Season 37 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 4 –  Tripoli

The Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2) & the newly released 1968 mod. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group & keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Group 8 or Group 9.

Round 4 will use the Formula 2 cars from 1967. We visit the very fast circuit at Mellaha Lake,Tripoli. The track was a 13.140 kilometer (8.165 mi) long affair situated in a salt basin between Tripoli, Suq al Jum'ah and Tajura and around the Mellaha Air Base. The track's most distinctive landmark was a brilliant white concrete tower situated across from a large frontstretch grandstand that could hold up to ten thousand people. Mellaha Lake was equipped with starting lights, an innovation, and the additional amenities rivaled the best that continental European circuits had to offer. Back in the late thirties this was the fastest track of the world

We take the 50 min as goal, if you take a lap of 3:10 it's 15.8laps - 3:15 is 15.4 laps

Wow! I'm new to online racing and this was only my 2nd experience of it. I only managed a couple of clean laps before getting caught up in the carnage of T1 on L3. I didn't Shift-R, partly as I couldnt remember the rules and secondly as the track was not clear behind me. I hope that I didn't cause anyone else to crash out.  Sad

I really, really enjoyed this though and I hope to be back in a couple of weeks. Hopefully to complete the race next time.

Awesome fun - I loved it. No more AI for me Smiley

Sorry Billy but you brake too early compared to me, despite we have the same pedals. I hope you continued your race.

Not to worry Fran. I need more practice with these pedals. I got to the finish. Shame about the incident as we could have had some fun with the draft.

Phil - very sorry for the contact on lap 1. I had the draft to make a pass but then realised I'd run out of road as we were approaching the kink. I think you would have been knocking on the door of a podium if you hadn't lost time.

Phil - very sorry for the contact on lap 1.
No problem Billy. I must admit I was spitting feathers at the time, particularly since I'd also been punted off at T4 (the first tight right hander). However I calmed down and just worked hard to make up the rather large gap. In the end it was a great race, plenty of slipstreaming and I had a good battle with Andreas and Ziu in their Ferraris. It was a bit of a chess match whilst Ziu tried to work out the best opportunity to pass. He made a mighty effort on the last lap but the little 166 just didn't have enough prancing horses to trouble the mighty Matra  Grin

Hope you are getting used to the new pedals. You will get quicker once you get the feel of the load cell.

If the new pedals improve your pace just like Phil's has lately Bill, we will be seeing you in the PRO ranks soon!!!

I was late arriving on the server as I found that I no longer had Tripoli loaded on my PC. Quickly I d/loaded via the Track Database, but 4 times I installed and 4 times the track refused to load??!!! Eventually, I deleted all reference to Mellaha that I could find and tried yet again. If it did not work on that last attempt I was going to watch TV!
Fortunately things clicked into place and I arrived in the pits with about 20mins of qually left.
Experience has taught me that Mehalla is all about slipstream and surviving incidents on the first lap. The Protos would have been the obvious choice for this track, but with so little time and no setup I went for the Lola BMW that I used at Goodwood, simply cranked up the gear ratios.
First lap of qually I clocked a rather slow 3:11, but then I got lucky as Axel swept past in his Protos and I attached my tow rope  Wink Thanks Axel, you dragged me to a 3:09 and 3rd on the grid. That placed me right behind Uli and Axel in the leading Protos and in the perfect place for a tow.

Lap 1 was a little scary as Allessandro, Axel and Uli diced for position ahead and Alain threatened from behind in his Lola. The high speeds on this circuit inevitably cause spectacular accidents, so I wanted to leave some space and yet leave room to avoid any wreckage. There was no chance of escaping into the lead and pulling away in the slightly underpowered Lola BMW and I think Alain realised that too as he sat behind me waiting...
Then Allessandro and Axel touched on the fast right hander and I was doubly lucky. I just managed to avoid the two spinning cars and run across the sand at high speed without losing control, plus I emerged still within range of Uli's slipstream...... and Alain followed me through Wink

This left Uli, myself and Alain clear of the chasing pack. Both Alain and myself could happily follow Uli's tow truck in the draft, but although it was possible to pass Uli, there was no way that the Lola's could escape from the Protos. So, this race would be decided in the final 100mtrs, if I could time my attack from the slipstream. Then Alain vanished from my mirrors out in desert section, I hope that it was nothing that I did Alain?

2 cars left to run the last 10 laps and I had to wait until the end of the final lap before the race would begin lol!
As things turned out, I dropped back just 10 mtrs too far before I launched my attack and crossed the line 0.07secs behind Uli.

Grats to Uli on holding a steady lead and making no mistakes for the whole race, plus of course all finishers.  Wink

Disappointing result for me !

This track is a lot fun when you are following other cars and could use the slipstream, but when you are alone on the track, it becomes very boring.

My best lap was 3.09.318, only Axel did a better time.
I could do that because I was following ...Axel during 1,5 lap.
But when I was alone I couldn't be quicker than 3.15.6 !

My start was very good and I was 4th after 3 turns, following the two Protos (Uli/Axel) and Clive's Lola. Unfortunately I was surprised by Clive slowing more than I was thinking on turn 4.
I tried to go on the outside to not rearend him but one wheel went in the sand and my car became a spinning top.
A big sorry to Dave C. and Gareth Hall who were victims of my carelessness .

I could continue and was joining Axel who had some troubles, so I could stay in his slipstream  until the begin of lap 4 (or 3?) when there was a huge accident on the straight after the pits.
Don't know exactly what happened !

Then I made a shift-R, was following Phil and other drivers during this lap and lap 5 until I had to stop and go.   The ten last laps were alone and boring !

Apologies to Davide if he had to avoid my car, but I had a similar problem with the cars ahead as they changed their pace and their lines.

Watching the cars ahead on lap 1, I did think it was a little early in the race to be fighting so hard, on a track like Tripoli where there is zero chance of driving away even if you are in faster car. David discovered how much time he could gain when he was following Axel for a few laps.

When I was following Uli later in the race I was almost cruising, Although the Protos is much faster, I could allow Uli to get 100mtrs ahead and once I got the Lola BRM wound up in the high 5th gear, the slipstream just dragged me up to his gearbox. Then I had to back off and drop the revs from 10k down to 9.5k just to sit there. Provided that I made no mistakes and did not blow the engine, Uli was not going to escape.  Wink

Another race finished on the first lap for me, good start but important was only not to loss gap from lead group, but when Axel crashed and stopped into the wall in that fast curve was impossible for me to avoid it

Apologies to Davide if he had to avoid my car,

No reason to apologize, Clive, it was 100% my fault.
During the qually, I was very slow on the turn and was braking very early compared to other drivers... so I tried to be faster on these places to keep the contact and the slipstream with leaders.
