Season 37 - SC67 - Alfa vs Porsche Cup – Round 8 - Targa Florio

We will be in Sicily and drive a lap at the Targa Florio.
The Targa Florio was an open road endurance automobile race held in the mountains of Sicily near the island's capital of Palermo. Founded in 1906, it was the oldest sports car racing event, part of the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1973. While the first races consisted of a whole tour of the island, the track length in the race's last decades was limited to the 72 kilometres (45 mi) of the Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie, which was lapped 11 times.

IMPORTANT

Please start your last qualifying lap with minimum ~ 30min time left!

GPL will shut the quali after ~11min overtiming, even if you are 100m from the finish line!

We will do "only" one racing lap, (but the server will show 2) so please be cooperative when a faster car/driver is behind you.

Unlimited resets will be allowed - please be carefull to not endanger others.

When you crossed the finish line after the race lap - please stop your car and leave the track within 500m.
IMPORTANT

Please check the Season 37 details regarding rules and the Alfa vs Porsche Cup pages in particular.

Race List =  IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8
IP Address = look at iGOR
Race date = 20-11-2020
GPL mod = SC67 - Alfa + Porsche only
60fps patch used = 60fpsV2newmod
Track dir = Targa
Qualification = 20:30  UK time -> 60min
Race = race starts at ~21:30 UK time
Race length = ~40 min -> 1 lap
Damage Model = Intermediate
Replay = here

Handicapping
"Works" drivers will carry extra weight in form of 10 gallons of fuel (to remain in the tank after the race).
Drivers are expected to behave in a fair and gentlemanly fashion and declare how much fuel they have left after the race.

In order to ensure there will be 10 gallons of fuel left after the race, the minimum race fuel load for Works is expected to be:
  • Alfa T33 = 23 gallons (87 litres)
  • Porsche = 24 gallons (91 litres)

Two resets will be allowed (there is no need to carry out a Stop and Go in the pit lane if you make a Shift-R).
Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

Only reported incidents will be moderated.

We normally don't allow resets during qualifying. I assume the restriction will be relaxed for this race and resets will be allowed. If not drivers will need to do a clean qualifying lap.

Is this round to be just a straight up race with cars assembled on the grid as per normal?  Should prove interesting.  Smiley

Just a reminder - at Funliga the Targa is a fixed track each season, with wichever mod we drive - and we do a normal race start.

We use TS and if there is a problem we talk about it...and a slower driver lets pass a faster!

Of course there are hardly any possibilities to pass without the help of the opponent.

Be aware that not the opponent is the problem but the track, so let him pass.

The driver doing less shift-r will win this challenge.

Although I am in awe of the team that put this magnificent track together for GPL, I find that I cannot find the commitment to learn, or even become vaguely familiar with, all of the twists and turns.
My only strategy is, to be sure that I have a very comfortable and predictable setup and enough energy to maintain concentration for the whole lap. Because one thing is for sure, the moment you relax that scenery rushes to meet your car  Undecided.

Point and Squirt, but only when you can see clear tarmac !! lol

I know most of the track but with some twists and turns I am still surprised,
therefore the advice to have a secure setup is worth its weight in gold.

Sector 2 is most difficult with often nearly same looking corners.

For me it is like a vacation trip with a small red speedster,
it is the great vacation feeling when you see the Mediterranean Sea for the first time.

I haven't driven this track for a few years. Phew it is tough. A case of survival for me given my level of track knowledge. I do like the challenge but I think it will take years of practice to learn this track properly.

Grats to Lasse on the win and fastest lap, great driving!

That was a very tough race but more fun than I expected. I got caught up in a lot of incidents. Several times cars spun in front of me and blocked the track. I just had to wait for them to recover, there was no way to get past.

I was very lucky to catch Doni right at the end of the long straight near the end of the lap. The slipstream made the difference. A great drive by David has closed up the Privateers championship. Anything can happen in the last 2 races!

Gats to Lasse for the win and to all finishers.
Like Phil, it has been a very long time since I drove around Targa. My single qually lap was OK'ish and the car felt stable and predictable.

But during quali I was on my own and could see the track ahead, once the race started I realised just how much having other cars around makes a difference. It also helps if you don't start with default setup!!

I realised very quickly that I was not driving the same car and that I had screwed my setup selection, but decided that I would simply try and survive to the end.   It did not go well lol.
Driving in close company I missed braking points and apexes, the different setup did not help and as a result I caused, and got involved in, far too many  multi-car pile ups.
Like Phil there were a few times when a car ahead blocked the road and I just had to wait, nervously glancing in the mirror as the following cars arrive to add to the mayhem. After several solo excursions and at least 3 resets, I decided to make the race safer for everyone by quitting  Undecided

If I ignore the mistake with the setup, I wonder if my approach to this race was misguided. Because Targa is so narrow and twisty passing a car ahead is all but impossible, unless they allow you to pass. Even if the car ahead makes a mistake, unless they run off track, there is a 90% chance that they will block the road and it is still impossible to pass. Being in the lead is a huge advantage.
In an ideal race I wanted to be near the front maybe tailing the 3 fast guys up front, they would pull away and give me a clear view of the road  Grin but that was never going to happen last night lol  Undecided

Congrats to Lasse and the podium... and all finishers !

I made a good quali time and could be happy to be 4 on the grid.
But during the 3 or 4 first minutes, driving in close company with many other cars with only 25 -30 fps, I made a big mistake.
Apologizes to several other drivers impacted by my accident, some of them had to reset.

After I restarted, 3 drivers in front of me were going out of the track (Phil was among them), so I was 5th and concentrated myself for chasing Axel until he made a mistake at the exit of a turn in a village street, I didn't see him and I think there was a little contact between our cars but hopefully without consequences for both cars.

So a bad start but a happy end to finish 4th.

For the Privateers championship, Phil is still a strong leader with 322 pts (279 if we discard the 2 worst results), followed by me 304 (267) and Doni 297 (260).
See you at Monza 1967 (Ginetto's track ?)
