Moderator's Report

Summary
Clive Loynes cruised to what looked like an easy victory, twenty four seconds clear of the field after setting pole position. But that would be misleading, he was hounded in the early laps by Evil Clive and he had to nurse the delicate Lancia motor to bring the car safely home on an unforgiving track. Doni Yourth drove an exceptional race to progress from seventh on the grid to second place. A solid drive from Enrique secured the final podium spot.

Server replay time: 0h02m41s

Lap 1 - Windmill Bend - Petr Romanov and Raoni Frizzo
Raoni is a couple of car lengths behind Enrique Farina as they round the right hander after Riding School with Petr about ten car lengths further back. Enrique makes a mistake and clips the straw bales on the inside of the curve which slows him down. This allows Raoni to close up, but he doesn’t attempt a pass because, although Enrique has lost momentum and speed, this hasn’t presented Raoni with a safe passing opportunity. Petr has not been affected by Enrique’s momentary reduction in speed and he barrels through the right hander unimpaired. As the cars approach Windmill Bend, Enrique has recovered but Raoni has had to wait for the Lancia ahead to pick up speed. This means Raoni is slightly slower than he would normally be. Petr is closing fast (doing 95mph compared to Raoni who is travelling at 77mph) and he must take a tight line and go for the gap on the inside in order to avoid rear ending Raoni. Unfortunately, the gap narrows as they turn in and minor contact is made but it is enough to send Raoni into a spin. Thankfully Raoni was able to recover and continue in the race. Petr is barely affected by the contact and can continue without losing any time.

Raoni did nothing wrong. In fact, his patience and awareness during the rejoin was exemplary. He was very careful not to reverse into the oncoming traffic and only reversed enough to make sufficient space to manoeuvre the car so that it pointed in the right direction.

From the server replay it appears Petr decides to try the overtake on the inside but he quickly realises it isn’t on. He tries to back out but he is committed and cannot slow down enough to avoid hitting Raoni. Petr didn’t quite have 50% overlap at turn-in so the responsibility for the contact must lie with him. At this level clear passing opportunities are few and far between so it is not surprising that Petr was tempted. Given that this incident occurred on the first lap it attracts an extra 1 place penalty.

Season 38 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 4 – Works - Monsanto

This race announcement is for the WORKS.

The fourth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us in Portugal. The street circuit of Monsanto Park to be precise. Built on parkland, the circuit was considered difficult to drive because it crossed so many different types of surfaces, including tramlines at one point. The track hosted numerous races from 1954 to 1959, but only one race qualified as a Formula One event: the 1959 Portuguese Grand Prix, won by Stirling Moss. He won the race in the twilight hours, since the race was purposefully started late in the day to avoid the intense late summer sun.

This circuit is a big challenge.
It's as though each sector has a "bonus" 0.5 seconds hidden in it but when I manage to unlock one of them I can't see what I have done correctly to warrant it!

I've tried practice but all I'm doing is finding new ways to crash.

Think I'll have a nap instead.  Wake me up in about an hour please.

Being very cautious on lap 1, staying behind Farina without trying a risky overtake... and then hit by an "optimistic" Connaught and sent to the back of the field. I felt more like playing an arcade F1 2020 game.
After that, lost my concentration and any patience to do a steady race. Ended in the haybale in the last corner while trying to catch Doni and Farina for 2nd place.

It's getting more and more difficult to find motivation to continue this series. I may give a last shot for the next race to see if I can have a first lap at least without an accident

Grats to Clive, Doni and Enrique, plus all finishers.

Sorry that I did not stick around for more laps, but the combination of sudden drops in FPS ( which screws getting the braking and turn in points right ) and my own lack of concentration on gear shifts etc, both of which caused multiple bounces off the hay bales in the 2 laps that I did run, was just too much to suffer. I was going to cause a major crashfest if I had stuck around, so I quit.
TBH my brain is just not focused when I am racing GPL lately and I am thinking of other things in my world, that perhaps require me to use more of my limited RAM.
I think that I might sit out a few races until I can get my real world sorted, then beat the graphics problems into compliance before I clutter up any more grids.

