Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT
1024MB DDR SDRAM
Sapphire X1600PRO 256MB 8x AGP
Running GTR2 as DirectX8

Those specs are better than my old machine, something doesn't smell right here.....
Scan your PC with AdAware and Spybot S&D - google and install them - they are good for checking adware and spyware infections. Or use Window's defender, they all do the same thing.

If it's clean, always disable Norten completely. Ctrl-alt-del and turn off any processes for norten or systemac i think it is. It's a big resource hog and runs in the background (which is why I love McAfee sooo much). Grin
When u start GTR2, ctrl-alt-del and right click the gtr2 process, set this to high priority.

U shud be fine to run GTR2 on DX9. DX8 is very old now and your X1600 should easily cope with it.

I'm not an expert on this.....but if that doesn't work I'm stumped. Re-format?

I ran a scan with norton, so I know that the only adware on the PC is BF2142  Wink

Disabling norton doesn't help, (it's running the only firewall), but I'll try setting GTR2 to high priority.

Another thing to try is to turn down the force feedback. Just as a test, try turning it right off and see if it affects the frame rate. I found that running with med FF improved the frame rate by quite a bit.

That could be it, the game always slows down when I'm in the gravel or on the rumble strip, or when I'm spinning. All of which use FF. I'll give that a try.

An extra 5-15 FPS by turning FF off. Good enough to actually race!
I'll set it to Medium next time I race.

when was the last time you did disk defragmentation and why aren't you doing it on a weekly basis?

as per swap (page) file goes: set it to 150% of your RAM size, both minimal and maximum value (i.e. custom size, not system controlled).

btw, it's a VERY good idea not to have page file on your system partition (c: )

I did a defrag a few weeks ago, XP says it doesn't need defrag-ing.

The page file is on the main drive because I've only got one hard drive.

I recently tried this small program out: http://majorgeeks.com/Game_Booster_d6148.html

It works fine, turns off everything you don't need for the actual game with a single click.

Free and no spyware - I like it  Grin

Does it work with Win7? I used to shut down some processes on XP but I'm not that familiar with Win 7. Smiley
