Season 36 Historics Trophy – Round 3– Spa-Francorchamps
For the next round of the season 36 we go to Spa-Francorchamps. Designed in 1920 the original triangle-shaped course used public roads between the Belgian towns of Francorchamps, Malmedy, and Stavelot. The track was intended to have hosted its inaugural race in August 1921, however the first car race was held at the circuit in 1922. Spa was the fastest road circuit in Europe at the time, and it had a nasty reputation for being dangerous and very fast- it was a circuit known to be one for the brave, and most drivers were frightened of it. The old Spa circuit was unique in that speeds were consistently high with hardly any let-up at all for 3–4 minutes. This made it an extraordinarily difficult mental challenge (& ridiculously easy to crash)…

Please check the Season 36 pages for details regarding rules and the 66F1 pages in particular.
Drivers must complete 50% of the race to score points.

i'm deeply heartbroken, impossible to finish a race. After the incident at the start,my car was hovering over the hump.A touch of Grup brought back into play(thank you) but after the first lap the engine explode. So i'm considering a withdrawal from the 66.

oh well...

seemed to be settling in for a reasonable run at the back. sorry to see a few cars in the early pile up.

had a spin and lost myself a few seconds.. got back on track and tried to claw my way back a little, but sadly no luck.

My strategy was only to stay out of trouble and get some points..  sad but true,  but my game plan was scuppered by a screen freeze.

Spa is not kind to me.  not sure what Ive done to upset the belgians . LOL!

hope the race went well for the rest of you.  Doni was making good progress through the pack, this I know becuse ive always got a good view of the race from my usual position (i.e the rear) and I was hoping for a nice race with billy as I had managed to keep him in sight.  Alas, not to be yet again.

Screen freeze about the end of lap 4 I think.
I chose the cheap points BRM assuming I would crash at some point. I'm quite capable of doing that myself without a screen freeze.

Sorry for the touch Doni at T1, I left you as room as possible but  this time it didn't work. Sorry who was involved in Doni spin.  Sad

A tough but enjoyable race for me. I made a steady start but left a bit of a gap to the fast chaps. I tried very hard but I couldn't catch the draft and they eased away. I saw Doni was behind me on prib and so a put in qually pace to try to keep him behind. Despite my best efforts the gap gradually reduced until I made the first of 3 unforced errors. Once he was through it was a matter of trying to maintain concentration until the end. I was very lucky not to damage the car each time I went off! I've lost wheels many times with impacts much lighter than the ones tonight Roll Eyes

Very unlucky with your engine Fran. I suspect it was damaged in the shunt on lap 1, you took quite a hit.

Respect to Bastian for some very good sportsmanship, helping to dislodge your beached Ferrari.

@ Francesco …… As I understand these things in GPL. Sometimes, because of a little lag, your client PC decides that a car has hit something and is damaged, so it shows fire/wheels off/smoke etc but the server has not registered any contact and continues the race. After a few seconds the client PC is updated by the server and the race continues.
It was Francesco's PC that decided that Doni's car was damaged and so showed it minus wheels and on fire, but the server had not registered any damage to Doni ( Doni's PC would also show his car as OK ). Once the server and client PC's regain full synch everything returns to normal.
It is the SERVER that determines what has really happened in the race and the client PC's fill in the gaps when there is a momentary dip in the data exchange.

My race did not quite go to plan lol. I have never been concerned with getting pole position at tracks like Spa, Le Sarthe or Nurby as the laps are so long, with plenty of opportunity for incidents. Also the slipstream is so good that provided you are in the top 5 or 6 cars it should be easy to stay in touch...…..provided a driver does not make a dumb mistake!!! Which is exactly what I did on Lap 1 as I simply ran off the track into the fields and ruined my race.
Things did not get any better when a lap or two later I clipped the wall at Stavelot. After that impact the car was 20% down on power and could not accelerate in 5th gear. This meant that I was well down on top speed and my lap times were around 3:41 for lap after lap.  Unless cars ahead had problems I was never going to race anybody, so I concentrated on simply getting to the flag.

Grats to Uli, Ziu and Andreas on the podium and all finishers. A mention to teammate Doni for a great recovery drive after his early incident.
Also a mention for Ziu who has had multiple engine failures and problems, but kept the Honda going and took a good 2nd place. Worth mentioning because that Honda engine is not the most reliable amongst the 66 cars  Wink.

I saw the same "phenomenon" during the 1st race of this serie at le Mans night with Tristan's car  Shocked

Why it never happened to our cars ?  Grin

so it shows fire/wheels off/smoke etc but the server has not registered any contact and continues the race.

I've seen an Eagle lose all it's wheels while streaming fire and smoke only to "repair" itself a few seconds later. It's a bizarre occurrence. It's better than Steven King's Christine. Smiley

Three in a row and especially a 14 driver strong grid makes me happy.
It was not so easy to drive here because of the heavy fps lags!!?? At the beginning one to three times a lap the fps went down to 42 fps for only a fractional second but always at another part of the track and in Eau Rouge for example that is not what you really need. It was getting better the longer the race was going on.
I enjoyed the first 5 laps very much and it looked like it would get a nice race but unfortunately Tristan and Axel get in trouble and the concentration exercise starts.
GRATS ZiuBacubacu and Andreas and all finishers. Big thanks to our admins who made that race possible.

The reason that it never happens to your car, is because …..your car is shown on your PC with your graphics and your GPL inputs, then your relative position is sent to the server and on to all the other client PC's...….
and it is only when a competitors car is fractionally late in sending it's data to the server ( or the interweb delays it ) and then on to your PC, so your PC makes a "best guess" about where the other car was going and what it might have hit, until it gets an update from the server. So while you are waiting for the update your PC shows what it thinks has happened and what damage resulted. Which is why we sometimes see cars miraculously rise from the dead.  Shocked.....but we never see our car repair itself  Undecided

One of my more memorable races.  Typically, with the big V-12 Ferrari, it ends in a smoldering heap somewhere on the infield at Blanchimont so when I got into a scramble at T1 on Lap01, I could only think that history was running true to form and I was out before it had hardly begun.  My sincere and profound apologies to all involved as I clearly pulled across Fulvio's bow and made contact with his RF tyre.  Not in the least his fault.  From the T1 adventure, I recovered to catch Clive and Paul on Lap02 only to misjudge their speed down-track of Les Combes and be forced to throw the car into a spin to miss Clive.  Three complete revolutions before it came good and I could continue without hitting a thing.  I finished Lap02 in P12 some 38 seconds down on the leader.  LOL!

With a long, long way to go, I just put my chin down and carried on hoping against hope that I'd avoid any more drama.  As it turned out, the dramas were largely left for my colleagues as one by one, they suffered misadventures.  Before very long, I was chasing Phil for P5 which soon become P4 as Clive had a wild spin in Stavelot and we both passed.  Phil was only just in sight when he went for a wild spin in the switch-backs just before La Carriere.  I held my breath as I went by as there was every chance that he'd spin back across my bow and it would be all she wrote.  PHEW!  Made it!  Ran off the last laps just thanking my lucky stars for such a wild and crazy time.

Grats to Uli on the victory.  Great job by Bacubacu to score P2 and to my old sparring partner, Andreas, on snagging a most worthy and satisfying P3.  Well done, amigo.

Phil did persevere for P5.  Clive soldiered on in for P6 with a sick Honda and I must give a shout out to Dave for running half the race having to cock the steering wheel over 30° to the left to keep the BRM going straight.  The Iron Man trophy goes to you for that, DR.
