Season 34 Historic Trophy – Round 4 – VIR : Virginia International Raceway

Round 4 takes us to Virginia.
In 1955, a group of North Carolina car enthusiasts began their search for a possible racetrack location.
They soon found the perfect site on the state line on land owned by the Foote Family and VIRginia International Raceway opened for business in August of 1957.
The group leased the property as Sports Car Enterprises.
VIR’s first official event was an SCCA race that attracted stars like Carroll Shelby, Carl Haas, Bob Holbert, Augie Pabst, Bob Grossman,
Don Yenko, Dr. Dick Thompson, Walt Hansgen and Bruce Jennings.
Shelby, who would later go on to worldwide fame by winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 and creating the iconic Cobra sports cars in the early 1960s,
won that first feature race at VIR in a Maserati 450S.
The lconic Texan uttered a quote about the track that is remembered to this day, “one lap at VIR is like a hundred at Watkins Glen.”

There is no Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. Remember that lap 1 incidents carry an additional penalty place.

The chassis token system is explained on the Historics Trophy standings page.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

The chassis a driver uses in qualifying are disregarded when determining his token spend.
Note:  This is to cater for the instances when a driver either does not start or inadvertently joins with the wrong chassis and subsequently rejoins the server in another.

Any tokens not spent at the end of the season are ignored and are not used to determine championship positions in the event of a tie.

PRO rules means Shift-Rs are not allowed at any time and the damage model is realistic.

Drivers must complete 50% race distance to score.

Available Tokens:
Note: These are the tokens available to each driver before the 10 tokens are added for making the race start.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.  There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

The corner combinations are a real handful here & I really did not put in enough practice. The benefit was I was not going fast enough to damage the car so ended up with a reasonable finish.

I did that from 1st to last lap   Grin

Why are you unhappy ?
is it forbidden ?  By who ?
Why didn't you do the same ?

All cars I followed did the same during this race.

VIR is a track that favors corner cutting, but it seems not to be a big advantage...

GPL does count even 1 wheel "off the track"!
I try to stay with at least 2 wheels on the tarmac Roll Eyes

Hallo Rainier.

probably i didn't look it up here, but i was sure that the same rule is applied like GPLRacer, you need to have 2 Wheels on the track according to the gentlemen agreements
Its in most leagues i drive or have driven, but it seems i have to study ukgpl rules more....
but kerbs is part of the track Wink

Hehe, 1 of 9 is nice..but i guess no one of that was intended and gave me any advantage Cheesy

Rules say:

Riding the kerbs is permitted but there must always be at least two wheels within the track boundary at any one time. If three or four wheels have been placed outside the track boundary then a driver is deemed to have left the track and will subsequently have to perform a rejoin with the necessary caution this dictates.

PS

if you look at Tris, you see that on track is faster Cheesy

Some tracks need a definition of track boundary to go with the race announcement.   Roll Eyes

Such as the last corner at Hockenheim!  I practiced within the white lines but when I found that even Phil was using the tarmac on the outside I just went with the flow.

Axel is quite right about "keeping 2 wheels on the tarmac", but we are all human and drivers can only expect a penalty if they are :-
a) warned about not cutting the track at a certain point in the race announcement
and/or
b) cut the track consistantly at that point during the race

I confess that I do try to adhere to those guidelines in any race, but when you are driving at the limit sometimes it does not work that way and I was guilty of getting all 4 wheels on the green stuff at times at V.I.R. My percentage score would also have been affected by the 3 or 4 spins that took me off track, plus outbraking myself and over running the corner on a couple of occasions. GPL only records the number of times that you leave the circuit, it makes no allowance for dumb mistakes like mine  Undecided.

If everyone with less than 50% of laps on track is disqualified I would be the winner. Roll Eyes Based on Tristans result it looks as though keeping on the tarmac is the best plan.

It always appeared to me that GPL counts any wheel off the tarmac as being off track.  Do I remember correctly that at Nurburgring everybody has 100% laps off track?
