Moderator's Report

Summary
An eventful race saw Dulima emerge as the eventual winner. The result of the moderation is that Phil Thornton is demoted to second place with Ricardo demoted down to the third step on the podium (the place adjustments are applied working down the table).

Lap 1 – Lesmos 1 – Philippe Girard, John Woods, Billy Nobrakes and Albert Hallu
Philippe is leading but spins on cold tyres. He tries to recover by doing a 180 degree turn but his car ends up stationary and on the racing line. The following drivers cannot avoid him, and a mass pile-up ensues.

Philippe should have waited for a clear and safe opportunity to recover. Given that this was the first lap it would have undoubtedly meant waiting until the entire field had passed by, but this is the consequence of making a mistake on lap one. It is appreciated that the penalty will not make any difference to the result but it is a lesson for all drivers to learn from.

Lap 1 - Lesmos 1 - John Woods
John has to reset but he didn't perform a Stop and Go in the Pit Stalls.

Lap 2 - Parabolica - Bernie Darwin
Bernie has to reset but he didn't perform a Stop and Go in the Pit Stalls.

Server replay time: 0h05m56s

Lap 4 - Curva Grande - Dave Curtis, Pepe Higdon and Fabio Locarno
Dave is dicing with Eric and in an effort to stay ahead he leaves his braking into Curva Grande to the last second. Dave is aware Eric is on his inside and so he tries to leave room but unfortunately, he runs wide and into the armco. Eric is past and on his way but Dave has to slow down to extricate himself from the barrier. In his desperation to lose as little time as possible, Dave applied too much throttle and spins the car. Pepe is the next driver along and as he rounds Curva Grande he can see Dave’s spinning Eagle so he tries to pass on the left. Unfortunately, he can’t squeeze by and minor contact is made causing him to spin out and he ends up running backwards along the barrier on the outside of Della Roggia. Meanwhile Dave has come to a complete stop facing the hedge, he manages to turn the car to face the correct direction without reversing but he drives straight back into the racing line just as Fabio is approaching. Fabio has to take evasive action and takes to the grass in order to avoid contact.

Pepe Higdon did nothing wrong.

Fabio Locarno was not at fault but he probably could have seen Dave a bit earlier and made a different decision. It would probably have been better to move to the right thus remaining on the tarmac and consequently he would have had a much better chance of retaining control.

Dave should have taken more care when he tried to rejoin. The first time he was simply too aggressive on the throttle as opposed to making a wrong decision. However, on the second rejoin attempt he should have checked his mirrors and noticed Fabio approaching. He should have stayed off the tarmac until Fabio had passed by or possibly crossed over to the other side of the track away from the racing line. He shouldn’t have assumed the racing line whilst travelling at a fraction of the normal racing speed.

Server replay time: 0h06m09s

Lap 4 - Della Roggia - Dave Curtis, Albert Hallu, David Rainier and Fabio Locarno
This is really the second phase of the previous incident. Fabio was struggling to maintain control on the grass and he bounced off the hedge and back onto the tarmac whilst travelling at over 80mph. Dave Curtis has just about recovered from the previous incident and was trying to get up to speed but he couldn’t accelerate hard because he would have hit Fabio. Consequently, Dave was only travelling at 100mph rather than the normal 160+mph when Albert caught him up. Albert tried to avoid rear ending Dave (he had slowed to 120mph from his usual 160+mph) but he couldn’t squeeze past on the right. Contact was made and Albert was sent into a spin. David Rainier was next along and despite recognising the situation and slowing considerably (to 120mph from his normal 160+mph) he had no chance of avoiding Albert’s spinning Eagle.

At these high speeds and particularly where there is a significant speed differential, warp will be a factor and there is some evidence that it was present on this occasion. However, it is not a mitigating factor in this case.

David Rainier did nothing wrong.

Albert Hallu did nothing wrong.

Having taken to the grass to avoid Dave’s very slow Eagle, Fabio bounced off the hedge and back onto the track. At this point it would be harsh to suggest that Fabio could do anything else but try to get up to speed as soon as possible.

Dave Curtis was trying to get up to speed but he was boxed in by Fabio and the stricken Lotus of Pepe Higdon so he had to slow down. If he had stayed further left, Albert and David might have been able to squeeze past. Whilst Albert’s Eagle can be seen in Dave’s mirrors it is fair to say Dave would be concentrating on the car ahead. However, Dave’s first consideration should have been to rejoin safely not to lose as little time as possible. If this had been in the forefront of his mind he may have instinctively remained further left. Dave has already been penalised for a bad rejoin in the first phase of this incident so he won’t be penalised again.

