Moderator's Report

Summary
An exciting race for most drivers marred by a mass disco for 5 drivers. In lieu of this event it has been decided that a maximum latency of 300mS should be used for all future UKGPL league races. The race was won by JonnyO who qualified 4th position and he was followed home by Greg and Fulvio who qualified 5th and 6th respectively. So the podium reflected the qualifying order as did the lap times.

Server replay time: 0h07m06s

Lap 4 – Dingle Dell – David Rainier and Francesco Molteni
David is on the outside at Westfield fending off an attack from Dave Curtis who has the inside line. Francesco is close behind. As they drop down the slope on the approach to Dingle Dell corner, Dave Curtis takes the position just as David Rainier hits the infamous bump at the bottom of Dingle Dell. This causes the Cooper to “Bottom Out” and consequently David momentarily loses control. His car his bounced to the right into the path of Francesco who is trying to follow Dave Curtis through. Contact is unavoidable, both cars spin out but miraculously they can both continue without needing to reset.

On this lap David’s line was slightly to the left of the groove (David’s normal racing line). Which took him over the bump in the track that is notorious for causing the cars to bottom out with the resulting loss of control. There was nothing either driver could have done to avoid the incident. However, it is worth adjusting a set-up to avoid this situation. A little more ride height should produce the ground clearance which would have allowed David to maintain control when driving off his normal racing line.

Yes, a bunch of us had screen freeze at the same time (by the #ukgpl chat).

I'd been on the server earlier in the evening for practice & all was ok then.

Checked server replay, 5 drivers were discoed at server replay time 21m45s. No idea what caused that. If I find out I'll try to make sure it doesn't happen again.
We've discussed this briefly on the mods forum and arrived at a consensus on Axel's suggestion that the mass disco was probably caused by a single bad connection resulting in several drivers being disconnected at the same time. The screen freeze would have been as a result of the disconnection (quite often a screen freeze is caused by a graphics driver problem but not in this case, 5 drivers would not have had graphics driver problems at exactly the same time at different places on the circuit).

The obvious solution is to set a "max latency limit" each time we run a league race. Sometimes I set this and sometimes I don't. We need to do a few tests to make sure we set a workable latency limit.  Too small and drivers will not be able to connect, too much and we will still be at risk from mass discos.  I'll set up a few test races over the next couple of weeks to try and identify the best setting. Rather than set up a new thread we can post our findings here.

Congrats Jonny! That was a nice drive.

I got lucky. That was a P6 drive not P2. Tristan and Tim still had plenty of time to catch me if they weren't discoed. It's hard to believe Fulvio lost it on the last lap. I bent my car near the midpoint. I was incapable of putting any real pressure on Fulvio after that. I was able to make somewhat of a late charge.

I guess the only thing I did well was keep the car running and kept it on the track most of the time. I'm glad my early spin didn't wreck anybody. It probably would have been worse if I hadn't made that same mistake so many times. Later I made the same mistake that Tim did as he was closing on me. I was never comfortable with my car like Tim. I hoped to run many high 1:33s, instead I ran very few and none in the race.

It wasn't easy keeping a gap to Clive. He was often running near the same pace as me. I hate to think what I'd have been doing in the Honda.

I didn't really want to lap Dave and Eric but I wanted to get as close to Fulvio as I could, in case something happened. Fulvio hadn't spun when I lapped Dave. But he had spun when I lapped Eric. I figured since I slowed Dave I might as well lap Eric too so things were even between them. Those were nice moves guys to let me pass. Thanks.

It took me a long time to grow fond of Brands Hatch. This time it felt like a thorn in my side. A lot of times British tracks frustrate me, but I can't be frustrated with the incredible luck I got.

Thanks for the fun guys. I hope GPL works better for the next one.

Take care.

We need to do a few tests to make sure we set a workable latency limit.

My latency ranges from 0.160-0.200 with UKGPL. Axel's server is usually 0.200 for me. Jonny's latency is probably the worst. With latency over 0.220, I have to be more careful and leave a little more space. Over 0.250 and I give up any real hope of making a safe pass. I've raced with as high as 0.300 but I had to stay at least 2 or 3 car lengths from other cars. Mark Jones and I raced many times on Axel's server. That may have been when my latency to Axel's server was usually 0.220. I'm in the southeast US while Mark lives in New Zealand. We managed to do well but I would see him warping some. I hope a latency limit wouldn't deny Jonny access. It would be like banning Emerson Fittipaldi from F1.

hehehehe thanks Greg!

The race was a little crazy, we were all together at the beginning, Brands Hatch is painful at first until the tires have the right temperature. I was expecting everything to normalize to see what pace we would have. But when I saw the accident I realized I had a great chance. So I was very lucky to win this race, everyone who was in front of me in seconds was out of the way.
As for the rampant disco. I always ran on UKGPL without any problems, crashed in Buenos Aires last season, and some riders run on GPLBrasil without drama. Maybe it was something at the moment.

The race server,UKGPL_4, is up on iGOR for latency testing. Please try to connect and post your findings (good or bad) here.

Big Grats Jonny, GT & FB thumbup1 ...in a somewhat unpredictable race with crash & disco Shocked

Qual:
Only 3rd in my Honda behind Tim (Honda) with a nice laptime Wink

Race:
Tim maybe slept a bit on the starting line & Tris making an opening & I was in the front Cheesy
Lap 4, Tris tries an attack that pushes us both around...later I get sent off track to the audience & my race is over. Later again with a Honda, now it's Tim being sent around by Tris...don't you like Honda?
The least you could do after a race, just a little 'Sry' Cool
