Moderator's Report

Round 2 – Summary
Just 1 reported incident.

Server replay time: 0h07m41s

Lap 5 – Turn 1 – Dean Logan and Francesco Molteni
Dean gets a clean exit out of the last turn and chases down Francesco over the start line. As they approach turn 1 Dean tries to overtake on the inside. Francesco turns in at the same point he normally does (i.e. on laps 2, 3 and 4 which is before the standard groove). Contact is made and both drivers spin out.

Francesco took his normal racing line. Although the Vanwall mirrors are not very good Dean clearly disappears from the mirrors before the start line. Which means Francesco should have realised that Dean could be alongside and he should have been prepared to leave room.

Dean did not have 100% overlap at turn-in, so he definitely had not won the corner. In fact he hadn't achieved any overlap when Francesco started to turn in (obvious when viewed from the overhead camera at replay time 0h07m40s).

If Francesco had wanted to defend he should have stayed to the right-hand side of the track down the finish straight and taken a tight line into turn 1. Given that he didn’t do that, Dean was entitled to try for the inside line but he needed much more overlap in the braking zone in order to claim the corner and force Francesco to yield.

Same thing happened here. Sad

AFAIK, I was 6th, ~30 secs behind Clive, about to be lapped (I think), ahead of Doni (who had been), fwiw.

edit: I see someone got a replay, but from before I finished (I did, Scout's honour).

Don't know what happened at the end.  The server saved the replay and the results seem to be correct. I was watching the race (after having blown my engine with 2 laps to go) and there was only Dean to finish when a few people discoed.

The race for me was a cock-up. I decided I needed a little more steering lock so I made the change at the end of practice but unfortunately I went the wrong way. Ended up with not enough lock to get around the hairpin! Only way I could get round was to mount the pavement and bounce off the wall!  Won't be doing that again.  Managed to salvage a few points so it wasn't a complete disaster.  Roll Eyes

Grats to Evil, Uli and Tim.  Fantastic times.

I qualified 5th and finished 5th.  I made a slight error at T1 on lap 2? which let John pounce going into T2.  Very brave and very fair!

I spent some time looking at the rear end of his Vanwall but then he seemed to find some extra pace and cleared off up the road.  I think that he must have hit something because he fell back towards me over the closing stages.  Perhaps wounded.  Grin

It meant that I had just the race that I wanted at a place like this, with nobody in sight in either direction!  Grin

Anyway, I have a stack of Thornton Dollars to spend at IMS!

I was racing under special license as it is my wife's birthday so very pleased to have finished and bagged a few points.

Sorry for no show last night, but I had to play with my folk group out of town and was back home too late.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

I was not expecting to take the win here, especially in the Connaught!!
A week away at Centre Parcs with the grandchildren is NOT good preparation and with only a few tokens left I decided that the Gordini was a challenge too far ( I have not driven the little French car at all), so blew my last 5 tokens on the Connaught and hoped just to survive and score a few points.

Quite a surprise to find myself amongst the front 2 rows in quali running on full race fuel... so I figured that this was one track where a proper low fuel qualifying run was worth a shot  Wink  Front row alongside Tim and his rocket powered Gordini Shocked Shocked...how many of these guys are sandbagging??
I was praying that he would have trouble getting his car off the line quickly, which is the curse of the Gordini, so I was able to take the lead into T1 and give myself a clear track to play on. I pulled a small gap before Tim got the rubber band fully wound up in his car and so was able to control the gap for the first half of the race until he dropped back. The biggest problem after that was staying focused and I lost count of how many times I hit the bales at T3!!
Uli was a safe distance behind in 2nd place and provided that I did not make any big errors I felt that I could keep him far enough away to be safe. ...... until I looked at the fuel tank with 8 laps to go  Shocked Shocked Shocked
It showed just 2.5 galls?? Was that enough?? The last laps were a case of short shifting and avoiding max revs, but it did not appear to affect my laptimes too much, at least not enough for Uli to catch me.
So, a win that I was not expecting around a track like this.  Smiley

Grats to Uli and Tim, plus all those who survived until the finish.

Well A totally unexpected result I was thinking the field would be full of Gordinis and Connaughts (Which it generally was). So decided to spent a few more coins on a Vanwall in the expectancy (Hope) that having disc brakes they might be easier to keep under control as they "Should" cool quicker. Not sure if that is the case but if it is then thank God I didn't take something with drums. By lap 22 I was only using them in anger at 2 corners using quick dabs and the gears to control entry speed everywhere else. By the end of the race I was on 1st name terms with most of the bales at Virage du Lycee and although I couldn't feel anything drastically wrong my later lap times in part due to brakes fell away quite dramatically so I think I was carrying some damage.

It all seemed under control up to lap 20 and had pulled a few 100yds on Clive and was still seeing glimpses of FMG ahead on some parts of the track.

Qualified  7th (Really 6th as Dean seemed to have a problem and started from the back). The start seemed very good and when Samb spun on lap 1 I was up to 5th. Onto Lap 2 and although the replay doesn't make it look wild from my cockpit Clive clipped the inside curve of T1 and went very sideways taking curb on the outside as he recovered. I floored it and stuffed it up the inside then prayed the brakes would come to my rescue. Fortunately they did and Clive was aware enough to see I was there and I was up to 4th.

I was able to slowly pull away over the following 15 laps or so and then after a few rookie mistakes which I over used my brakes trying to recover Clive began to come back at me at an alarming rate, this combined with the previously mentioned excursions into the hay lost me even more time. Finally with a lap to go my mirrors were full of his Gordini. I have not been so glad to see the flag for quite a few races. I don't think I would have kept him behind for more than 1 more lap.

Congrats to the podium, Commiserations to the retirements. and Thanks Clive for a great race, no time to rest in that one.

TTFN
John.

Unlucky mate, but you did earn 10 tokens for starting so you will have 22 to spend on a car for the next race. You can even afford a Merc SL. Somehow I think there will be a few of those on the grid!

Good call, thanks.
