Season 38 – 1967 F1 PRIVATEERS – Round 7 – Hockenheim

The 7th round in the 1967 F1 series finds us at Hockenheim in Germany. The track was originally called "Dreieckskurs" (triangle course) and was built in 1932 using roads in the forest as an alternative to the Wildpark-Circuit in Karlsruhe. The track was used for motorcycle racing and was expanded to be used as test track for Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union in 1936. In 1938 the track was drastically shortened to 7.5 kilometres and it was renamed the "Kurpfalzring". This name was used until 1947 when the unchanged layout was renamed again to "Hockenheimring". This version of the circuit, which was used in 1955, consisted of the original two long straights, with the Ostkurve in the forest and the original hairpin inside Hockenheim joining them together. In 1965, when the new Autobahn A 6 separated the village from the main part of the track, an updated version of Hockenheim circuit was built, which incorporated a new "Motodrom" stadium section. Two fast chicanes were added after Jim Clark was killed on 7 April 1968 in a Formula 2 racing accident.  A small memorial was placed at the site of his accident near the first chicane. In order to improve safety even further, the track was lined with crash barriers in 1970. But the track was still dangerous and claimed the life of Patrick Depailler in 1980. So in 1982, the first chicane was made slower and a third chicane was added at the Ostkurve (east curve). In the early 2000s, Formula 1 officials demanded the 6.823 km (4.240 mi) track be shortened and threatened to discontinue racing there.  So the state government of Baden-Württemberg secured the financing for a redesign by Hermann Tilke ready for the 2002 German Grand Prix. The new "Tilke Track" was not universally popular and many drivers preferred the long circuit. Sadly the old circuit was torn up and replanted with trees thereby preventing any chance of reinstating the long circuit for Formula 1 or indeed using it for historic car races.

Tonight we will be using the 1967 version of the long track that doesn't have the three chicanes.

That was shaping up to be an epic race until Ricardo and Dulima discoed in the stadium section. I doubt I would have had the speed to pass Ricardo's Eagle, it was very fast. I swapped placed with Dulima a couple of times so I know I could have passed another Lotus but the Eagle was another matter. It was a 4 car train for the first couple of laps with Philippe also joining in the fun. After we lost Ricardo and Dulima, I found myself with a 3 second lead over Philippe. We never got much closer but I wouldn't say the race was boring. I had to drive flat out to stay far enough ahead to deny Philippe a slipstream. Thankfully I did but it was very close, one small mistake and Philippe would have been all over me. Great racing Philippe. Commiserations to Ricardo and Dulima.

Was a great race for me very enjoyable. Took the Eagle and it seemed fine. Unable to get the extra few MPH that others seemed to have but had a little extra speed over the Ferrari and Loti.

Had some good fun with Eric and with David. Qualified a little further up the grid than usual so was happy with that. And a new PB again.

Just missed a car cutting across from the outside to the inside on T1 other than that a great race.

Could have done better without a spin at half way. And then my rear tyres I think were a bit hot towards the end as the back end became a bit playful

Good fun and very gentlemanly driving and racing

Thanks mods.

One thing about this series is it forces you to drive all variety of chassis three of which I am familiar with (Lotus , Coop, Brabby ) and four I am unfamiliar with ( Eagle , BRM, Honda, Ferrari )  This time I chose the Honda on the assumption that it would be pretty quick at a track like Hockenhiem with just two long straights connected by a fast bend at one end and a twiddly bit at the other . What I didnt know was how much fuel for 25 laps so I fueled for 32 just to be safe , The extra weight added to an already overweight car left me struggling through the stadium and exit speed onto the straights , that together with the higher gear ratios I chose to use for the race mindful of over revs in the anticipated slipstream . In reality I lost any tow early on in the race and ended up driving a Jap Barge ! In the end I was glad to finish and most of all avoid being lapped .

Grats to the pods etc. etc.

the races follow one another but are not the same.  Tongue

I don't like this track, I never managed to find the ideal setup.

Yesterday, it was my friend Phil the fastest, ...next time, maybe not!   Grin Grin Grin

I had a great evening with you, congratulations to Phil and David.  Smiley

Thanks to the lapped drivers, it's not easy.

Thanks to the organizers.  Wink Wink

Unfortunately in the 3 of Brazil (me Ricardo Silva, Du Lima and Albert) we were disconnected from the server. In the Parana race the same thing happened, I was leading and I was disconnected. Montijuick Du Lima was also disconnected. I don't want to be fighting or arguing for the championship , I just want to have fun, now in a matter of winning a race or another is a consequence. What the GPL gives us is that fun. But that's just my opinion. Congratulations to everyone who managed to finish the race. See you next time, and I hope you won't be disconnected again, a big hug to everyone.
