Moderator's Report

Both drivers in this incident have proven themselves to be responsible and fair drivers in the past and it was unfortunate for both of them that a small contact ( at high speed ) ended both of their races.
Enrique has been chasing Philippe for several laps and slowly closing in, but the straight line speed of Philippe's Eagle keeps him ahead. At the end of lap 15 Enrique gets a much better drive through Parabolica and exits the corner firmly in the Eagle's slipstream.
On the approach to Curve Grande Philippe is showing 192mph (309kph) and Enrique has reached the same speed with the tow ( previous lap he was at 188mph (302kph).
Enrique sees the opportunity to take the inside line and moves out of the slipstream as they enter the braking zone. Both cars brake at almost the identical moment, but because Enrique is 1.5 car lengths further back, he is able to be less aggressive on the brakes and his momentum brings him almost alongside Philippe as they both prepare to enter the corner.
Enrique's move out of the slipstream and down the inside is clearly visible in Philippe's mirrors, but the Brabham does move into the Philippe's blind spot.
Enrique can clearly see the Eagle and the inviting gap down the inside to the apex of Curve Grande.
Enrique naturally wants to give himself as wide a line as possible into Curve Grande and Philippe is fully committed to his normal racing line ( travelling at the same speed as previous laps ). The cars touch and Philippe is thrown into the barriers ending his race, Enrique finishes the lap but retires to the pits.

Close inspection of the server replay shows that Philippe took his normal speed and line into the corner and stays to his side of the central line. Enrique was travelling slightly faster than usual due to the slipstream and on a slightly tighter line, but there were no indications that he was travelling too fast to safely negotiate Curve Grande.

Philippe did not adjust his line to leave extra room for the Brabham which he knew was on his inside, but he was still within his 50% of the track width at the moment of contact.
When Enrique committed to his overtaking move the Eagle was travelling in a straight line and he left less than a 1 metre gap between the cars. But, he should have made sure that he was within his 50% of the track width.
At the moment of contact Enrique had not achieved a clear 100% overlap and his car was not visible in Philippe's mirror.
This incident could have been avoided if ...
a) Philippe had made an allowance for the car that had moved into his blind spot and was making an overtaking move, but he was quite entitled to maintain his line and speed on his side of the track
b) Enrique had moved more to his right and kept his car well within his side of the track which would have left more space between the cars.
It is quite common for 2 cars to negotiate Curve Grande side by side if the drivers are careful.

UKGPL rules make it clear that it is the responsibility of the OVERTAKING car to ensure a safe and clean pass and that the right to the racing line through the corner can only be claimed when a clear 100% overlap has been achieved.

Therefore in this case a penalty of 1 place is given to Enrique.

It was regrettable that comments were exchanged on the forum immediately after the incident when emotions are high. The court system exists to deal with incidents such as this and avoid heated arguments. We all race GPL for fun and we all understand how frustrating it is to not finish a race for whatever reason. Philippe has always driven fairly and with consideration and I hope that Enrique re-considers his decision to quit all UKGPL races ( except the 1955 series) as he has shown himself to be a gentleman driver.

Of course - except my mechanics have given them a new paint job so the Honda looks more like an Eagle & the BRM very closely resembles to Cooper.

Well I was -50 once, but I have not raced GPL in 6 years with only a handful of rf2 races one year ago between that. But absent a "RUSTY" class, I guess I'm WORKS lol. I'm only in it for the GPL miles and the chequered thing at the end anyways, any of the Magnificent Seven will do Wink.

Love your GP format, looking forward to racing with you guys !
