Moderator's Report

No reported incidents.
However there was a serious collision on Lap 1 between Tristan and Ziu who were in close contention for the lead.
Because it was a lap 1 incident, it has been reviewed.
Both cars involved were side by side approaching the turn and equally determined not to yield the lead. Tristan provokes a rally style slide into the corner from quite a long way out and Ziu maintains a more normal line on the inside.
It is fair to say that both drivers were at the limit of car control on cold tyres with full tanks and both cars were snaking under braking. Upon close inspection of the replay there is no actual contact and it has been decided that warp played a major part in sending Tristan over the top of the banking.
Racing Incident. refer both drivers to this advice https://www.ukgpl.com/rec_dvr_beh/rec_driver_beh.htm

Server replay time: 0

Once again pitstops were required by the Pro drivers and the race post clearly states that they cannot be taken on Lap 1 or Lap 25.
Tristan made his 3rd and final stop at the end of the last lap. The rules were in place to prevent drivers gaining an advantage by doing this. A car taking a pitstop mid race will suffer a "slow down" penalty on the in lap, and also a "speed up" penalty on his out lap. By taking a stop at the chequered flag the driver avoids losing the "speed up" time.
Therefore rather than a DQ, the driver is penalised with 3x the gain. A 15 second penalty is applied.

The Eighth Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy - Rounds 3 and 4

For the third round of the series we will fly to the moon. An interesting track but lacking a bit of atmosphere. We'd need a decent turbo charger to get some air into those thirsty cylinders around here. No Eagle to land in the 65s so we'll just have to keep orbiting for 25 laps.

Back down to earth for the fourth round with a splash down off the coast of Argentina. After drying off we make our way inland to San Miguel de Tucumán. The circuit is in a public park in the centre of the city, it has fallen into disrepair but it is still possible to drive around the circuit but not at racing speeds. It is a public road and has been decorated with numerous sleeping policemen. The grandstands are still there but they are not offering refreshments. Pity is is a great little track for the 65F1 cars.

There are chassis restrictions for the fastest drivers. For details see the championship page.

PRO DRIVERS SHOULD CHECK THE NUMBER OF PITSTOPS THAT THEY MUST TAKE DURING THE RACE

This is a memorial race, so unlimited free Shift-Rs are allowed. There is no need to carry out a Stop and Go in the pit lane if you make a Shift-R.

As you all begin ( or even continue ) your preparations for the JSMT series, you will notice that the PRO drivers have been given a handicap that varies depending on which car they select for each race. AM drivers need not concern themselves with the pitstops, other than to know that the alien who vanished into the distance when the flag dropped, might re appear at various times throughout the race.  Wink

The table showing the cars and tracks and the respective number of stops is  (   https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=951&theme=6   )

1) A PRO driver can take his allocated pitstops at any time, except on lap 1 and on the last lap of each race.
2) The stops may be taken on following laps, or spread out. It is the driver's choice.
3) There is no speed limit in the pits, but you must still drive with regard for other drivers and reported incidents will be moderated.
4) Each stop is a StopnGO...i.e. your car must come to a full stop for at least 0.1 secs before you move off again.
5) There is no overtaking in the pitlane, so if a car has entered the pits ahead of you, you must stop behind that car and then follow it out of the pitlane. Because all cars are doing the same SnG's there is no reason to expect the car ahead to take a longer stop than you do. If the car ahead stops first, he will move away first too.
Please DO NOT enter the pits in order to retire from the race. If you need to quit, drive off the track somewhere safe and hit ESC.
5) If the pitlane is empty when you arrive, drive to the far end before stopping, DO NOT stop at your pitbox. If there is a car already in the pits, make your stop just behind him....he will probably be moving off before you have come to a full stop.
6) Drivers leaving the pits are responsible for rejoining the race safely, do not blast out of the pits without being sure there is a gap in the traffic!! It would still be wise for drivers passing the pits at full speed to be aware that cars might be joining the track and leave a little tarmac free. Neither car will gain much if they are involved in a crash at speed  Wink
7) In the heat of battle it might be difficult to remember how many stops you have completed? Maybe a pencil and paper might be difficult to work with when racing, but a 4 ( or however many stops you need ) coins or counters alongside you wheel, so that one can be pushed aside as each stop is completed? The number of stops WILL be checked by a moderator and failure to properly complete the required number of pitstops will result in a DQ...you have been warned  Grin

The intention is to keep the whole field engaged in the battle for the podium places throughout the race. It is quite possible that a few PRO drivers could find themselves in a last lap battle with AM drivers who do not wish to give up their position easily, so please drive with consideration.

PLEASE

Stay on the server after the first race until the Tucuman track is fully loaded

We need to find what happened last time with double car numbers  oops

When the track is fully loaded you can leave the server and rejoin!

If something is wrong the server will be restarted in a short time.

Screen freeze In both races in the last few laps, which is a bit of a shame as I was driving clean consistent laps in both races. I am wondering if it is something connected to the dodgy graphics on the menu pages of GPL. Hopefully not as I don't have a solution for fixing that.
Interesting pit stop experiment, which seemed to play out a little differently in both races. I think the penalty might have been to hard on the Pros at Tucuman. Without the screen freeze I would probably have finished in 2nd place. Ziu's Honda was a bit to quick & I expect he took the win - I've not seen the result as I am typing.

Was that on the moon Paul? Me too.

I also had to drive with bathroom scales for a steering wheel - this did not affect me in practice races (not on the GPL server though, Baab and I did some testing of his network last night). Made it difficult to concentrate and I think I rammed Phil in T2 when I lost my place on the track - sorry.

Tuc was better although I saw people stopping nearer the start than the end of the pit lane, so I make no apologies for whizzing past you!!

