Season 36 1967F1 – Round 3 –  Willow Springs - Seniors

Season 36 is a joint series between GPL Brazil and UKGPL. This post is for the Senior division.
For Round three we visit Willow Springs International Motorsports Park. It is located in Willow Springs near Rosamond and Lancaster, California. Willow Springs is a historic race track, in existence more than 60 years. It is the oldest permanent road course in the United States. Construction began in 1952, with the inaugural race held on November 23, 1953. The main track is a challenging 2.5-mile (4.0 km) long road course that is unchanged from its original 1953 configuration. The interesting elevation changes and high average speeds make it a favourite of many road racing drivers.

Hi Guys,

First of all I have to send my deep apologies to my friend Enrique Farina, who drove with excellent skill, we have fighted for many laps, then around mid race we touched at T2R for my fault.  I'm ver sad for this Once again I recognise the high level driving of Enrique, for sure he did not deserve not finishing the race.

Best Regards

Hi Tim, the truth is a shame, you were doing a perfect race, you were unattainable, very fast, I made a stupid mistake taking away the victory to AXEL GPL 67, after the accident, although my car was in a position to continue it seemed that I did not It was correct to do so, so I left the server. Congratulations to the podium, and to all the drivers

..thx Mikele, it was annoying as I could pull away quite easy in the Ferrari. Thank you also for the fair start-phase when you gave me room in T1 after my not perfect acceleration, you started like a rocket! My starting position was bad because I had to turn the head to the left to see the flagman, that always confuses me. Maybe this could be edited for future pole-starters?

Before race I did alot of setup-work and could find about a second. During this I found out that toe-in values do alot of effect on this track and  keeps tyre-temperatures low -never had any big temperature-problems during race, maybe the secret here. I also drove with very less tyrepressure in the left front and the right rear, even lesser pressure in the left rear tyre - I learned that of course pressure gets higher the hotter the tyres -great SIM!! Smiley

Congrats to Frank, Doni and Tristan -you made it to the finish guys, well done!
Great we had alot of finishers, well done too!

Hopefully see you all on track next time!

Bit of a crazy, wild finish to our Willow Springs event.  On parking after getting the checker and going to the paddock, I was astonished to see that I was posted as P2 only a tick behind winner, Frank Miele.  I posted at the time, 'HUH?  WTF?'  Only later in scoping the replay cap did I see that Alex and Miguel had shunted off on the last lap to promote everyone following.  Geeezzz...  Bad luck for those two is saying the least.

Off the start, Roberto directly ahead in the Honda was very slow and I easily passed safely on his left.  This left Blue Moose teammie, Evil Clive, just ahead on my right and with a clear path to T1.  I eased off for the corner with not the slightest intention of mounting a challenge as it was clearly Clive's corner.  WAMO!  From my vantage point at the time, it seemed like a lag/ping-related deal as Clive's Cooper seemed to stumble and I couldn't avoid.  From the server cap, it seems that Clive edged down probably believing that the inner lane was clear.  For whatever reason, I am very upset to see my old mate shunted off.  Thankfully, he could at least recover and continue to a good P6 placing.  Without this coming together, well...

In the early laps, it seemed like I could hold the gap to Frank ahead but I had Fulvio giving me fits from behind.  At around 1/4 distance, it seemed like I could finally break away from Fulvio.  By 1/2 distance, he was about 8s behind and Frank only 2s ahead and engaged in a proper duel with Tristan.  By 2/3 distance, we had a nice little train of Tris, Frank and I in close formation.  Tim was long gone in the lead til his tragic disco on Lap29.  Miseralbe luck there, mate.  This promoted me to a tidy P5.  With a couple of laps to run, Tris slid very wide in T2 and Frank pounced and was through for P3.  There was even time for me to slip by for position.  I expected a fierce counter-attack from Tris but it never came.  Got to the flag in an astonished P2 just 1/2s shy of the win.

All in all, a most unexpected result.

My sorrys to Tim, Alex and Alboreto. I believe that each one at the moment is very disappointed. I had a freeze in Interlagos, in my opinion  freeze gives the lpg a little bit of technical problems that are still statistically out of date, so I'm not that sad. In the 60s the percentage of a driver's break in the championship was very high.
Congratulations to Mielle, I'm sure it was a difficult victory seeing your friend leave on the last lap. Congratulations to my great friend Doni, who deserves luck, I don't know in the GPL anyone who has more motivation and his light is contagious!
My race was mizeravel, enter with my BRM not knowing what it would be like to do more than 6 laps on the track, it showed me quickly that the tires were boiling and after the first third of the race I was very slow and I was falling from positions until the end of the line.
I would have liked to fight more with Greg but he was faster with his H16.