Hell's teeth, there will only be a couple of us left at this rate!
I could see that you were not on your A Game last night Huh? and hope that you can sort things out swiftly.
You would be much missed.
I'm currently on grandad duty so will hope to have time tonight for a proper report.
There again,PDLR will be running their server for practice at Monsanto tonight from 8:30 UK time, for anyone who wants more torture. You will encounter an alien in a Connaught doing 2:07.6.
It runs at 36fps and there will be three practice sessions, each followed by a practice race.  It's always good to have as much time on-line with other cars and that is particularly true of the 55mod.

Raoni's accident is unfortunate, and that makes me feel bad, the LPG has these mishaps dear frizzo, do not be discouraged, we are tied in the general table and I am going to fight to the death .... with you ..... Grin
On the other hand, my career was very good, I was focused all the time and I only made a small mistake, which Don took overtake me  of, to steal my position 2 from there onwards it was a hunt, to see if I could regain that position, but Doni could not made no slight mistake and with 2 laps to go, I decided to release the accelerator a bit, and secure my podium, in 3rd place, anyway, phill recovered very well and came like crazy, but he lacked time, great race of recovery Phill, Doni you were also magnificent and without counting untiring clive, congratulations guys, you made me have a very pleasant time.

Clive was irresistible !!! Congratulations for the victory. alien
........my score of 5 was something regular for my Gordini.

I think the highlight of the race was a climb by Doni, he was very late on lap 1 and finished on the 2nd !!!Bravo!!! thumbup1
But I am concerned about the number of the gride, would it be productive to make a call beforehand and if possible together the two grids?

Agreed. It is normal for drivers to drop out during the season for various reasons. So as the numbers drop there will come a point where running 1 server would be better. We can decide together when combining the grids would be best. We have used the same rules (i.e. Pro damage) so combining the grids will not change the rules. We can keep the 2 championship tables "Works" and "Privateers" with a single server.

We had 11 + 11 drivers for this round, so we are not yet down to the numbers where everyone could be accommodated on one server.

After Jonny's win last season I had intended to use the Merc for this race but I found in my practice sessions that I was faster in the Lancia.  I'm sure that the Merc is quicker but I just can't do it.

Evil pushed me hard in qually with a late effort.  I had switched to race fuel running by then but when I followed him on track near the end of the session he binned it at the top of the long climb.  He was obviously having problems.
I got the better start but he was able to draft past up the long hill and I didn't do much to resist.  I was on his tail as we started lap two and only had to pull out of the slipstream and say "boo" to send him off into the bales.

I was surprised that he recovered so quickly but he was at a safe distance away.  Then he was gone and I had a series of people to watch out for in second spot.  Doni appeared after a few laps and I was able to slowly pull a gap whilst also keeping the engine revs down.

I have found the Lancia engine to be fragile and so I was really glad to see the chequered flag.  I find not driving flat out to be very difficult, as these cars often need a exuberant use of the throttle to make them steer properly and this did take me close to the straw bales on on occasion.

See you in a couple of weeks.

Well done to Doni and Enrique and all finishers.

Grats to Clive on a fine win.  A walkaway, in fact.  Ricky a good P3 which so easily could have been P2 if not for a slight brush of a haybale.  A most satisfactory result for me to score a P2.

As ever, I drive the GP55's with the greatest of care and respect realizing that, back in the day, even a minor shunt with these brutes could prove career-ending.  Zero protection for the driver.

In the early laps, I just concentrated on hitting my marks and gained places thanks to the misfortunes of others.  A collision between Ray and Petr handed me two spots on the very first lap.  Evil suffered a grim fate by getting trapped behind some trackside geometry that wouldn't let him rejoin.  Grim.  A few seconds behind Ricky in P3 and quite satisfied with that til he scuffed a haybale and it bled off all his speed.  I only just managed to squeeze by for the place.  I mean, it's the old story.  'I'd rather be lucky than good any day.'

Kudos to Phil for scoring the FTD and P4.  Well done.

Jonny making the best of the situation in the Gordini to score valuable points in P5.

Condolences to Fulvio who gamely struggled on with a severely damaged car to score points.

I'm quite genuinely upset to learn that Evil is out of sorts.  By all means, take a break and come back stronger than ever, champ.
