Season 35 – 1966 Grand Prix – Round 5 – Zandvoort

Round 5 of the Historics Trophy  takes us to Zandvoort in the Netherlands.
The first race held on the new permanent Zandvoort circuit was on 7 August 1948. Soon more races followed on the course, with the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix becoming a milestone in 1952. From 1952 until the mid-eighties, heroes like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost braved the challenging course in the Dutch dunes and won at Zandvoort. After the Grand Prix of 1985, the Formula 1 circus left Zandvoort, but the seaside resort and its impressive race track were not forgotten. Many years after the last Grand Prix, the ‘racing drivers of the day’ still talk about their experience on the race track where the challenging corners ‘separated the men from the boys’.
The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.
Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the championship specific rules on the championship standings page.
Password: see above
(2) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page - 1966

There is no Red Zone. Moderating will be on reported incidents only. Remember that lap 1 incidents carry an additional penalty place.

The chassis token system is explained on the Historics Trophy standings page.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

The chassis a driver uses in qualifying are disregarded when determining his token spend.
Note:  This is to cater for the instances when a driver either does not start or inadvertently joins with the wrong chassis and subsequently rejoins the server in another.

Any tokens not spent at the end of the season are ignored and are not used to determine championship positions in the event of a tie.

PRO rules means Shift-Rs are not allowed at any time and the damage model is realistic.

Drivers must complete 50% race distance to score.

Rather surprised myself by qualifying second, although Clives pole time rather put that into perspective. The  rather unsurprised myself by spinning on the exit of Tarzan on lap 4 & unconvieniently beaching the car on the banking.
One of my top tracks so disappointed not to get a longer run.

Several of the faster names were absent from last night's race, which was a surprise, and left us with a reduced grid.
Just like Bill, I like this track and it also really suits my favourite car in 66's ( the 2 litre Brabham BRM ) so I did qually on race fuel, which turned out to be 5 galls too much by the end of the race.

Knowing that I could lap quickly on a clear track was comforting, but I was aware that I had 3 litre cars around me on the grid and they would breeze past my little car on the main straight if I gave them the chance. Given that Tarzan is the only real passing place I could have a problem if a bigger car got ahead of me on lap 1. So, I gave it max beans for the first lap and took a few ( a lot !!) of chances on cold tyres so that I had a cushion when we got to the straight for the first time.
Once I had the safety gap, I was able to settle into a steady lonely race, and maintaining concentration was the biggest problem. Once or twice my ageing brain drifted off and I found myself approaching a corner with absolutely no idea of where I was lol. Fortunately the Brab BRM is very forgiving in the handling department and I was able to retrieve the situation  Roll Eyes.
Sad to see retirements early in the race which diminished the small grid even further. David maintained a pace that prevented me from lapping the field, which had became my target after the first few laps  thumbup1 and Syd nursed his smoking Brabham to the end to claim 3rd spot as last of the finishers.

I was tempted to try for the outright UKGPL lap record for the 66's in the final laps, but I have made that mistake before and ended up throwing away a good result. I hope we see a few more of the regulars back for the next race.

I was 4 on the starting grid. A very small grid with only 7 cars.
(It's a pity Tristan, Iestyn, Gareth and Greg but also Ziu, Bastian, Clive Loynes and Phil were not here)

The very first laps were nice, I was following Billy, Andreas and closely followed by Axel. Clive was already leading with a big gap, I never saw his car during all the race !
Unfortunately,  Axel and Billy had to retired on lap 3  Sad

But during 13 laps, we had, Andreas and me, a very pleasant race ...until Andreas blowed his engine !
After this nice race begin, I was alone during the 21 remainder laps. I took less risks because I had no hope to rejoin Clive and no risk to be rejoin by Syd with his smoking car.
I just tried  to not blow my engine and to finish the race.
Only at 2 laps from the end, knowing Syd was 2 laps behind, I tried to improve my best lap and on lap 33 I did 1min28sec992 which is my all time record with the Brabham 2,5 L.

Now, guess what ? I am the new leader of this series.
It's good even if I know Ziu and Clive will quickly take the lead after the next rounds.