Lap 4 - Pit Lane - Pepe Higdon
Presumably Pepe has some mechanical damage so he decides he needs a Shift-R. He drives into the pit stalls and and performs a Stop and Go there. However this resets him onto the racing line on the finishing straight.

The correct thing to do would have been to reset out on the circuit and then perform a Stop and Go in the pit stalls. Respawning on the racing line on the finish straight is dangerous. Admittedly a respawn out on the circuit is likely to result in the car being on the racing line but hopefully not somewhere that is likely to be the fastest part of the circuit.

Server replay time: 0h43m55s

Lap 29 – Lesmos 1 – Phil Thornton, Ricardo Valim da Silva, Albert Hallu and David Rainier
Ricardo has lost the rear end on the entry to Lesmos 1, he hits the armco and is spun around and ends up on the racing line but facing the wrong way. He tries to do a 180 in order get the car pointing the right way but he does it just as Phil is approaching. Phil brakes hard but he cannot avoid Ricardo and both cars end up facing the armco barrier. Ricardo reverses just enough to give himself room to manoeuvre the car so that it is facing in the right direction. Phil tries to do the same but reverses too far and makes contact with Albert who has tried to squeeze past the stricken Eagles. John Woods, David Rainier and Dulima have to slow down to avoid the carnage but they do not make contact with any of the stricken cars. David locks up and hits the armco but his car appears undamaged.

Ricardo was stopped on the racing line so he had to move to a safer place as soon as possible. Unfortunately, his choice of manoeuvre placed him directly in the path of the following car. If Ricardo had stayed on the inside and waited for a safe gap, it would have been easier for the following cars to run wide in order to avoid contact. Having to slow down and take a tight line was more difficult. A fine sporting gesture saw Ricardo move over to let Phil take the win but given that the incident has been formally moderated this place is being returned.

Phil could do nothing about the contact with Ricardo. However, having found himself facing the armco he should have reversed the absolute minimum necessary to make the space required to turn the car to face the right direction. He reversed all the way onto the racing line which was the wrong thing to do.

Albert Hallu did nothing wrong.

David Rainier did nothing wrong.

That was a very hard race. Lots of overtaking and mistakes which kept the race interesting until the end. Wasn't sure if Ricardo had an engine problem at the finish but he didn't, he slowed to let me take the win. Presumably because of the bump we had with a couple of laps to go. A very sporting gesture, you are a gentleman.

I qualified 7th and took 6th off the line with a good start. For several laps I held on to the position and put about an eight-second gap between me and Locarno in 7th. I was then in the process of reeling in Curtis and someone else when one of them spun in the Lesmos. That took my Lotus out hard. Limping back to the pit for a reset, I had contact with at least one other car, for which I am sincerely apologetic. Coming out of pit road I'd dropped down to about 15th. Soon I was back in 9th. I was catching Billy and another car but misjudged Billy's brake point at the end of the straight. Rather than hit him, I just put the car into the armco barrier and retired. I now have four DNFs in four starts. Can it get worse? It's GPL, so of course it can get worse.

I haven't watched the replay because frankly I'm not all that fond of war movies.

Really sorry Billy. was a fair way behind you towards the end of lap one approaching the Parabolica,  all of a sudden I was upon you. I didnt think we were near the braking point...  I tried to go up the inside to miss you but I was too close. Making you spin out. My apologies mate.

I am sincerely sorry for causing the accident on the first lap. I thought I had time to get back on the track, but unfortunately that was not the case. To punish myself, I preferred to disconnect. I did not deserve to continue.
decidedly, this is not my year...

I had two accidents during the race. Each time, it was a consequence of a bad rejoin on the track for another driver.

Sorry but I reported these incidents because I think they could have been easily avoidable.

You were quite right to report them David, we need to moderate them and see what lessons can be learnt.

Lap 1 was a disaster for me, wasn't sure about fuel consumption for the Eagle so wanged an extra 5 gals in the tank , took it nice and easy at the start but going into paranoidacer I decided to brake sooner than later to avoid the kitty litter but got a mighty rear ender for my trouble causing me to use my one and only S/R , Climbed back up through the ranks and due to my superior driving skill avoided umpteen crashes and bad re joins to find myself in a comfortable P6 . As the fuel load lightened my rear tyres were getting a little too warm and ended up in the kitty litter after all .
In spite of all I enjoyed the race and after swapping places with Rainier a few times due to his misfortunes it became a battle to the flag with Dave winning by 4/100 sec !

In all the heat I forgot to take the stop and go , "AGAIN"  Roll Eyes ,  mods please note .

I was also a victim of bad rejoins at several places

Sorry Bernie, I'm the one that rear ended you.
I really didn't expect you earlier braking.

My race was really to forget: I was checking Pribluda when I hit the Armco on the right side after the pits, silly me!!

See you on track.

Cheers
