Moderator's Report

Summary
An exciting race for most drivers marred by a mass disco for 5 drivers. In lieu of this event it has been decided that a maximum latency of 300mS should be used for all future UKGPL league races. The race was won by JonnyO who qualified 4th position and he was followed home by Greg and Fulvio who qualified 5th and 6th respectively. So the podium reflected the qualifying order as did the lap times.

Server replay time: 0h07m06s

Lap 4 – Dingle Dell – David Rainier and Francesco Molteni
David is on the outside at Westfield fending off an attack from Dave Curtis who has the inside line. Francesco is close behind. As they drop down the slope on the approach to Dingle Dell corner, Dave Curtis takes the position just as David Rainier hits the infamous bump at the bottom of Dingle Dell. This causes the Cooper to “Bottom Out” and consequently David momentarily loses control. His car his bounced to the right into the path of Francesco who is trying to follow Dave Curtis through. Contact is unavoidable, both cars spin out but miraculously they can both continue without needing to reset.

On this lap David’s line was slightly to the left of the groove (David’s normal racing line). Which took him over the bump in the track that is notorious for causing the cars to bottom out with the resulting loss of control. There was nothing either driver could have done to avoid the incident. However, it is worth adjusting a set-up to avoid this situation. A little more ride height should produce the ground clearance which would have allowed David to maintain control when driving off his normal racing line.

Season 35 – 1967 F1 – Round 5 – Brands Hatch

The fifth race in the 1967 F1 series finds us at Brands Hatch in in Kent, England. The first race to be held at Brands Hatch took place on 16th April 1950, it featured 500cc cars competing over a version of the "Indy" circuit (without Druids Hill Bend) in an anti-clockwise direction. During the 1950s the track was extended to include Druids Hill bend, Paddock Hill bend and the racing direction was changed to clockwise. It wasn't until 1960 that the full Grand Prix circuit was created. The British Grand Prix has been held at Brands Hatch on 12 occasions and the European Grand Prix has been held there twice.  The 1966 Grand Prix was won by Jack Brabham and the 1968 race by Jo Siffert driving a Brabham Repco BT19 and a Lotus-Cosworth 49B respectively.  There have also been numerous non-championship Formula 1 races most notably the Race of Champions in 1967 which was won by Dan Gurney in the Eagle-Weslake T1G.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the championship specific rules on the championship standings page.

Lap 12, 8th place, driving well, steady 60fps, bl&^%y screen freeze.

Checked server chat. A few people disconnected before me. Not sure if the problems are related.

7 drivers disconnected so there must be about 9 still racing.

Yes, a bunch of us had screen freeze at the same time (by the #ukgpl chat).

I'd been on the server earlier in the evening for practice & all was ok then.

I have not understood why at lap 22 the fuel was finished! But looking at the setup there is the explanation.I set the liters to 33 instead of the laps.Could be the age? laugh

Checked server replay, 5 drivers were discoed at server replay time 21m45s. No idea what caused that. If I find out I'll try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

For 25+ laps this was one of the best races I ever ran in almost 21 years of GPL. I'd been tracking Gephardt and staying in touch with him for lap after lap, never in any danger of overtaking him but in no danger of being dropped either. I wasn't 20 meters behind him when he discoed on L12. That put me in 7th and then into 6th on the following lap when someone else's disco must have been recorded. That set the stage for the best driving I've ever done, for during the next 13 laps as Bilodeau and Rainier were trailing me close enough for the three of us to have had a spirited conversation as we cruised along together. Lap after lap our times did not differ by so much as hundredths of a second. I have never been party to anything so exciting, and for more than 20 breathtaking minutes.

The magic ended when JohnnyO finally caught up to the three of us and overtook us one-by-one. I should have been an easy overtaking for him, as we were on the widest part of the track just before T4. Somehow I completely bungled my attempt to pick a line and stick to it, eventually driving straight off the track and into the middle of the hay bale rather than take a chance of taking the race leader out. That stuffed me down into 9th place and after that I couldn't do anything right. It was a sad, ignominious way to finish off what really was for 26 laps a race I'll remember forever.  Smiley

Pepe you weren't the only one... Roll Eyes
I had just overtaked some lapped cars when at last lap I lost concentration braking for Surtees putting a tire on the outside edge and spun loosing a long defended second position from Greg attacks that was a couple of seconds behind  Cry
It was an hard race versus my eyes  tearing cause an infection and trying to keep the Braby on tarmac. I failed once in the early race when I went wide at hairpin and Greg passed me after he had had a spin on T1 L1. Then the three leaders had problems and Greg spun again before Dingle Dell so I was second behind Jonny, it won't last, I thought, but just when the dream would have realized I failed.
Grats to podium and commiseration to those discoed.

@Billy: Far back in student-times I was in Linz for a few month on a holliday-job in the big steel-factory... long time ago. I´m sure the city has changed since then. Hope you´ve enjoyed it!

@My and others freeze: I never liked Brands Hatch-Circuit very much. Always when I push there I´ll leave the track soon Sad -like yesterday. Had 2 sudden spins, was unconcentrated the whole race. And suddenly the freeze..
Looking forward to Austria Smiley

Grats Jonny!!! Greg!! and fpolicardi! -well done guys, very good for the championship Smiley
Commiserations to all freezers and drop-outers!

hopefully cu next time, keep your stiff upper lips!!!!!
