Sorry that my quitting the server caused Fulvio to suffer as well.
As usual lately, I had no preparation for this race ( a week away at Centre Parcs with the grandchildren !!! ) so once again I scanned the list of cars still available and picked what looked like a fast option.
I was in danger of failing to post a quali time as I kept making mistakes trying to learn both car and track. One quick lap placed me on the front row, but I was far from happy with the Ferrari 375 around the bankings but with no time to sort the suspension.
Unstable does not even come close to describing the car, I was not confident of reaching the end of the race, but what the heck!! I was on the front row and might get a clear track if I could jump Erling at the start.
Erling's D type suffered from the gearbox curse as he shifted into 2nd and the 5 speed Fezza just outdragged him to Curve Grande. I had discovered that I had to respect the cold tyres and tip toed around the first lap being careful to avoid any heroic moves...even lifting slightly into the banked sections
The gap that I pulled over the first lap was encouraging but the way in which Erling closed up under braking for the chicane was extremely disturbing!!!
I was so busy watching the mirrors for that D type after a couple of laps that I totally missed the entry to Ascari and bounced straight across the gravel, getting a "cut track" warning but I feel guilty about gaining a second or more on Erling
I was slowly easing away from Erling, but each time I had to negotiate a banking my buttocks were clenching. There were a few "moments" which I managed to save but the inevitable happened, Mabel's suspender elastic proved less than adequate in the suspension dept, and the rear end snapped away. I thought I had performed yet another superb save until the tail snapped back the other way and I was launched into La La Land off the top of the banking.
TBH it would have been a miracle to get that car to the flag and if I had won the race I think I would have retired having demonstrated the pinnacle of my driving prowess....but that was never going to happen lol.
Grats to Erling and all finishers and apologies to Fulvio for distracting him at a crucial moment
