Season 37 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 5 –  Watkins Glen

The Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2) & the newly released 1968 mod. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group & keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Group 8 or Group 9.

Round 5 will use the new 1968 Formula 1 cars (Early car set). The Mod may be new but the venue is familiar, Watkins Glen the home of the US Grand Prix during the mid to late 60’s.

If you don’t have this mod, go to this site http://68f1.gplworld.de/downloads.htm
Save Download 1 & Download 3 - you will need them both. Follow the installation instructions & select the 68 car sets in GEM.

The Honda drives like a lawnmower with jet engine, I have never driven such a terrible unpredictable thing before...
When the tires get a little grip, the braking behavior changes completely.

I didn't bother doing any practice, its an Eagle at the Glen - Iv'e done thousands of laps and I have a very nice old setup.
I don't know which brand of thinners I was sniffing when I made that setup but it was terrible...!
I only did one qually lap with 20 gals and resigned to be last, Cookie pushed me but I managed it. he he he.
Grats to Tris et al, impressive times at the top and grats to all finishers.
Thanks for organising... I'm off to Jewsons...

PS, Im sorry Dave for the bad rejoin, I assumed I was last. Kiss

..... I have never driven such a terrible unpredictable thing before...
You obviously haven't tried any of my setups  eek

I still have trouble with the braking with this mod so I was trying to be careful.  But I got caught out at the Big Bend after about 5 laps (when the tyres were getting warmer???) and I got a snap oversteer and I skidded off. Thankfully I could continue and I had a grandstand view of David and Doni disappearing into the distance. The race settled down and after a while Doni appeared in my mirrors. I was looking forward to a bit of a battle when I noticed my shifter was coming loose. I reached down to tighten it up and promptly drove off the track  Hit with a wet fish After a shift-R and S&G I was miles behind so I just tried to bring the car home in one piece to hopefully score some points.

Grats to Tris on the win with some scorching fast laps and to Yannick for keeping him honest. A useful podium for Uli which maintains his position at the top of the championship table. Grats to Dave on the Privateers win, the championship table looks interesting.

Watkins is always a beautiful track
Some misunderstanding in my race, sorry bennet68 (this is nick but I don't know who is  angel ) for the hit but I saw you went wide and I thought you saw me..
Other problem was with Girard, you have slowed down suddenly in the straight so was impossible for me to avoid you

68 mod is good but I hate wings and I buyed GPL for that reason Grin Tried with no wings but the McLaren was difficult to drive, with wings 11-9 it was much better and better lap time also

@Mod

After a mistake I have used the reset and relative stop&go, just now I read that was no possible for pro, so please exclude me from this race, sorry

Congratulations Tristan on your perfect hattrick, grats Yannick,
I made a new pB but had no chance against the Ferrari superiority - to much, to fast Wink
I‘m very happy with my lucky third. Consistency could be much better if Yannick didn‘t hit  Roll Eyes my back at the 90th.
THX to the backmarkers, almost all of you made a very good job, even in practice - thank you very much!
Nice that there was a full grid and a classic track again. Thanks Admins!

During the race, I made a big mistake on lap 1 at the loop and I restarted on last position ...

Then it was better and I overtook several cars until I rejoined Doni's car.
My Brabham was better on braking points but Doni's BRM was faster on straights.
I made several tries to overtake Doni but each time I have to brake hard or to go on the grass to avoid the contact. Unfortunately it happened on last turn before start line...
Sorry Doni but I had nowhere to go.

I am surprised to see how the Ferrari were so fast on this track.

Alessandro, so sorry for taking you out like that. I was so busy watching Alain's blue Eagle swooping down on me in my left hand mirror, I completely missed you in my right one. You made me jump so much I almost pulled the steering wheel off the desk. Please accept my apologies.

This is so much fun! As a newbie to online racing I'm mightily impressed by the speed of you guys - awesome. I'll certainly be watching your laps in the replay to see where I'm going wrong.

I'm also discovering the fine art of being a back-marker. Apologies once again to Alessandro. I'll have to put this down as part of my training. Lesson learned.

Thanks to Alain for a few laps of dicing with each other.
