Moderator's Report

Server replay time: 0h00m35s

Lap 4 and Clive Loynes in his Gordini has, once again, caught Fran and his Ferrari. Given the much greater power of the Ferrari it is difficult for Clive to find a passing opportunity and he has to work hard with the little Gordini.
At Aremberg Clive is close behind and gets a better exit from the corner at the top of the hill and begins to close on Fran.
I have watched the replay from the inside of both cars and from overhead to discover why Clive would run into the rear of Fran, on what is effectively a flat out section, where I would expect the Ferrari to pull away.
Fran slows his car for the first slight left hander, perhaps more accurately he stops accelerating at around 85kph. There are no cars ahead of him and he appears to be complete control. Clive on the other hand has buried the gas pedal and is winding up the Gordini to max velocity and finds himself suddenly faced with the rear of a slow Ferrari.
Clive is unable to avoid Fran and the collision occurs. Clive waits for Fran at the bottom of the Hill in a gentlemanly fashion for Fran to reset and regain the place.
In Fran's defence I checked the previous lap and he slowed for the same corner. Normally we would advise drivers to monitor where the car in front is slower, but with a circuit like Nurby that is a little unreasonable.
I suspect that there are not many drivers who would lift for this slight curve, but I cannot penalise Fran for being cautious.
Therefore it is a warning for Clive, but only because he was the car behind and was therefore responsible for making a clean pass. In this case I doubt that anyone would have anticipated the car in front to slow at this corner.

Well I'm looking forward to an fascinating hour of hurling a Vanwall into various hedges.  Shift-R and a stop every lap I suspect.

I'm hoping that we have a rule regarding there not being enough trips past the pits to fit in all the SnG's that I have accumulated.

And I've just watched a replay and made myself feel ill!  surrender

...Shift-R and a stop every lap I suspect.

Good news! Only one stop per lap, no matter how many shift-r's used!

And yeah, Ima use a lot of em today. Meant to get some practice, sh*t happened, and now Space-X is launching the Heavy for the first time (watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbSwFU6tY1c&ab_channel=SpaceX), and space-geek me isn't missing that. So I'll be late today. And unpracticed, with no set-up.  Grin

It's going to take me well over an hour to do 6 laps around here. I dare say the aliens may do 6 laps in 50 odd minutes scooter

I am with you Tris!
Taking a car with disk-brakes that behave same as any stupid drumbrake makes no fun, so I retired after half lap...

Lancia must have built my car out of used tank parts; how I managed to simply drive away from that roll/crash at adenauer forst I'll never know. Although the list of damage and my cars behaviour certainly suggest it was an 'only-just'.
It was a very weird off - I hadn't bottomed out though there at any point in practice on or offline, and qualified on full fuel aswell:

Quote
3m37.460s
Tim Muttram55 - spotters reporting:
medium problems with right rear suspension.
minor problems with left rear tire.

3m40.460s
Tim Muttram55 - spotters reporting:
minor problems with right front tire.
minor problems with right rear tire.
minor problems with right front suspension.
medium problems with left rear suspension.
severe problems with right rear suspension

I spent the rest of he race fighting the car as much as everyone else - I'm eternally grateful to the drivers who waved me back through, although I also enjoyed the scrap with clive until he pulled over.

After successfully managing my brakes for the entire race I finally lost them completely entering Aremburg behind Uli - he was on the left so I fired to the right and hoped he'd seen me early enough to take avoiding action. Unfortunately he didn't so we both danced off into the grass and I had to wait for him to recover before continuing.
The fight continued all the way around the track until we reached Arenburg on the final lap - I'd had a small off a mile or so earlier so was much further back than normal but Uli managed to either lock up or simply lost brakes.
After all that fighting it was a shame to take first in that fashion but points mean prizes so I pressed on harder as I hadn't been involved Grin

Well done to Sam for rounding out the top 3, and Clive for finishing yet again.
A big well done to everyone who managed to finish, that was a bonkers crazy hard race.

Well that was an hour and fifty six minutes of absolute HELL!

Not looked at the details yet but apologies to Fran and Donny are probably in order.

The Gordini is a pain to get off the line at the best of times but when you have left it in neutral it's even more of a challenge.

That put me in real trouble but I was prepared to wait for the inevitable crashes to work my way forwards.  Trouble is that there isn't much space for a spun car to sit on this awful track and I found Fran blocking the road on the first lap.  I think that I was just about bog last after that and have no idea in what order to list the subsequent collisions.

I don't know how accurate the mod is and never will but I think that it may well model what would happen to the brakes of a 1955 car if it were driven like a 2018 car.  The brakes are there, up to a point.  ;-)  You just have to spot it coming!

Not sure if I've raced here before but it was fun even though it feels more like a rally than a race.

I bumped the right rear and I think Doni hit me in the same corner. I also barrel rolled but landed on the wheels and continued with no real ill effects but the car behaved quite oddly after that but it was still drivable. Until it wasn't. Unfortunately that happened at short notice under braking so I reset.

