Season 36 1967F1 – Round 4 –  Oulton Park - Juniors

Season 36 is a joint series between GPL Brazil and UKGPL. This post is for the Junior division.
Round 3 takes place at Oulton Park in the UK. The track is set in the grounds of Oulton Hall, which were used as an army staging camp by General Patton prior to the Normandy landings. At this time the famous boxer Joe Louis gave exhibition bouts at Oulton Park in the vicinity of the Deer Leap section of the circuit. GPL members are kindly requested not to resort to this sort of behaviour.
The track is characterised by rapidly changing gradients, blind crests and several tight corners. The full circuit is 2.8 mi (4.5 km).

After a good qualyfication the race was a disaster. One exit at the first lap ,probably triggered by a strange trajectory of Phil, than another exit at the corner with a Brabham on the right. After the shiftR the steering wheel did not respond normally,i have tried a second shift R during the stop in the box but nothing to do.Finnaly the explosion......all perfect.

…...probably triggered by a strange trajectory of Phil......
That was me missing a gear. I did that 3 times on lap one, once again on lap 2 and yet again at Old Hall at the start of lap 3. The last one caused me to spin off and I had to wait for practically the whole field to pass me before I could re-join safely. After that I missed gears several more times before the Honda engine cried enough and exploded. Thankfully we have a reset on this division so after my shift-R and S&G, I started to chase down the pack.

I had a lot of fun trying to claw my way back up the field. Oulton is a hard place to pass and you have to be very careful. Nevertheless I managed it, but Ricardo and Dave Curtis were driving well and I had to try very hard to get past. Eventually I got back up the third which was a very good result given the circumstances.

I've had my H-Shifter for a number of years now and I wouldn't go back to paddles (not authentic enough for me) but I still find it hard to use. I'm OK in practice but it is in the races where I have trouble. There is more going on and consequently I don't focus quite so much on my gear changes. In the latter part of this race I did better because I tried to concentrate on the gear changes and tried to ignore the race (particularly Pribluda) and it seemed to work. Hopefully I'll stop missing gears soon!!

Wow, that was a pure cage match.

I qualified 6th, a full second above my pay grade and PB, realized instantly that I didn't belong in that kind of company, and DQ'd myself to start at the back of the field. Picking my way around the slower drivers, I eventually got back into the middle of the pack. That's when the World War III seemed to break out. Cars were all over everywhere, disconnecting regularly, and yellow flags seemed to appear virtually at every corner. With about ten laps to go I'd gone wide into the grass coming out of Esso bend but still had made it back onto the track and accelerating hard in 5th gear when I saw Dave Curtis stalled at the crest of Hill Top in the middle of the track. For some reason I was unable to steer my Honda even one millimeter to the left or right and ended up hitting him harder than a bag of hammers. We were launched 20' into the air. No sooner were we both back on the ground when another car smashed into poor Dave again. You can send your get well wishes to him at the Spire Methley Park Hospital near Leeds, where he'll be residing for the next six weeks and having breakfast, lunch, and dinner through a straw.

Anyway, I finished 5th somehow and won't have to rent a Honda any further this season. Win-win, right?   Smiley

<snip!>
...having breakfast, lunch, and dinner through a straw.

Seemed that way to me too;  I seemed to be locked in a cage with about 50 wild Hondas Smiley

I had a couple of bad laps around that time!  I 'd just reset after waiting for the track to clear;  but everyone involved could have done without me being placed right on that spot at that time;  so apologies for that.

Not quite my idea of a liquid lunch Smiley

I'm slow in everything;  but I do have a soft-spot for the Honda.
In this case though; maybe I can (slightly) trump you - I've done my BRM for the season  laugh

Was hard going out there though.
Thanks all!

Cheers.
Dave.

First race this season where I didn't spin off lap 1. When Cookie disappeared I was in 2nd place. Andreas was on my gear box for several laps & got past when I made a tiny error. I should have held on for 3rd but I made a mistake going past a back marker & got stuck in a ditch(my fault I got the brake point wrong)  Even after a S&G I was still 3rd but a spin on cold tyres let Phil through. Getting closer to the podium!

Axel was overdominating the qually and the race until his Eagle's engine exploded.
Can't understand why he didn't reset !!!??
Even with a reset, he should have easily win.

Looking at the replay, I saw that 8 drivers performed a shift-R, it proves it was a very tough race.

After Axel's problem, I took the lead with something like 10-11 seconds from Billy and Andreas.
But on lap 20, I made several mistakes when I saw Albert Hallu spinning or going out of the track and so the gap was reduced to 3 seconds with Andreas (Billy had troubles and was far from the lead).
The last laps were very stressing and Andreas reduced the gap to 0,55sec !

First win since a long time, I'm happy with it but I know Axel was running in another category.

I realy love this track, and in the GeLi I am in the Eagle team...
Seems I overreved the engine at some places, so a camshaft broke.
@David
For me the race was over and you deserve the win, as you managed to bring the Ferrari healthy over the line!

Grats David, you are building up a good tally of points. It will be interesting to see how the championship pans out with the new points system. It is close at the top.

I am curious to see the consequences of the new rule for bonus 50 pts.
For example, has Billy already lost this 50 pts ? even if he still can use the 7 different chassis.

I was never expecting to win the championship & as I don't get on with the Honda or the BRM I am just going to take the cars I have the most fun with. I have deliberately not taken the Lotus or the Eagle, although I might give one of them a run at Spa.
