Season 35 – 1966 Grand Prix – Round 1 – Monza

The first race of this series takes us to the Cathedral of Speed in Italy. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is a race track located near the city of Monza, north of Milan.  Built in the Royal Villa of Monza park in a woodland setting, the circuit has gone through numerous changes over the years.  Perhaps the most striking feature in the park is the steep banked (sopraelevata) curves on the now defunct 10Km variant, first used in 1955.  The original circuit (used between 1922 and 1933) also had an oval section but the banked curves were not as wide or as steep as the later 1955 variant.  The banked circuit was used on four occasions for Formula 1 races; in 1955, 1956, 1960 and finally in 1961 when it was decided that Formula 1 cars were just too fast to be safe on the oval track.   The banked oval section was last used in any capacity in 1969.  From 1962 onwards, the Formula 1 Grand Prix was held on the "road circuit" which by the early 1970s was also deemed to be too fast for Formula 1 cars.  Two chicanes were introduced for 1972 Italian Grand Prix, one at the Ascari curve and another on the approach to the Curva Grande.
The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.
Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the championship specific rules on the championship standings page.
Password: see above
(2) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page - 1966

There is no Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. Remember that lap 1 incidents carry an additional penalty place.

The chassis token system is explained on the Historics Trophy standings page.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

The chassis a driver uses in qualifying are disregarded when determining his token spend.
Note:  This is to cater for the instances when a driver either does not start or inadvertently joins with the wrong chassis and subsequently rejoins the server in another.

Any tokens not spent at the end of the season are ignored and are not used to determine championship positions in the event of a tie.

PRO rules means Shift-Rs are not allowed at any time and the damage model is realistic.

Drivers must complete 50% race distance to score.

Had some great fun in qually with Bill, we were fighting like demons over 8th spot!

The race started carefully and I managed to avoid a couple of cars at the Curva Grande (phew), but that dropped me back and I lost the tow on the leading bunch. Undaunted I pressed on and picked up a few places as drivers retired for various reasons. I managed to gradually reel in Ziu and crept past him into third place. We circulated in close company for a few laps until I put a wheel on the kerb on the inside of Curva Grande. Unfortunately I got into a bit of a slide and Ziu couldn't avoid me. In the ensuing melee, I lost a wheel but I think Ziu could continue. Racing incident for me, I need to get used to racing wheel to wheel without making any mistakes.

Thanks to Axel for the server.

Grats Fran, you have been getting quicker and quicker; it was only a matter of time before you grabbed the top spot. Well done.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error. There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

Grats Fran, you have been getting quicker and quicker;
Thank you Phil.
Monza is not difficult to learn, on other tracks i don't think to be quicker compared to the past.In particular there is Virginia rather indigestible .
Not present in this season but i remeber the last. For this season there is the Ring.

Monza looked after her children last night with 3 Ferraris on the podium & an Italian driver on the top step. Well done Fran on taking the win. Qualifying was a quite intense slipstream battle with Phil. My race did not start well & I was in last spot after the incident at Curva Grande. After that I kept passing cars that had broken down or hit something. Was rather surprised to pass Clive for 2nd spot who was saving the planet by using much less fuel than he actually needed.

Grats to Fran on his first 66 win, and to Billy and Ziu.

Because we have had a break between seasons, I actually spent a little time doing offline practice as I felt that I had lost my way with setups on many of the cars. I recalled that the last time I ran the 66 Honda at Monza I was about 4 secs off the pace!!! So I started again and built a developed a whole new setup. It took about 20 laps but gradually I was getting things to where I wanted them to be. Things are not perfect, but I doubt that you can ever get a 100% perfect setup in GPL.
As normal I did qually on "race fuel" so I was confident that I could challenge all of those Ferraris. But I was concerned about the top speed of those red things and had geared for slipstreaming to protect my engine. A good start saw Bastian and myself get away quickly and I was easily able to stay with him. I made a mistake on lap 2 when I pulled out of the slipstream into Curve Grande and forced Bastian to go wide, which slowed both of us and allowed Axel to close the gap. I should have stayed behind Bastian and allowed him to maintain the pace and the gap back to Axel.
For the next few laps I allowed Bastian to run at his pace and simply short shifted behind him. Then he had a strange moment at Lesmo 1 when he simply slid sideways into the barriers ( his moment of lag probably explains that?). That left me ahead with a couple of seconds back to Axel.

I pushed hard for a few laps to keep Axel beyond any slipstream advantage until he must have gone off somewhere and suddenly I had a healthy lead.
It was about then that I looked at the fuel situation as I was cruising towards Parabolica with 22 laps still to race.  Shocked Shocked Shocked scared scared scared

22 laps still to race and only 10.5 galls of fuel??  which indicated that I needed to use less than 0.5 galls per lap to get to the flag!!?? Immediately I started upshifting much earlier and taking corners in a higher gear, and then realised that I had to reduce top revs even more to get the fuel consumption down.
By now Fran was in 2nd place, but a long way behind and I was frantically trying to work out if he would catch me before the end of the race. Or, should I allow him to catch me and then use his slipstream to save fuel, maybe able to save enough to pass him on the last lap?? My brain was hurting!!

Gradually Fran got closer and closer and although I could easily have lapped 3-4 secs faster I just could not afford the fuel. When he caught me I tried sitting in his slipstream for a lap or two but that meant running higher revs, even with short shifting I was using too much fuel  Undecided and I had to back off even more.
With about 6 laps to go Billy and Ziu were closing fast and it was clear that I was not going to reach the finish and would be one lap short of fuel. The only good thing was that I might just be able to claim 4th as last of the finishers, When David dropped out with one lap to go I was safe in 4th and just managed to start the last lap before the engine coughed and died.
Still not quite sure how I screwed up the fuel by such a huge margin, I only had enough in the tanks for an indicated 17 laps, and with the Honda's thirsty V12 that probably gave me around 14 laps at full race pace. Clearly not enough for what we were supposed to do at Monza!!!

ALl of this is an excuse, To finish first, first you have to finish and I did not get there. Fran, Billy and Ziu did and deserved the champagne.  Wink

Gratulations to you and the other Finishers!
Someone, I think in a Lotus43, came much to near to me at Curva Grande. Made me spin and fall back. After then at Lap 2 my Maserati Engine exploded and spat its camshafts down the road.  Sad Dunno if it was because of the Crash before or just on coincidence.  oops
