On the approach to T1 on the first lap; Jari is following the train of vehicles into T1 at a distance of 5 or 6 car lengths.
Jos is at the tail end of the group in front and has braked to take T1 slightly wide as he is directly outside of Gavin Halls' Sierra.
Jari hits Jos on the inside of his rear bumper and half spins him at the Apex of the corner.

Jari had not achieved overlap at the turn in point.

Despite being a first corner incident I am only issuing a 1 position penalty as Jari DID wait to allow Jos to continue.

Moderator's Report

Kimi is at the rear of a group of 5 cars exiting the Chicane and approaching T2 - at the front Mark P and Jari are side by side and have to lift in order to take the turn cleanly.
This causes a concertina effect through the following cars with Mark (J), Jos and Kimi all making light nose to bumper contact despite attempting to avoid one another.

From Lorenzo's driving position it is not possible to clearly see that Mark and Jari are alongside approaching the corner, so he is likely not expecting the group to slow as much as they did.
However, Kimi's brake lights were visible for over a second before impact and Lorenzo didn't lift until just before contact, although he did swerve in an attempt to avoid it.

I feel that contact would be all-but unavoidable in this situation even if Lorenzo had slowed earlier, however the incident was made worse due to Lorenzo not lifting until too late.

The standard 2 position penalty has been reduced to 1 position to reflect the conditions, however Lorenzo still bares some avoidable fault here so a penalty is warranted.
As tires (and drivers) are still cold on the opening lap drivers should be cautious when following other vehicles closely, as they may not behave as expected.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

Welcome to Round 4 of the DTM season at the legendary Avus circuit just outside of Berlin.
Ballast will be applied to the following drivers as follows:

+20Kgs = Manteos
+15Kgs = FMG
+10Kgs = Jos
+ 5Kgs  = Fabri

Avus dates back as far as 1921 when the first race was held on the original circuit, the early 90's layout we'll be racing on is far removed from that though as it's just over 2Km long and mostly features left turns - with a chicane and a single right hander thrown in for variation. We'll be using the slightly wider on-line variant of the circuit to lessen the chances of any multi-car pileups occurring on the exit of the chicane.

When joining the server please ensure you select the correct car.

Password: see above

Practice: 19:30 (45 mins)
Qual: 20:15 (15 mins)
Race: 20:30  (2x 22 lap races)

Cars allowed:
Alfa 155 (+11Kg ballast, 10% (-42Hp) restrictor)
BMW M3 DTM (no handicap)
Ford Sierra R500 V3.03 (+20Kg Ballast, 45% restrictor (turbos don't respond the same as N/A before you ask!)
https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/ford-sierra-cosworth-rs500-pack.24027/
Mercedes 190E DTM (+6Kg ballast, 1% (-6.3Hp) restrictor).

Track: Avus (wide)
https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/avus-dtm-90s.27853/

EXTRA CAMERAS
Avus only comes with 1 camera file - so I've made some more!
FMG cam 1 is slightly more biased at single car shots. 2 is more for multiple cars - the Static cams are really intended for big grids..
Grab 'em here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/00xvua0jyau7jxs/Avus%20Cameras.rar?dl=0
These go into the '*your steam directory*\steamapps\common\assettocorsa\content\tracks\avus_dtm\normal\data' folder (you'll see the other camera file if you're in the right place).

The first lap of each race will be moderated - any incidents that require moderation beyond that point will require a report to be raised in the normal fashion.

There is a password on the server. Lately server has been password free for practice? The usual one I tried didn't work.

Sorry - I know what that'll be. I always upload the race files and then edit them to make the practice server, I've obviously forgotten to remove the password Embarrassed

It'll be off by 08:00 this morning!

Fantastic document Mark, very relevant. Thanks a lot for bringing this to us.

I did a quick test yesterday with the Sierra, including the ballast, and I'm quite worried if the pole time (53.27!?) from the real DTMs is around the top times in the online race. I was nowhere close to those times  Shocked

The other important issue the video brings, for Tim to consider, is the events on L1 hairpin and red flagging the race... Would we do the same if that happens next Wednesday? I know that some online platforms explicitly say that, under no circumstances, a race would be restarted... But I would think restarting would be the right approach in Avus if something like this happens...

Thoughts?

The problem with that is that I'm a driver and fully intend to be up front where I won't see any carnage - this makes re-starts near impossible as we won't have an independent non-driving steward watching things. Additionally the cause of the incident prior to the re-start would HAVE to be recorded for later moderation and I'm not sure how AC would handle replays in that situation.

T1 is a major risk for a pileup (Same will go for Norrisring later in the series) but so far we've done incredibly well. I don't know if that's the mandatory moderation of L1 (I am checking and I'm liking what I see - things are much more careful than they have been in the past) or just that we're maturing as drivers..

If we had a series commentator maybe that would be a job for them here - but as we don't I say just be careful as we have no reliable way of declaring re-starts on the night.

I know GPL have additional penalties in place for L1 incidents for some events - I'm not sure if they are standard here in the rest of Srou, but they can be adopted in the future if needed. I won't change important parts of the rules this close to an event though - someone may have actually read them and could get upset Wink

I understand the complexity at this stage and the lack of a reliable method with no stewards available. Let's hope for the best then. But that T1 is trouble even with us all trying our best. Good luck to us.

How about an Orange zone for lap 1 for this track? Hit someone from behind and you have to take a drive-thru penalty?  Works very well in the Porsche cup series with a 30+ car field. You still get to race but you will find everyone now gives a little space to the cars around them on cold tyres/brakes. Win-win  Smiley

But have to say i was very impressed with the lap1 in both races at Nogaro. Near 20 cars through those tight turns was excellent  thumbup1

I think we leave it for now - If there is a blatant problem then we can look at something like the 'Orange zone' for the next really bad event (I.e. Norrisring, I think the rest should be good).
That will give time for rules and penalties to be put down and considered well in advance, there is a very real risk that introducing things at this stage will lead to confusion - especially if someone isn't ready all the posts in the thread.

An Orange zone will need very clear rules behind it I think in order to work fairly.

I bet there's a good chance this time to destroy Alfas, especially for BMW. So I'm prepared to a full race battle against everone, and already mounted rostrums on the wheels of my chariot...  Grin Grin Grin Grin

I would be just curious to try Tim's setup for Merc. I always hated that car, and never been fast with it. Even if it's difficult to put together the perfect lap, BMW has a potential laptime in my hand of 55.2. Instead, after 50 laps with Merc, if I put together my best intermediate, I'm half a second slower in it. Merc has a good top speed, a good braking, a good cornering speed, but when it's time to record a timed lap it comes out I'm always slower in it. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
