"Login Failed-General Error"

Just recovered an early saved GTL install from a 32Gb memory stick that I had, and copied that to my HDD.
Thought that I had a working install as it loaded up a Mustang 427 and not a Mini, until I realised that the Mustang was the top of the list in My Garage on this install and would not permit any other car to be selected, just like the 68 1275 Mini was top on the other version...... and still cannot get to the lobby  Undecided

Are you running GTL & GTLConfig in admin mode ?

Can't recall if it should cause the problems you describe if you don't, but it does affect other things so worth checking.

Yep, tried that  Undecided
UPDATE
Currently I am doing a fresh install from the original CD, because Steam insists that my current free space of 2.7 TB is not large enough to accommodate a download of GTL!!?? I never knew that GTL was so big  Undecided
Will report back tomorrow.............

DO NOT USE AN ORIGINAL CD TO PUT GTL ON YOUR WINDOWS 10 PC. YOUR ORIGINAL CD CONTAINS STARFORCE PROTECTION WHICH WASN'T WRITTEN TO WORK WITH WINDOWS 7 ONWARDS.

"Login Failed-General Error"
If you have a "yourname".plr file available to you (find under UserData) that has worked getting you into the lobby before, copy that into your new UserData folder before you try to get to the lobby. It should work straight away without the need to re-register, as the .plr file contains your login details.

OK!! woohoo!!!!!!! I think I have cracked it   After about 5 hrs of banging my head on the top of my G25 wheel.

Win 10 completed a re-install and fortunately did not remove any of the folders on my HDD, so I was able to reconstruct my desktop.
Firstly thanks to all for their help and advice, especially to Tony and Matt for offering their GTL downloads etc.

I have installed Tony's GTL copy as a virgin install ( because it arrived first) and that worked fine OFFLINE with all the std cars and circuits. But, I just could not get access to the lobby no matter how many times I followed the various tutorials on the forum. I tried new identities and p/words and even used an old email account that I know is still acive  Undecided....I got asked for the online key, but never an opportunity to enter the code.

I knew that I had my copy of GTL logged on Steam, so as a last resort I though I would pull in a fresh Steam download and try that. But Steam decided that the 2.7 TB of empty space on my HDD was insufficient for the download and asked if I could clear some old files to make room!!!??

Then I discovered a menu on Steam with " verify integrity of game files " as an option, so I figured that I had nothing to lose by trying that. It produced an alert to 3 files that were corrupted and repaired them. Unfortunately it did not say which files were wrong.

I had kept the old GTL folder that carried EVERYTHING we have used since I joined UKGTL, and that was the GTL that had received the repair. So I fired that massive folder up and it came to life. I was fully expecting to have a 68 1275 mini again, but woohoo!!! I could select any car and drive it.

Then I tried the Multiplayer/Internet option and sailed straight through to the lobby, where I could access the Heartland practice. Strangely, when I tried to insert that into Tony's version before it would not work  Huh

So I figured that I must now have a .plr file that was valid ( I may be old and dumb, but sometimes I have lucid moments!  Wink ) So, I deleted the .plr file in Tony's clean version and copied the one that I knew worked into that install.
So I ( think) that I now have a clean/virgin GTL install with a valid connection to the lobby. Plus I still have my old install working with all of the setups etc, which I can transfer when required.

Next job is to make a copy of the clean install and stuff Tony's Heavy Metal download into it and then try on-line again. But that will have to wait until I have walked the dog...he has 4 legs crossed and is whimpering!!

Thanks again to everyone.

Well almost  Roll Eyes, but I think this must be a very simple fix and something obvious that I am missing.

I have created a copy of the virgin GTL and re-named it GTL American Iron. A shortcut was created and placed on my desktop and tested....GTL opens as the original game.  thumbup1

Re-downloaded a copy of Tony's 1.3mb American Iron car pack, unzipped and directed the install to the GTL American Iron folder. All appeared OK and a lot of stuff was transferred.

Downloaded the Heartland Park circuit from the race post, and directed the install to the same place. The usual install box popped up and appeared to do its job.

Checked with Windows Explorer and the cars and track appeared in the relevant folders under GTL American Iron.

Start game and................boots up OK, but no yank tank cars to select and no Topeka ( Heartland ) tracks either??

The American Iron zip has gamedata as it's top level directory, so you need to unzip it
from the top level GTL directory, or perhaps you have a gamedata within another lower directory now?

And your shortcut does point to the American Iron folder, and not the virgin install ? (I know, stupid question, but still...  Wink)

Now things are working properly, I can see that the tracks are there too  Wink

This evenings task is to sort out the graphics which are a little crude ATM. But that is gonna be easy peasy after the last 24 hrs....................maybe.

On the up side, thanks mainly to you Tony, I have the facility to create dedicated GTL's for each championship series. I also realise that this now means I also have an automatic backup installed and ready to run, so maybe this will be the last marathon session of questions and answers?  Roll Eyes
