This series promised some great entertainment, and Lap 1 Race 1 delivered that when Geoffers and Co went grass cutting at Hugenholtz. perhaps he was unaware of the absolute carnage that ensued
.
When my race prepared shopping trolley eventually made it to that part of the circuit, along with several other cars in close proximity, tarmac space was very limited and in the spirit of the true gentleman drivers that we are, we exchanged paint samples with all the cars around us. I suspect that some exchanges were forced upon drivers who perhaps were not really totally focused on increasing their paint collection but they got some anyway.
Mabel told me later that some competitors even started door handle and mirror collecting!!
But, what it did prove was that small Italian cars are quite robust and do not fall apart upon first contact.
The rest of the race I was driving my socks off in a battle with Bill and Bob, totally perplexed as to why I could not match their acceleration out of the corners or down the main straight?? Obviously I need to look at my gearing and learn how to drive these little cars ( wistfully dreaming of Boss Mustangs here
) Great fun with some close battles
Grats to Erling and the podium guys.
Race 2 I opted for the insanity of the 150mph TCR version ( who in their right mind would drive a car this small at 150mph??!!). This proved to be much quicker than the TC Corsa that I had used in Race 1 and I was able to hassle Fulvio for the first few laps until a couple of minor errors allowed him to pull a couple of seconds clear . Geoffers was giving a masterclass up front and was a distant memory after the first laps. Ziu was a worry behind me with his Simca as he insisted on keeping pace with me for several laps until I think he made a small error and I finally got some heat ( and grip ) into my tyres. the rest of the race was a chase after Fulvio, but I just could not hook up enough fast laps to close the gap before a made a small error and lost all my hard work again.
Grats again to Geoffers and Fulvio.
I did a few laps offline in the Pirin Fiat and I have to say it was the fastest car for me. But these are early days in these cars and I decided to mix up my choice and see how I compared to the rest of you guys. The answer is that I feel I need to do some more practice......why is that always the answer???