I blew an engine after slipstreaming Dave down the straight and had another reset. At one point I thought Clive had passed before I reset but appeared to land on top of him so apologies Clive.

Looking forward to Silverstone in the Lancia but please run a 65 mod next season. These are fun but not 65 fun.

Congrats Tim, Uli, and Sam! Excellent lap times at the front.

The server seemed to work well. I didn't see any problems this time. I was discoed but I suspect that was here or something with the internet. I immediately tried to open my web browser and it took a few seconds to load my home page. I hope somebody's not trying to ruin online gaming between North America and Europe.

No time for practicing again. I was pleased where I started. I didn't think I'd get myself in much trouble there. I let Clive through as soon as it was convenient. I didn't want to deny him the opportunity to see if he could keep up with the cars in front of us. I was in no shape to try to battle with anybody. My plan was to finish unscathed and see if could post a decent lap time. My car was still running well even though I bounced off a wall once.

I'm getting tired of not finishing races. I didn't think it would be a problem to finish where I was when I discoed. I would have liked to have seen if I could have gained any on Clive and Sam later in the race.

I'm like some of the others. I'm not particularly fond of driving without brakes. If I'm not worried about myself not being able to slow down, I'm worried about the car behind me.

Take care guys.

Oh! and I apologize Sam. I almost ran over you. Had it taken me a fraction of a second longer to figure out where you were, I would have hit you. That would have been shameful. I guess I did get a little bit of good luck. Smiley

Not looked at the details yet but apologies to Fran and Donny are probably in order.
I must say that when you are behind i'm preoccupied.Despite this incident is the first time that a race at Nurb excite me.
The brake are a problem in the first curves after the strong braking at the end of straght, anyway this add some taste to the race.

............... At one point I thought Clive had passed before I reset but appeared to land on top of him so apologies Clive.

LOL that explains it.  I thought that you were way ahead of me and didn't spot you when I had my own spin.  I had just reversed to get the nose aimed in the right direction when you hit me.  I was still in a muddle wondering what the hell had happened when Doni arrived. Sorry again Doni, from both of us.  ;-)

I now think that taking the Gordini was a bad tactical error on a track where there is hardly any room to overtake and the engine lacks enough grunt to take advantage of what few opportunities present themselves.  All the bloke in front has to do is drive down the middle of the track, trying not to crash, and it doesn't leave any room on either side to get past him.

However, I've saved enough cash to take whatever car I want at Silverstone.

Congratulations to Tim, Uli and Sam for the podium and to Evil also on apparently beating Windows10 into submission.

Yes, well done to the guys that made it to the flag! That sure was a tough race. Tried as a I might I couldn't match Tim & Uli's pace up front. After a silly spin on the first lap and dropping down the field I managed to work my way to 3rd place and stayed there to the flag. I enjoyed battling with Clive & Greg early on.

Thanks guys, see you at the next one.

I may have made this race one extra lap too long as it turned into a bit of a marathon. Sorry guys  Undecided

But, it did make for a fascinating race and plenty of time for small mistakes to affect the results  Wink.

For me another completed race is a bonus and I was keen to avoid wrecking my car so that I could test the stability of my rig and see the finish.

Unless I am feeling seriously confident of a podium or possible win at Nurby, I don't really worry about qually or a grid position. There are far too many opportunities for incidents that will allow me to progress up the leader board if I am fast ( and careful ) enough. One or two laps of practice to get myself dialled in and check the gearing is enough.
Tim, Uli and Sam were looking very fast and Greg also looked quick in his Merc. so the race was going to be tough. After Tim's early off I was up to 2nd but under no illusion that he would be back. Tim did catch me and I let him pass...eventually  Roll Eyes and concentrated on getting my car to the finish. Sam also was much quicker and he went past and vanished after I had to do a SnG when my engine blew after a missed upshift...my first blown engine in 55's I think.
But with a large gap back to Martin I was able to continue in 4th and complete a lonely second half of the race.
Grats to Tim Uli and Sam who were in their own race and deserved the podium places.

FWIW and might help those who struggle with the brakes.

I found that my brakes were not really a problem, provided that I concentrated on keeping my left foot ( I left foot brake) OFF the pedal unless I needed to slow the car.
Driving these 55 cars in the early days after they were released, my brakes never seemed to recover to the green state.
It took me a while, but I discovered that on all the other car mods I had got into the habit of keeping my left foot just touching the brake pedal..ready for action. I have my pedals set with zero deadzone so any slight pressure activates the brakes. Not a problem when the brakes don't fade and you have loads of power, but in the 55's it keeps the brakes hot and red. Once I trained myself to move my foot away from brake pedal and to avoid balancing the car through corners using brake and gas, plus only using the brakes when absolutely essential. So check what you are doing with your left foot and try cornering WITHOUT brakes on some of the easier curves, utilising the gears to scrub off speed. You might find that you have more brakes when you really need them.
