Season 37 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 6 – Silverstone
The sixth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Silverstone in England. Silverstone is built on the site of a World War II bomber base, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The track hosted the very first F1 championship race in 1950. The British Grand Prix has been permanently held here since 1987. The airfield's three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track. The first two races were held on the runways themselves, with the 1949 International Trophy switching to the perimeter track. This arrangement was used for the 1950 and 1951 Grands Prix. In 1952 the start line was moved from the Farm Straight to the present Finish Straight, and this layout remained largely unaltered for the following 35 years.

The 1954 race was won by José Froilán González in a Ferrari followed by Mike Hawthorn in another Ferrari. The final podium place was claimed by Onofre Marimón in a Maserati. After after colliding several times with oil drums in a difficult handling car, Juan Manuel Fangio eventually finished fourth in his Mercedes. The Englishman, Mike Hawthorn, spoiled what would have been an all Argentinian podium.

The 1956 race, Stirling Moss qualified on pole in his Maserati with Juan Manuel Fangio in a Ferrari second after posting exactly the same time (1:41.0). Stirling Moss' luck didn't hold for the race and he retired with a broken axle. This left Juan Manuel Fangio to claim the win. Alfonso de Portago and Peter Collins shared the second placed Ferrari with the Frenchman Jean Behra finishing third in his Maserati.

Since 1975 the track has been heavily modified with the introduction of chicanes etc – but tonight we will be using the same layout used in the 1954 and 1956 races.

Hi Phil,

I think that I should only have 17 tokens.  But if you insist on giving me the other three then I can put them to good use!

Hi Phil,

I think that I should only have 17 tokens.  But if you insist on giving me the other three then I can put them to good use!

I've got you driving these:
Connaught Type B   Gordini Type 16    Gordini Type 16   Mercedes-Benz W196 SL    Lancia D50

Which works out to be:
10 + (10 - 5) + (10 - 0) + (10 - 0) + (10 -20) + (10 - 15)  = 20

So I think the 20 is right.

Ooops!

Thanks Phil.  I had changed my car for Reims but not updated the price.

Good job you are on the ball!

A good choice Clive, you still managed to win without spending the extra 3 tokens on the Merc. Perfect Judgment Smiley . I think you'll need all the tokens you can get to fend off Mr Evil. The championship is very tight between you two again this season.

The scrutineers rumbled you Bernie, but it could have been Gladys or Mable Glutbucket that tipped them off. Either way, no extra tokens this time  Grin.

Hi Phil,

Can you confirm that to me please =

You have to add 10 points to your total points before a race to find out the maximum total that we are entitled to for the choice of the car?
Example for me, 13 points before the race + 10 points to start, so I am entitled to 23 points?

Thank you for the details and server training.

Hi Alain
Yes you are correct. 13 + 10 = 23. So you have enough tokens to drive any car.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error. There was no token overspend for this round so no one is disqualified.

I did much better than expected here, I didn't make any big mistakes which is unusual for me. I do like the Maserati, I've not driven it much but I find it easy to drive, good handing and good engine.

I managed to hang onto the top five for the first couple of laps whilst the tyres warmed up and I got into a good rhythm. I nipped past Tagomago and got on the back of Alain. I had a great battle with Alain and Bastian for six or seven laps (I think) swapping places several times. Fortunately for me I managed to get ahead and break the tow. I set off in pursuit of JonnyO but I didn't expect to make much progress. To my surprise I did get a lot closer. Probably helped by JonnyO's trip up the banking after Club. I saw the Vanwall bouncing along the banking in the distance and I was sure JonnyO had trashed his car but he continued having lost 5 or 6 seconds. With 3 laps to go I got within about 50 metres of JonnyO but I couldn't get any closer, he was just too good. Still, a podium finish with the leader still in my sight was a great result for me.
