Moderator's Report

Summary
After leading the race from lap 2 until lap 15, Clive Loynes lost the lead which paved the way for a hectic final two laps. First Petr ran wide and Evil Clive took the lead, then Evil ran wide and Petr regained the lead. On the last lap Phil Thornton tangled with Clive Loynes and Petr ran wide again so Evil Clive crossed the line in first place. Petr recovered to finish in second place with Raoni Frizzo crossing the line in third. Following moderation, the podium places have been adjusted with Petr declared the winner, Raoni Frizzo in second place and JonnyO in third.

Post-Race Analysis and Recommendations
It is very difficult to take avoiding action in the 55GP cars but this is no reason to adopt a different set of rules. The same rules apply to this and every other mod; which is that the following driver is responsible for avoiding rear-end shunt incidents. Having a green light on the dashboard doesn’t mean the brakes are at their best, it takes time for the brakes to recover during the race. The brakes are only cool on the start line. This means the “safe gap” referred to in the penalty guidelines is larger with the 55GP cars than it is with any other car set.

Lap 1 – Dolphin Corner – Petr Romanov and Evil Clive
Evil Clive is pushing hard on the opening lap. He gets too close to Petr on the apex of Dolphin Corner and contact is made. Clive bounces into the sand and Petr is spun around. Both drivers can continue apparently unscathed, but they lose several places. Clive waited until Petr had rejoined the race before carefully continuing himself.

Petr did nothing wrong.

Clive was just too close and was unable to take avoiding action when he realised contact was inevitable. It is very difficult to take evasive action in these cars and allowance must be made for the car ahead being slower than expected. Unless a genuine overtaking attempt is being made, a driver must maintain a safe distance.

Lap 1 incidents attract an additional 1 place penalty.

  • EvilClive (E vil55)penalty — Blatant Rear End Shunt plus an additional 1 place penalty — 3 places lost

Server replay time: 0h44m40s

Lap 16 – Esso Bend – Phil Thornton and Clive Loynes
After leading for most of the race, Clive makes a mistake on lap 15 running wide at British Colonial Loop and drops back which allows Petr Romanov and Evil Clive to overtake him and for Phil Thornton to catch up. As Clive approaches Esso bend on the last lap, he is rear-ended by Phil. The GPL crash engine goes into overdrive and both cars are thrown into the air. Miraculously both drivers can continue but Clive loses a lot of time trying to extricate himself from the sand.

Clive did nothing wrong.

Phil approached Esso bend at exactly the same speed and line as on previous laps. But he didn’t realise Clive was slower than usual until it was too late to take evasive action. It isn’t easy to slow these cars down or make a quick change of direction once a driver has committed to a line. The contact was unintentional, but Phil must take responsibility for the incident. Having closed appreciably in one lap he should have realised Clive was slower than usual and Phil should have been more careful.

Good morning all

What a race, what a change, incredible and worthy of a noir novel this end of the race for Clive in the lead almost the entire race.

For my part, with the best car on paper, I hoped and had to finish well. Departure 4 I pass quickly 5 then come back 4, 3 and even 2 following each other's mistakes. Behind Clive and 8 laps from the end I must ensure.

1 error or too much inside in a bend I find myself in the vegetation, 2 places lost, good 5 is not too bad but another error and hop 7 before breaking my engine 2 laps from the end.
Sorry for the unlucky ones and Bravo Evil for this great victory which is not due to chance because you are very fast in 55.

See you soon and thank you for the organization

I  will probably get a place penalty for the tap on Peter's 250F in Lap 1.  Undecided, so maybe Peter should be congratulated?

At least six places if not more I should say!

I saw wheels flying off.  I was really disapointed when I realised that you were both still in the race!   Roll Eyes

lol Clive, .........

well none of those wheels originated from my Connaught, and if Peter's Maserati was that quick on 3 wheels for the remaining 15 laps we might as well hand him the trophy right now!!

TBH I was a little surprised/disappointed when the contact occurred  Undecided. I was quite chuffed to have outdragged you to T1 and steal 2nd spot, but even more pleased to have hooked up in Peter's slipstream through the first corners. No excuses from me, I was simply 2 metres too close and the crash box gremlins decided to react and throw Peter and myself into the sand and the weeds. Apologies to Peter as it made his race very difficult from there on.

Maybe there is a crumb of comfort for you Clive in that I lose a few points, but when the various penalties play out Jonny's decision to run the Gordini might prove to be a masterstroke. Ironically I almost chose that car too, but wimped out at the last minute  Roll Eyes

Yes, my race after 1 lap incident was gone out of plane.  I understood, that car is ok, and i can still win the race. After 4  or 5 laps i cautch up C. Loynes on the first corner, but, hi is spinned, and i to avoid a collision, spinned too.
It was terrible.  After that i again rolled back to 3-4 position.
Not sure, that car is all right, i tryed to come back to lead group.
On the few last laps, at first has mistake C. Loynes, after him and I go too wide on s2, and lost lead.
i don't won't, that race result is changed after race.  But incident on first lap must learned according to rule  champs.
Sorry for my english.

I've loaded the chassis the drivers used into the token calculator spreadsheet.  For the next race the available tokens will be as declared in the table below (the table will also appear in the next race announcement).  The calculated values are automated but selecting the cars is a manual process so please check your tokens to make sure I haven't made a silly error.

As this was the first race, nobody had a token overspend.

I fully accept the mod report and penalty.

Just a note about Phil's comments regarding green lights on the dashboard and the % of brakes available on the start line. At the start of this race my dashboard light was RED and I had to nurse the car through the first half of the lap to recover some decent brakes. Rather ironic that just as I get a green light, I failed to slow down enough to avoid the car in front  Undecided

So, it might be worth checking your brake light when you are on the start grid, before you discover the problem as you hurtle into T1 with the pack.? I'm not sure if this is a "random" feature of the 55's or simply a graphics glitch. But I certainly felt that I did not have 100% brakes available for T1 lap 1. This is not the first time that I have noticed this issue on the start line.
