Season 38 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 7 – Works - Watkins Glen

This race announcement is for the WORKS.

The seventh race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Watkins Glen in the USA. Watkins Glen International ("The Glen") is an auto race track located near Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. It was long known around the world as the home of the United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for 20 consecutive years (1961–1980). In the early years races passed through the heart of the town with spectators lining the sidewalks, but after a car left the road in a 1952 race, killing one spectator and injuring several others, the race was moved to a new location on a wooded hilltop southwest of town. Later a permanent race course was constructed on 550 acres, overlapping part of the previous course. Despite improvements, the circuit became unable to safely handle the increasingly faster and stiffer ground effect cars of the late 70s and a few horrendous, sometimes fatal accidents and increasingly rowdy segments of the crowd began to tarnish its image. Finally, in May, 1981, several months after Alan Jones had won the 1980 race for Williams, the International Auto Sports Federation removed the race from its schedule because the track had failed to pay its debts to the teams

Sorry Doni, but the absolute loss of brakes reminded me why I do not like this mod -> tow + no brakes = acceleration!

Did not want to pass!!!

That was quite an enjoyable race. I qualified last but the benefit was I had the perfect vantage point to watch the 10 car train negotiate the first few laps. It was a pleasure to see everyone driving considerately and jockeying for position without taking unnecessary risks. I was ready to pick up places whenever anyone made a mistake ahead. I appreciate the brakes are bad, but I like the way the race unfolds gently. It is easy to anticipate what is going to happen ahead, but considerable restraint and patience is required to wait for the right opening. After a minor incident at the 90, I found myself trying to hunt down Enrique and fend off Doni. Needless to say Doni caught me before I could catch Enrique (in fact I never did). Doni passed me and we had a few very hard fought laps but I couldn't retake the position, great racing Doni.

Too bad Clive, I was enjoying our cautious battle and I was ready to let you first time you had showed beside me.
In the end I was happily surprised from my consistent drive and Ferrari engine's strenght that keep at bay Enrique when he tried to catch me.  Smiley

I arrived with very little practice since I had a lot of work in the week and did not have time, in which I went in all the laps in a loop, only at the end at the last opportunity, I was able to do some time and start 7.
in race I committed a single error and I surpassed myself to the medical car, I started to drive more concentrated, small errors that did not let me get a little closer to fulvio, but I was very happy with my 4th place, I drove in the prebluda to phill who was approaching and moving away, and that's how it was the whole race, a mistake of mine and they both surpassed me, I just dedicated myself to maintaining my position since the 3 up front were very far away.
Congratulations to the Brazilians, total dominance of the first 2 steps of the podium, and to Policardi, with an excellent 3rd place, nice race, I had a lot of fun, thank you guys

Congratulations to Ray on the victory!  Well done to Jonny for making it close.  (Must check my replay cap to watch the fun up front)  Great job by Fulvio to nail down P3.

As has happened so many times in S37 and S38, I was again crossed swords with Phil.  We both got set back when Axel suffered brake maladies in The 90 but thereafter, it was game of catch-up for me and it took forever to close on Phil.  I honestly wasn't sure that I had the pace but in the closing stages, I managed a pass...Phil offered up no resistance by not blocking; this is Formula One after all, not Formula 3...and I ran the snot out of the Maser to stay ahead.  It took laps well inside my personal bests to keep his Connie in my mirrors.  Only just managed to prevail.  Great job there, PT!

Another missed ( screwed up ) downshift and another early exit at The Loop, life for me in GPL is getting a little repetitive  Undecided

I pushed very hard to stay ahead but when it was obvious that you had the pace to pass me I figured there was no point resisting and the better strategy was to sit on your tail and try to get you to drag us both up to Enrique. It nearly worked too, but with a couple of laps to go it looked like Enrique was safe so I decided it was time to try to retake the position. This plan didn't work either because you were too fast  scooter ! I tried hard but I couldn't engineer a decent opportunity. I'll get you next time  Wink Great driving Doni, you didn't buckle under the pressure.

The H-Shifter is unforgiving, particularly in the 55s where engine braking is essential. Crashing out because of one missed downshift is hard to take. But keep working at it Clive, I still make those errors but less and less frequently. but when everything comes together the champagne tastes much sweeter  Wink

Strangely enough, for me, it's the opposite.
At gplracer, I drive with the paddles, and I have an 80% engine breakage rate!
Just look at my rating in mod 65 at gpl racer. I never break an engine in mod 65 at ukgpl.

so yes, phil is right, you have to get used to the changes.
I have to get used to driving with the paddles at gpl racer. I can't use the shifter, because of a weird regulation

It was a deep disappointment for me this race, not because of the result, but because of my mental confusion !!! I don't know where I understood that the track would be Glen 48 !!!! by god !!!! what a wonderful track for a mod55 race ...... but when i got to the server and saw that there was a stupid error on my part! My world has fallen!

....please guys, for a future season reflect on Glen 48.

Returning to the real world, I chose Maserati, which is the easiest car in the mod55, the easiest in the corners and within which I made some risky bets in the setup and it gave a good result, I could rotate 1.17 high, for the entire race , this was good for following Raoni.
Until some time it worked, Raoni made a mistake and I was able to lead for most of the race, but Raoni was faster and at the end of the race he came very close and when I left the last corner I made the only mistake of my race, it was fatal, Raoni passed and he didn't give me any more chances.
I have made 100% submissions in mod55, I believe that this is due to the smooth riding that the mod55 requires, you need to reach the 10 laps of a race to understand your pace, so this mod requires care and to hold the aggressiveness in the beginning. With modSC you can miss a curve entry because you have enough grip to correct, but mod55 does not, you need to be smooth.

Special reminder for Farina and Doni's recovery, seeing the replay of Doni's maserati must have a more reinforced firing squad, the accident was strong and ended up at the end of the yard !!!
