Season 38 – 69Xtra Fun Race –  Montjuïc Park 69

For the last round of the 38 xmas fun season we go to Montjuich Park 69, this new version has the correct double jump and a narrower approach to the hairpin. The Griego to Vias section is also narrower.

This track was a street circuit on Montjuich mountain above Barcelona. A twisty tricky circuit, it was the site of the tragic 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. Many drivers felt that the circuit was unsafe, and two time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi withdrew in protest before the start of the race. On lap 26 the Embassy Hill-Lola car of Rolf Stommelen left the track, killing five people. The race was subsequently stopped at half distance and half points awarded, with Jochen Mass being recorded as the winner. Lella Lombardi became the first female driver to score world championship points, taking 0.5 points for 6th place. Formula One never returned to the circuit after the accident.

I went to Barcelona to watch this Grand Prix on the magnificent MontJuich circuit .
I was in the crowd only a few feet away from where Rolf Stommolen crashed  into the spectators
It really was a terrible scene , every time I race GPL here I think of those poor people who lost there lives on that day,  all because of those ridiculous wings and the barriers that collapsed due to a poor installation .  Sad Sad Sad
Fortunately we can race GPL with impunity !

I have seen many races in my life, the only fatal accident was at Hockenheim in 1968, but that happened in a spectator-free zone without crash barriers....
We were sitting in the Sachskurve and saw the ambulance on its way back.

But the most spectacular accident I saw was ~ 1968 in the Ostkurve when Helmut Kelleners lost his brakes in the new Mercedes AMG 300SEL 6.3
It crashed with full force at a shallow angle at about 270 km/h into the concrete wall and knocked it over in front of us. The car turned 180° and Helmut opened the door uninjured.

That was a lucky escape for you Bernie. GPL gives some impression of what it must have been like to race these beasts around a street circuit but without the danger. Wing failure isn't something that is simulated in GPL but I don't need a failure to crash on this track. The humps a difficult enough without a crippled car, no wonder he crashed.

Speaking of wings, I have never really tried to use the 69s in anger - I assume in such a tight circuit that we want pretty high wing settings, would 11 be about right or all the way to 15 (not very Spinal Tap  Grin). Is there a rule of thumb for how balanced/close they need be front vs rear?

My rule of thumb with wings is

The more corners the more wings! - there is only one short straight road at Montjuich...

And dont forget to make the wheelrate proportional stiffer!

I prefer a little less wing at the rear, but that is depending on your driving Wink

Most here know it's possible to change the cars appearance, by clicking the GRAPHICS arrow, on the player, car selection page.  High wings for Montjuich.  Ours have been tested and do not break, but give no extra speed. Undecided

Same here, at about that point too.  I have a new PC and my connection was shocking, fps dropped to 35 at times and game play was stuttery...hmm.  When racing here in 2015 with my old PC all was fine.  Disappointed because my new system is a big leap from t'old un.  I pretty much have all Win 10 security turned off too, any advice welcome!  Hope to sort it by the weekend, summat to do during Covid.  BTW did I hear 1 in 50 have it atm in the UK?  Yikes.  Keep safe everyone.

Cheers, Bob.

Baab, I think 1 in 50 Londoners were reported as having it, but the rates per 100k are shocking everywhere in the South East.

That was fun but demanding, I'm knackered. Just wanted to say well done to Martin for the maddest drive I have ever seen. You passed me sideways and still managed to reign it in for the corner after the jumps and I was amazed by how quickly you were going with no apparent control  Grin Cheesy Wink Grin

Well done to anyone that finished - disappointed that my Core.ini file didn't stop Baab's issues, was looking forward to throwing that at you for ever after!!!

The track was perfect for me. 60fps the whole time and no lag. Great track but very hard work in these cars, not a moment to rest. Managed a podium but only because of mistakes/misfortune ahead. Great race with Arf, Fulvio and Martin. I had 11 deg front and 13 deg rear so I had a decent top speed which made me difficult to pass. But on the climb up to the finish I had to feather the throttle which I think allowed Martin and Fulvio to climb all over my gearbox.

Hope you enjoyed it Arf, if you haven't driven these cars much you picked a baptism of fire on this track. It was tough! Grats to Andreas on the win and Fulvio for a very mature drive. Applied constant pressure until I cracked!

I had a GPL lockup/freeze in qually with about 5mins left - just as I touched the barrier on the left side somewhere within sector 2.

The race itself was ok, mostly 60FPS  but I was getting low FPS at times, around 48-50FPS.  Practice run alone earluer on the server seemed a bit better.

For the race, I switched off the fountains, removed any track sounds & used the lesser horizon/sky options.

Cheers,
Dave.
