Season 37 F1 SPRINT – Round 6 –  WIESBADEN  

The sixth race in the 1967 F1 SPRINT series takes us to Wiesbaden in Germany.  
The Wiesbadener Automobiel-Turnier was an event first organised in the early 1920s. Apart from the Hohe Wurzel hillclimb and a gymkhana, it also included races for sports- and racing cars titled Rund um den Neroberg from 1924-1929 and in 1931. Motorcycles were also catered for at least once, in 1927. The races were originally held on an eight-shaped 12.5 km circuit north of the city, which comprised 86 curves through undulating terrain. Large parts of this course seem to have vanished since. The sole documented fastest lap is Hans Stuck's 9.22,0 = 80.1 km/h (1928). In 1931, the race took place once more, now on a shortened, or possibly completely new, 4.6 km circuit. Bugatti-driver HeinrichJoachim von Morgen clocked the fastest lap in 2.41,4 = 102.6 km/h. The new course was used just once, because after 1931 the Neroberg races were dropped in favour of grass track races at the airfield of Erbenheim, just south-east of Wiesbaden. That same airfield was later paved and hosted a one-off auto race in 1958. The next races in Wiesbaden took place in May 1935 and 1936 as part of the Wiesbadener Motorsportkämpfe, which was more or less the successor of the Automobiel-Turnier mentioned above. The event included a long-distance regularity run, but also a speed event (Hochleistungsprüfung) on a 7.48 km street circuit in Wiesbaden, for touring cars, sports cars and motorcycles, although it should be noted there is a possibility these actually used some sort of time trial-like format.

I was seeiing duplicate/mirrored white lines on track, which was rather distracting.
However, installing a really early nvidia driver (& re-applying the same nvidia inspector profile) seems to have corrected that.
- just mentioning in case anyone else finds similar?

I was a little surprised to see a relatively peaceful, open track like Goodwood replaced with this city venue consisting of eight, blind 90^o corners, most of which I'll be taking in first gear. Let's hope the inevitable pile ups occur in one of the wider streets, because if we get clogged up in that constricted section between turns 7-10, none of us may get out alive.

Pity Goodwood has issues. It is lovely.

Well - got out of first a couple of times but the engine let go on Lap 3 - did about 30 practice laps not a problem. I was a moving chicane anyway so decided not to bother with the Shift-R. Might actually practice before Sunday for the next one.

What a dreadful track.
Been happier to take my chances of a disco at glorious Goodwood rather than this tip pot place.
Was hitting 1.42's in practice but nothing near that tonight.
Apologies to anyone I made contact with. I simply wasn't able to drive the track.
Quit after a coming together with Fran.

First time hit this track tonite was quite ok.

Sorry Bob for not seeing you in lap 2.That looked bad, at least no one had to retire there.

Good start gaining the 8th place but at lap 3 smoke from the engine, at lap 23 header and stopped race.
The only luck was the touch with Billy,for me was without consequence.

This is a new track for me and, as city tracks go, I actually prefer it to places like Monaco, Pau, and Turin. Still, it is unforgiving, as I quickly discovered in practice. The intermediate damage model setting seemed to me to be producing pro level damage results in the Cooper's handling. I concluded that the only way to get through this place was to do so as carefully as possible and let others subject themselves to the inevitable laws of attrition.

I qualified with a PB 1:42.00 in fourth behind three guys who were clearly faster than I was and just ahead of Doni and Bastian who were not long to be denied. I know my place in the UKGPL food chain, and although I am classified as a "works" driver, I am not one of that class who works but the one who gets worked. I understand that and accept my fate without my customary pissing and moaning. For me the only question as I sat on the starting grid was how long I would be able to hold Doni and Bastian back, a question that was answered within the first 100 yards. With my sloppy start, I found myself in 6th place before the field reached the first turn.

Still, that was essentially the end of my angst. I avoided early idiocy, wasn't nearby when the death angel came calling, and stayed away from trouble in the trouble spots. Soon the field lengthened out and by the end I was about 16 seconds behind Bastian and 16 seconds ahead of Phil. It had been a rather lonely drive, but in the midst of a cold city, even loneliness occasionally is something to be cherished.

I do want to send a shout out to the back markers, all of whom were outstanding in giving way to my approach. There was one instance where one driver,. having been passed by me, thought it would be fun to race me to T1. I'm not going to review that incident on the replay because I want to leave this pretty city thinking kindly of my time here.

Unlike most I enjoyed this track which I thought was more like Mexico than Monaco , so naturally I loaded my Rouen set up for the race !  By Lap 2 I was in 8th place but had to over brake to avoid rear ending Fran & causing a massive chain reaction , my off lost me a stack of places having to wait for everyone to pass before I could recover , I then hit the barriers going into the twizzely bit and the re bound sent me into the Honda of  P Byles  sending him into a bit of a twizz  ( sorry for that, hope it didn't ruin your race too much )  Billy drove through the carnage but then lost it coming out of the hairpin , so I got my next to last place back again . Somehow finished 8th only 2 laps down in a pretty lonely race , what an achievement

Well, wish I had uploaded a Rouen set up Bernie. Unfortunately my setup was much more "ruin". I managed to make the friendly coop into a wild beast

Went for a quick look at Solitude. Not sure what sort of time would be competitive but my 4:15 sighter lap certainly would not be 

Took that down to 3:58 and caught a few slides and started to really enjoy myself. Then I crashed...

If I can take another 30 seconds off I might not qualify at the back... lol.

Congrats to Doni and Dave for the podium and grats to all finishers as well! A city track like this one does not forgive a lot of mistakes.

In the beginning I did not like the track as well. The stop-and-go characteristic prevented me from finding a rhythm. I even thought about skipping this race. I really needed some practice before I started to like the circuit. Eventually I liked braking into these slow corners and I had quite some fun. After quali I was surprised being over 1s faster than anybody except Bob. I think this track needs a good amount of training and focus to stay out of the barriers for 29 laps.

I'm not a great fan of this track either. Too "Point and Squirt" for me and a bit slippery. However, that doesn't mean there are not lessons to be learnt here. Markus and Doni showed what can be done with the heavy BRM, it looks like they have mastered the hard braking and hard acceleration better than me. I was trying to get the power down early and to use the throttle to rotate the car but I'm obviously not good enough at executing that technique without generating excessive oversteer (which cost me lap time). A better setup would have helped but developing that is a skill in itself.

So for me, whilst I didn't like the track, the race has highlighted an area I need to work on  

I had an engine explode in qually. It went bang over the bump on the main straight. So in the race I lifted over the bump to make sure I didn't over-rev the engine and so it survived the entire race.

Grats to Dave on a podium and top placed Privateer. Well deserved, great driving.