Race 3 was a bit of a disaster. Didn't have time to learn the moon before the race and when I joined I spent most of qually trying to work out why I was steering with bathroom scales. Then spent the first half of the race learning to drive without rev counter, second half put in some much better laps but the opposition was long gone.

Second race swapped cars to Lotus. Much better, I could see the rev counter! Made 3 or 4 mistakes otherwise I might have made the podium. I was fighting with Evil when and I spun out and lost several places. Sad to see Billy disco, you were holding on to a well deserved 2nd place there Bill. A good 25 seconds in front of me when I was in third with 2 laps to go!

Yes, was also affected by the group freeze/disco at the Moon after 20 laps and about to complete 21.

No such issues for me at Tucuman, although was lucky to have made that event
(after recovering from the freeze, thought I'd go for a reboot & then had some blue-screening...)

Anyway, thanks all.
Looked tough going with the stops out there;  but made it interesting.

You may need to check it's still valid/test;  but this is the fix for the square steering wheel fix for the Brabham:
http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=5917

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Arf,

yep, On the Moon.     was an awful race for me. so far off the pace. and people taking their pitstops etc with no problems.
didnt even give me a chance to move onwards.  just too slow there unfortunately.

Tuc was much better, Like billy I was doing ok. Obviously not quite as well as Billy he was at the front, I was at the back !!.But I made it to the end and even put in a respectable qually lap.  race itself was good.

Tuc has a nice flow and I actually enjoyed a few decent laps without feeling as though i was holding anyone up or getting in the way..  Had a blast !!

Paul.

Quite disappointed that we had more freezes on tracks that we thought were safe. Commiserations to all those who missed out ( myself included at the Moon)
Grats to the podiums in both races. All results will be subject to moderation and checking of pitstops etc, So final results are provisional at the moment.

I made a complete Horlicks of my early laps on The Moon and went hunting for rock samples at one point, almost getting totally lost in the process and ended up almost a whole lap behind. I got my pitstops out of the way in the first few laps and was slowly crawling my way back up through the field, but I was never going to get to the podium places. When my freeze happened I was hoping for a reasonable result...but  Undecided

Tucuman was a fun race and just for the experiment I took a 4 stop car instead of the 3 stop Cooper. Once again I got my stops out of the way in the first 5 laps and after a small "off" I was plumb last. But the strategy worked out quite well as I slowly picked up places through the race until I came upon Phil in his Lotus. He was determined to hold onto his 3rd place and this circuit does not offer many easy passing places. It took me several laps to work out that I had to wind up for the attempt about 3 corners before making the move, Then Phil fought me around 3 more corners rather than yield the place  Shocked, before running a fraction wide and going off. By the time I had secured the place it had taken me almost a whole lap!!  I genuinely felt sorry that I had to take his place...but not for too long  Wink
Commiserations to Bill who looked certain for a 2nd place on the podium after a solid race...yet .another freeze  Undecided

I need to look at how those pitstops played out in these races as they all seemed to be taken ( but I will check  nono ) without a problem.
Colin's comment about cars stopping halfway down the pitlane might have included me, but in my defence...when I arrived there was already a car 75% down the pitlane and one leaving just ahead of that, so I stopped at 50% to avoid being too close. Of course the other cars were moving off as I stopped and Colin swept past to the vacated area, which was the right thing to do  Wink.
I have not heard that anyone had problems with the pitstops except for Bastian who had misunderstood that it was Stop n Go and not Shift-R. I did see a message from Fulvio about not being able to make the pitstops work? I hope that you were not trying to use the GPL Pitstop Patch??

Strangely enough, Tucuman was a track where I did not think that the handicap would work out too well, but it appears that it was pretty good.
Ziu got away at the front and was able to run consistent fast laps to build a good lead. The other Pro drivers were all pegged back by the stops and were battling with the Am drivers...which was the whole plan.

Maybe this is a format that we can use again to "even up" the racing and give the Ams a taste of champagne occasionally?

re the double header problem

After the end of race1 I looked into the drivers list behind the (left) main menu where the numbers are shown.

- I could see that the driver took their # of race 1 into race2 - but after the track was fully loaded the numbers got fresh assigned and changed.
Re joining drivers got fresh numbers, so I thought all is fine...
BUT
After the race 2 I looked into the GPLRA txt and found 2x doublettes!

So for future Double Events it is a no go to stay on the server...

Luckily for this race there was no related mass disco!

Thanks for looking into the problem Axel. That information will help us avoid problems in the future,

Do you have the small download for increasing the font size in the replay window?    " replay_font_sizing.rar " with my new monitor the font is simply microscopic and unreadable.

I found the article on SRMZ and the link to the download. But SRMZ refuses to accept my name and password, also attempts to get an email to reset my credentials have failed  Undecided

I have not heard that anyone had problems with the pitstops except for Bastian who had misunderstood that it was Stop n Go and not Shift-R. I did see a message from Fulvio about not being able to make the pitstops work? I hope that you were not trying to use the GPL Pitstop Patch??

I mean that for me 4 pit stops were too much. I haven't raced 65 for many years till now and in these last races I wasn't able to keep up the pace with the Pro drivers, but even AM  Shocked
Ay Goodwood I had an almost clean race but ended back, at Jops did a lot of error and 5 pit stop ending last  Grin, at Surfer I was disco while I was last after have taken all 4 pitstops, at Moon couldn't join in time and at Tucuman after my spin at first lap was dead last after taken all 4 pitstops in a row in the first laps and almost was lapped by Ziu even if I did only one more spin in the Whole race.  Huh
Maybe I have to practice more 65?  Grin
Thx for organizing! Smiley

@ Clive

get it here: https://www.sendspace.com/file/6mk6lg

For SRMZ please give me your "name" there and e-mail via PM, so I can give Ginetto a message for a new PW
