Season 36 - Handicap Race – Monza

The moderating team have been hard at work trying to dream up new events to keep you all occupied during the lock-down, and so here is another one!

We are going to have a handicap race based of each driver’s fastest race lap as a benchmark. If you are interested in participating, all you have to do is post your fastest UKGPL race lap at Monza here along with the car you used. If you haven’t raced with UKGPL in the 67F1s at Monza, don’t worry, just post your PB and we can use that as your benchmark. You will be able to pick any car you want for the race, you do not have to use the same car you used to set your benchmark. At the end of the race the handicap time you have been allocated will be added to your race time. The driver with the shortest net race time will be declared the winner.

Sounds complicated? Well it is a bit of a challenge for the organisers, but it couldn’t be easier for the drivers. You just post your benchmark fastest lap and then turn up and race. The organisers will do the rest.

For this concept to work we will need some representative lap times from a circuit we all know well and there is non better than the Cathedral of Speed.

The explain how the handicaps will work consider Phil Thornton and Billy Nobrakes.  In the Season 32 privateers race at Monza, Phil’s fastest lap in the Eagle was 1m29.425s and Billy’s in the Brabham was 1m31.338s. If Billy takes the slowest car (the Cooper) in the handicap race, the time to add on to add on to his finishing time will be zero. If Phil takes the Honda in the handicap race his handicap will be 57s. So Phil would have to beat Billy by more than 57s to win the race. However if Phil took the Cooper instead, his handicap would only be 23s. In this case Phil would only have to beat Billy by more than 23s to win the race. Now if we consider a driver from the Season 32 Works race, say Andreas who finished second. He took the Lotus and posted a fastest lap of 1m28.818s. If he took the Lotus again in the handicap race, the time to add on to his finishing time would be 2 minutes whereas if he took the Cooper it would only be 40s.

This is a Fun Race so unlimited free Shift-Rs are allowed. There is no need to carry out a Stop and Go in the pit lane if you make a Shift-R.

The most recent 67 race I can find was Season 33 with a 1.30.15 in the Eagle.
I will probably take the Brabham.

Depends how far you want to go back Smiley

Looks as though I've been slower since 2014...
Should probably stick with the Eagle.

Best with the eagle 1,2954 but is the best not the usual. Cheesy in the last race was 1,3055(2017).

The race is really against your own PB but adjusted for the chassis. Consistency & avoiding accidents will be the key. The Cooper is the slowest at Monza but might be a good bet for this event. I might take the Ferrari as I cant remember having used it in a race at Monza

The best time I could find for my on line racing attempts at Monza was a 1:28.7 in the Eagle!!!  But that was way back in 2007 when I was racing in the old Div 2 or Clubmans.

Since that time I have got progressively slower and now usually run in the low 1:30's. wheelchair wheelchair

Back in those days I could scorch a set of rear tyres inside the first lap lol, Now I am older and much more controlled, so the rubber lasts for at least 3 laps  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
I might do a few practice laps in the Eagle and see if the old pace is still there. If not I might try and tame the BRM which I think I have achieved a 1:30'03 as a best ?

As a note to ALL members and drivers. This race is a fun experiment and in theory everyone should end up with the same race time after the time handicaps are applied. We all know that it will not work out that way, because people will make mistakes or maybe improve on their PB's? But it will be very interesting to see where we all finish?
If the maths works out generally as predicted, it might help us develop some handicaps for use in other races that will give slower drivers a genuine chance of a podium, or a win over the usual candidates. As Bill said, the secret here will be running a consistent race as close to your best lap times as possible and that applies to every driver regardless of their ability or ranking.

I've found a time for Francesco from Season 32 which is a bit slower than his PB so I've used that. I can't go back to 2007 because the individual fastest laps were not recorded in SRou back then. Despite Evil's sandbagging about getting progressively slower devil I've found a time for him from S31 which is from about the same date as the others so I think that looks fair.

I've put everyone in a Cooper just to see how the calculation pans out and it looks reasonable to me. Although I think Francesco is quicker than the handicap is showing, he has got noticeably quicker in the last couple of seasons (which actually correlates with the calculation).

Hopefully we will get a few more drivers joining in and we will get a good range of handicaps to test the concept.

I agree with Billy, this system should reward consistency. The driver who can circulate at or near their PB should do well. It should favour drivers like David Rainier who very rarely makes mistakes, whereas I'm always making stupid unforced errors  taz.

I think my 1:30.446 from s31 is more likely - if I'm lucky/if it all comes together for 1 lap Smiley

Thanks to Sebastian and Tris for submitting your times.  I've added the car choices for me, Billy and Dave and published the provisional handicaps in the race announcement. It looks quite interesting, Tris will have a lot of work to do but he normally laps me so the handicap is probably about right.
