Season 38 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 1 –  Goodwood '65

Goodwood has never held a Formula One Championship race, but regularly held a non championship F1 race called the Glover Trophy (also known as the Richmond Trophy). When the cars were becoming too dangerously fast, the track owners decided to stop racing rather than add chicanes to slow the cars. The last Glover Trophy (before its more recent appearance in the Goodwood Revival meetings) was in 1965. This was won by Jim Clark in a Lotus 33. He shared the lap record from that race with Jackie Stewart in a BRM of 1 minute 20.4 seconds. Previous winners of the Glover Trophy included racing royalty of the time - Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Mike Hawthorn, Graham Hill and Innes Ireland (twice).

This is the first race in the Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2), 1968 and 1969. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group & keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Groups 7, 8 or 9.

Full Driver lists and divisional rules including manufacturer groups can be found here Championship Standings page

Disqualify me. I forgot the rules. I reset and then pitted. I couldn't take care the Honda's engine. I had 3 engine failures. It's strange that all 3 were behind Pete. The one in practice and the first one in the race were identical.

Apologies for being a (barely)mobile chicane,

Between the practice/qually session (where I set a PB) & lap1-2, something happened to my throttle.
I thought iniitally an engine problem from being rear-ended,  but after my reset that did not make any difference.

As I'd practiced,  I kept going with the hope of seeing 50% distance.
Tried to keep out of the way as much as possible, but unfotunately the pace was getting slower & slower.

Thanks for being so honest Greg. I've set you as DQ in the race results but the championship table won't be updated to reflect the DQ until the moderation is completed.

Unlucky Dave, that must have been why I jumped you at the start! You kept well out of the way, the 28 privateers points should come in useful later in the season Wink

Just getting to know my new car...Smiley it has 6 Gears Cheesy

I had made 2 setups - one with 5 and one with 6 gears used. Not a tenth difference but less shifting with 5.
End of quali I found that St Mary's is faster in shorter 3rd gear so I choose the 6 for the race.

After the pile-up in the 4th lap I was almost last, caught behind this wall...
But I had the fun to roll up the field from behind, because I only drove the same times as the top, the podium was out of reach. Pete delivered a hard fight until the end.

Yes, lap 4 was a bit disappointing for me.  Undecided

I had a reasonable start and held my 4th place with Axel and Andreas chasing hard in their Coopers. I had qualified on race fuel, so I knew that my pace should be competitive, but I just needed to be sure my tyres were warm before I pushed.
Alain, Raoni and Tris were ahead, with Alain using the power of the BRM to just ease away a little.
Raoni and Tris were racing hard and I was a little concerned that they might be too close so early in the race?, so I allowed a small gap to open and tried to stay safe from Axel behind me.

My fears were realised on Lap 4 when Raoni got sideways at Woodcote and Tris could not avoid contact. I saw it all happen and thought I could avoid the melee by cutting across the grass on the inside, but one of the cars rolled backwards right into my intended path. Grass does not give a great deal of grip to allow sharp changes of direction and I hit the other car hard, which flipped me upside down...no S/R race over  Sad.

Just a racing incident, but a little miffed that I was not able to complete the race with a car/track combo that I enjoy.

Grats to the podium and on to the next race  Wink

With the slowest car ...and the slowest driver, rearended(*) on 1st lap followed by a stop and go ...I could be happy to finish 8th !
I will use the McLaren M2B for the next race of this serie ...another slow car !  Undecided

(*) I was rearended on 1st lap, and the other driver was very smart to wait for me, but I immediately slowed down to let it go ...because I did not want to be rearended a second time which meant a retirement (only one stop and go is allowed).
So please don't wait for me in such a case except when the finish is close, but certainly not on the 1st lap.

Good morning all

Happy for this victory but sad for what I saw on the slows down and the incident of the 4th lap because I am in difficulty at the penultimate turn and Raoni touches me not being able to avoid me which causes behind a pile-up.
After that, I have several seconds in advance that I probably would not have kept with Raoni speed.
At the end of the race, my friend BGB quickly came back to me, despite a few small mistakes I managed to stay ahead.

Thank you everyone and see you soon
Thanks to the organizers

Hi Rainier. That other driver was Will, my son. It was his first time racing with UKGPL so was trying simply to play it safe. He felt terrible that he hit you, so he very politely (as he's been brought up properly) waited for you. He ended up getting kicked off the server through politeness as well. He landed in the hay bales and then was watching Pribluda so carefully for a gap that he waited for over 30 seconds and got booted. It's great having your kids drive in a race with you, even if you end up staring at Pribluda to see where he is. Over protective parenting kicks in when you see your child driving at 100mph without a seatbelt.
