Auto-downloading skins don't work but if you see the correct skin if you have it locally.

The difference between nK and GTR is that you don't need to have them on the server.

I think that's right....

The templates must be out there somewhere?

Yep, that's it : neither the server nor the clients care whether the skins are installed.
If it has them it will use them, and if not it just uses the default - red for the FR and black for the FTarget. The car number is independant of the skin so it causes no issues for result exports etc.

Another good thing I've noticed is that there is no join lag when a driver joins and the default skin is used.
I wonder if GTR2 has anything like this to avoid the invisible cars bug when people join during the session. I'm assuming that GTR does this to avoid join lag?

Correct. Although the join lag in GTL is a lot less than GTR it's not completely gone.

So these skins, do they apply to ALL cars in the race of the same type or are they specific to a particular car number (which can be unique?)?

rFactor does this, it calls them "temp" cars.

Only to that specific number, if I understand your question right.

Each car has its own directory in the cars/f2000/skins location.
The directory has the skin itself (.tga), the menu icon (.bmp) and the cockpit file (cant remember the extension of this because I never edit it).
So if you copy an existing directory and change the name to eg shark#124 then this makes a car number 124. Simply replace the .tga file with your own skin and that's it.
Very easy compared to gtr, there's no need to unpack and edit anything.

That skin will only be for that car number so even if there are 15 F2000s racing only one (although there can be more if more peeps choose the same skin) will be in your colours.
The car number is just a graphical thing afaik - the actual racing number is part of the player profile, as is the helmet.

Hope this answers?

I think there is a slight chance of a joining stutter still, or at least RACER specifically tells you to stay till end for this reason. But thier place is full of stupid rules for the sake of it.

Read the full story now http://www.gpchampionship.com/gpcos/media-article.php?id=39 .

Or be satisfied to know that we both made race through pre qualifying, no mean feat to get top 15 against 43 mean NKer's, and got a fine  2nd (Mo of course) and 5th in race 1. Race 2 was not so good and not worth mentioning   Tongue.

It would be nice to see some other UKGTR teams represented there as well  Smiley.

So is Netkar worth getting yet?  Wouldnt mind some good single seater action, especially at tracks like Monaco.

Depends who you ask.  Wink

In it's current state I would not bother. If I'd known that a 12 month subscription meant "take your money and run" then I wouldn't have bothered as it's not finished and I personally haven't played it since the first few weeks of release.

I know some others that have had far more enjoyment with it though.  Tongue Wink

Netkar has been worth getting all along imo  Tongue . There are some 'minor' bugs which can pi** off even the most patient driver, but the driving experiance is second to none with great tyre feel and FF.
I've had some great online races with it, but I have had two non starts due to bugs, and been a victim of lag a couple of times - but thats after nearly 5000 km online!

We're still awaiting a patch - testing is happening this month - so it cant be too far away................ so if you want to instal it and just drive then I'd wait for the patch.
If you dont mind having to tweak a few things then go for it now Smiley

See RSC to see points, both valid, made by Mo and Shark argued infinitum. Only one way to make up your mind  Smiley. You will not be dissapointed by Monaco its just so tough and rewarding, and I would guess realistic.

As Mo said, patch and new tracks are on the way. And many features, like the amazing "Live timing" feature used during PQ, certainly separate NK from the crowd.

Of course, I would recommend it  Smiley. Its bloody good fun.
