Season 37 - SC67 - Alfa vs Porsche Cup – Round 6 - Castle Combe

Round 6 we will be at Castle Combe, a motor racing circuit in Wiltshire, England, approximately 20 miles (32 km) from Bristol. The circuit is based on the perimeter track of a former World War II airfield, and was opened for racing in 1950. The Castle Combe airfield opened in May 1941 on land of the Castle Combe estate, owned by the Gorst family, operating as RAF Castle Combe for seven years before being decommissioned in 1948. It was a fighter-base for Polish airmen. Castle Combe Circuit opened in 1950, and the first meeting was staged on 8 July by the Bristol Motorcycle & Light Car Club. Over the next few years, the circuit attracted star names such as Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Roy Salvadori and John Surtees. The circuit's first motorcycle event was in 1952, organised by the Wessex Centre.

Castle Combe has staged many different motorsport disciplines over the years. In 1997, Nigel Greensall established a new lap record. His Tyrrell 022 lapped the circuit at 130.93 mph (210.71 km/h). However, this was the last year that the circuit would remain unaltered. A tragic accident involving the death of a spectator forced the owners into installing two new chicanes in order to slow the cars down. The new layout was slightly longer at 1.85 miles (2.98 km), and was completed over the winter of 1998-1999. Formula Three returned to Castle Combe in 2001. However, it would not stay long. In 2005, the circuit was issued with a noise nuisance order, which meant that the circuit had to reduce its noise level. The British Formula Three Championship and the British GT Championship were both louder than permitted, and so were prevented from returning.

Please check the Season 37 details regarding rules and the Alfa vs Porsche Cup pages in particular.

Handicapping
"Works" drivers will carry extra weight in form of 10 gallons of fuel (to remain in the tank after the race).
Drivers are expected to behave in a fair and gentlemanly fashion and declare how much fuel they have left after the race.

In order to ensure there will be 10 gallons of fuel left after the race, the minimum race fuel load for Works is expected to be:
  • Alfa T33 = 23 gallons (87 litres)
  • Porsche = 24 gallons (91 litres)

Two resets will be allowed (there is no need to carry out a Stop and Go in the pit lane if you make a Shift-R).
Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.
Only reported incidents will be moderated.

And let's see all those who must run under a BoP fuel load use that in qualifying, too.  Setting a time on fumes skews the grid and race.

I'm very pleased I installed the virtual mirror in the Alfa tonight, I needed it! I got a clean start and settled in behind David. I tried to put him under pressure but he didn't buckle, in fact it was me that spun out on Avon Rise and David was long gone. However, that left me in a very enjoyable race long tussle with Doni. We were nose to tail for the rest of the race, only one tiny mistake from Doni gave me the one chance to overtake. We had an unfortunate bump at one point but we waited for each other and continued the fun. Great racing Doni and thanks for being a good sport, you are a very fair driver and great fun to race with.

I've had a quick look at the replay Doni, you did pack in a lap early. Tris was right behind us, the chequered flag was for him. I was so focussed on my driving, prib and the mirror, I didn't see the flagman. But to be fair he only appeared when I was a few yards from the line.

Just had a look at the Privateers championship. It is very tight. Only the points between a 2nd and 3rd place finish separating the top 3 drivers.

It's funny to see Doni winning the 2 first races, then you won the 2 following, and finally I won the 2 last.
And all three, we have only one non scoring race.

Grats to our podium!  Stunning speed.

A somewhat disappointing field re entries.  C'mon, lads!

I had a terrific battle with Phil for most of the race.  The major contact between us fairly late in the going was entirely down to me as I mis-judged the Hammerdown curve to the left following Old Paddock Bend.  I failed to move sufficiently to my right to give you space.  Thanks for checking up so we could continue our battle.

The finish was a bit of a head-scratcher.  My pit board was showing two laps to run so if I was going to make a pass for position on Phil, now was the time.  Imagine my surprise coming 'round Camp Corner to start what I thought would be the last lap only to find the checker waving.  DOH!  Did I mis-read my signals?  No, as it turns out.  Tris was coming up to lap me...for the second time...and GPL is coded to have the starter flagman kick in some seconds before the leader arrives.  That flag was for him, not me.  I got out of the throttle and just tooled around to get another lap wondering what was going on.  Not likely to have managed to challenge Phil anyway so the finish order is entirely genuine.

Did anyone else notice that there is a stretch of track in the vicinity of Quarry corner that causes GPL to crash.
Happened in qually and during the race. On the upside I'd managed 23 laps so I scored as many points as I was ever going to get.
Still struggling with how to drive these cars at a decent pace but they are good fun.
