Season 38 – 1967 F1 WORKS – Round 2 – Montjuich v2

For the 2nd round we go to Montjuich Hill near Barcelona.
This track was a street circuit on Montjuich mountain above Barcelona. A twisty tricky circuit, it was the site of the tragic 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. Many drivers felt that the circuit was unsafe, and two time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi withdrew in protest before the start of the race. On lap 26 the Embassy Hill-Lola car of Rolf Stommelen left the track, killing five people. The race was subsequently stopped at half distance and half points awarded, with Jochen Mass being recorded as the winner. Lella Lombardi became the first female driver to score world championship points, taking 0.5 points for 6th place. Formula One never returned to the circuit after the accident.

I thought the same. The race is likely to be one of attrition. Lets hope that at least a few of us will get to the end somehow  wheelchair

Nice going there, Markus.  Sad

Frank...  Your instance on remaining on track inverted cost me 15 seconds while I was trapped behind you.  Grrr...

Short race here, rear ended in the twisty section on lap 2. Car flew to the moon and back and landed on the wheels right side up. But the car was heavily damaged and pulling to the right. I crashed out at t1 on the next lap when it pulled me into the fence.

Same here. Game just froze with only 7 laps to go.

And sorry for the lap one incident. I spun after the hairpin but could go on... Hope it did not cause too much trouble to all of you. I had problems hearing my own engine and so I applied to much throttle when I left the corner.

Unfortunately Lasse had some troubles. Before that, it was nice to battle as we were at a similar pace (even when seperated by a few seconds). After Lasse retired I took it a little easier. Feels bad that the race ended with a freeze. I would have liked it very much to claim a victory at such a challenging track!

I didn't fully enjoy this combination of car and track even though it is a great challenge and gives you a satisfying feeling when you master it.
Circuits which require lots of risk have always suited me. I felt that around here as well and took a last-second pole, though credit has to be given to Markus who had the inferior car, but still almost outqualified me.
Then something must have happened in the first 5 corners in the race, because suddenly I was 4 seconds ahead of Markus. That only lasted until lap 5 or something when I completely unncessarily spun at Guardia Urbana, what a stupid driver error... After that I tried to cut the gap to Markus back down and well, my pace was good, but another error into T1 cost me even more time, but I survived a 180 degree spin into the right side of the barrier. Then just a few laps later I repeated the same stupid mistake into T1, just failed to straighten the car enough and spun in the same way as I did previously, though this time my left front tyre fell victim to the wall.
Now I'm just curious to see how many drivers make it to the checkered flag.
I've really got to say that as soon as I saw this track on the calendar, I considered it to be a fragile choice. It's really hard to get the 67s around this circuit, therefore accidents are likely and especially in the first part of the track it's really hard to avoid a spinning/crashing car. Furthermore the pre-season test race around here has shown that the likeliness for screenfreezes is high... Still I enjoyed this challenge in a way.

Edit: Well, as I typed this many drivers experienced a screenfreeze...

Thirty-eight seconds.  That's how far I was off the lead at the end of my first lap.  Never been in such a shit show.

Lap06 and I swung a bit wide in T1.  Car just skated off into the barrier.  Wheel gone bye-bye.  Now I see why.  I opened a saved lap in GPLRA and see that the outside of T1 is configured with concrete, not tarmac.  It has far less grip.  Thanks, track builders.

Apologies to Bastian for a nudge in T1 in an early lap.  You careened off the inner barrier and swung wide.  I thought I was easily through down low til you pinched off the corner.
