Season 36 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 3 – Brands Hatch

The third race in the 1955 Grand Prix series sees us crossing the English Channel to Brands Hatch in Kent. The first race to be held at Brands Hatch took place on 16th April 1950, it featured 500cc cars competing over a version of the "Indy" circuit (without Druids Hill Bend) in an anti-clockwise direction. During the 1950s the track was extended to include Druids Hill bend, Paddock Hill bend and the racing direction was changed to clockwise. It wasn't until 1960 that the full Grand Prix circuit was created. The British Grand Prix has been held at Brands Hatch on 12 occasions and the European Grand Prix has been held there twice.  The 1966 Grand Prix was won by Jack Brabham and the 1968 race by Jo Siffert driving a Brabham Repco BT19 and a Lotus-Cosworth 49B respectively.  There have also been numerous non-championship Formula 1 races most notably the Race of Champions in 1967 which was won by Dan Gurney in the Eagle-Weslake T1G.

Contratulations Evil, a great drive.

I had hoped to put pressure on later on but I had messed up my race by then and, since we were capable of similar lap times, all that I could have done from where I was throw myself into the trees if I tried to catch you.

Grats to Evil and clive and all finisher.

i did not expect to get third with a vanwall, but most people took the connaught
so i guess i had advantage against Dulima on the straight, but i had to go to the limit.
Some trouble between Greg and Fulvio helped as well.

Cya next.

Thanks for the comments Clive and Bastian. Grats to the podiums and to all finishers.

At the end it was a comfortable win, but when I joined the server and saw that Mr Loynes was piloting the 250F I was worried, because I know how quick that car can be around Brands Hatch.  scared scared

I copied across my setup from Zolder and expected it to be OK....wrong!! For the first few laps during qualifying I was all over the road and most of the scenery too!! Huh
Clive had already posted a low 1:48 lap, so I knew that he was fired up for a battle. With 20 minutes to go until race start I was changing gear ratios and damper settings....with 12 mins to go I was changing the diff and roll bars  Undecided. But finally I got the car to behave and with race fuel on I went looking for a fast lap and to explore what my race pace might be like. I managed to squeeze up to 2nd spot on the grid and thought maybe Clive would have the lead in a faster car when the race started as I did not want to waste any time doing a run on low fuel when I was getting the feel of a heavy Connaught in preparation for the first few laps.
Then PRIB showed a very quick first sector which would put me very close to pole position, so I focused everything on a banzai lap and threw the car across the S/F line and into the habales at Paddock. It was pole position but only by .15 secs...maybe Clive was sandbagging and would simply up his pace?
I was lucky to retain pole and that meant that I would have to fend off Clive and his 5 geared 250F  Undecided.  So I made the decision to blitz the first lap and forget about saving any brakes, it was all about building a gap so that Clive could not out drag me on the straights. It worked, and at the end of lap 1 I was holding a precious 100 mtr lead. Lap 2 was on a knife edge as I had zero brakes left, but I still managed to ease out a few more metres.
By lap 3 I settled into a proper drive and regained control of the brakes, which allowed me to focus on some steady laps. I still expected Clive to wind up his pace and start to close the gap but, except when I made a mistake, the challenge did not come. Then I suspect that he had a "moment" and the gap doubled...now I could relax and simply manage the gap whilst protecting the engine and brakes.
At the end it was a comfortable win, but the early signs were that I was going to have an uphill struggle against faster cars. Quite relieved that I still had the pace in the Connaught to compete, but kind of worried that so many other drivers have started using this car. I thought that I was the only guy who had discovered the secret speed in this car lol.
I might have to fit a turbo on that Gordini??!! Roll Eyes

A splendid victory for my Blue Moose teammie, Clive Gardner!  Pole, FTD & the win.  Superlative performance.

Clive Loynes a fine job to score a good P2.  Only a small slip at half distance cost him a shot at the win.

Bastian a good P3 after a solid drive.

Dulima a close P4 and in the hunt for a podium right up to the flag.  I was close behind him early on and his image was a little shaky.  Dropping back a second or two cured that concern.  Later, I couldn't hold on to him in any event.

A lucky P5 pour moi as clearly Fulvio had the pace on me but an earlier slip put him in my mirrors and despite fighting back, he just couldn't quite manage the pass.  I have to say that I was sweating buckets for the last 10 laps as the pressure was enormous.  Fulvio's judgement was spot-on as he didn't make a charge that put us both at risk and for that, he earns my undying respect.  There were some close moments and I even left room several times in case he came alongside but it just never came.  Back in the day, a minor shunt in these old bangers could be very serious indeed as they weren't fitted with seat belts.  In the days before they became mandatory in all classes, I was an eye-witness to a driver ejection in a sports car at Mosport.  Not something you'll ever forget.

Phil with a distant P7 which was a bit disappointing I'm sure.  He was on for a much higher finish early on.  Poor Greg falling on his sword to avoid pranging Fulvio at Druids and getting truly stuck behind some haybales.  That could only have been infuriating as he had great pace in the tiny Gordini.

Server replay not up yet.

Edit: Quite some time later...

I neglected to mention above that coming off the last corner...Clearways...on the very last lap, Fulvio got a dynamite exit and came within 23/1000 of a second of taking P5.  They don't get much closer than that.

Thanks for the kind words Doni.
Your points (and PaulV's) have moved BlueballsMoose to the top of the team board. For a few seasons it has been a lonely battle against the Soggy Bottom hoards and other well populated teams, with the occasional input from Iestyn.

If anyone fancies joining a team with absolutely no plan or proper management, ( other than a residual handbook from Mrs Fujikawa of the infamous Hiki Waza Team) please feel free to sign away your soul.  Wink  Our comprehensive incentive scheme utilises the subtle skills of another ex Hiki Waza employee, Nikki Nakawaka, who will offer corrective treatment to anyone who fails to perform adequately.

Congrats Clive, Clive, and Bastian!

This race sucked for me. I wish I could have qualified in front of Fulvio. I'd have liked to have seen what I could do in Mr. Loyne's slipstream.

I apologize for the mistake Fulvio. I tried to miss you. I'm glad it didn't do to you what it did to me.

Poor Greg falling on his sword to avoid pranging Fulvio at Druids and getting truly stuck behind some haybales.

I'm not sure I fell on my sword but I did try to limit any damage done. It's been so long or I've never hit those haybales before. I should have tried to go around the left side of them. Smiley Luckily for Fulvio I went left. Had I gone right I probably would have sent him into the haybales and I might have continued unscathed. I suspect Fulvio may have braked better or a little earlier on that lap and I may have braked a little later. It's good example of how cruel GPL can be.

Maybe one day I'll learn to drive these cars well.

Take care guys.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error. There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.
