk1 is a much better car for this track and it's crappy compared to the other cars. I was surprised Doni didn't take one of the big block Fords too.

The weight plays a big part. Final drive ratio and tire heat are a factor too. I qualified using 2.30:1 for 4th gear (very dangerous to the engine) and 2:27:1 for the race. I had intended to use 2.22:1 for 4th gear (a very good gear for slipstreaming) but when I saw I could easily lead if I could break away, I used 2.27:1 to keep my lap times as low as possible while leading. I used one click higher on the tire pressures for qualifying too. I did a 3:18.67 on my qualifying setup last week but the best I could manage with my race setup was 3:19.58. I tested a lot of different gear sets.

On the registration page with the schedule, it reads 14 laps. I didn't notice the difference on the race page. I'm not sure if I even looked at the lap total while in GPL. I did know I could easily finish with 8 liters per lap.

I was only seeing about 352 kph without a tow. I never really used the tow during the event. 2.22:1 would allow me to hit 354kph but I was losing time under acceleration and two other points on the track. I have been working on some AI for Lemans and I've seen as high as 375 kph in the tow. That's rare but 368 kph is rather common in the Mk4. I think I could keep up with the fastest drivers now. I did a 3:17.22 using my AIs tow and I think I could get into the 3:16s if I kept trying.

I found something interesting last week. The Ferrari won't go as fast in the tow as the Mk4 will without one. I can't get the Ferrari to go faster than 348 kph with a good tow. I once thought I could use the Ferrari and the tow to keep up with Mark and Urban in the Mk4s. No wonder they left me behind after 2 or 3 laps.

Thanks guys. It's nice to get a good solid win occasionally. I'm looking forward to the 71s 50th anniversary. I'd like to refine those setups like I'm presently doing with the heavy GTs.
