Season 38 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 7 – Privateers - Watkins Glen

This race announcement is for the PRIVATEERS.

The seventh race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Watkins Glen in the USA. Watkins Glen International ("The Glen") is an auto race track located near Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. It was long known around the world as the home of the United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for 20 consecutive years (1961–1980). In the early years races passed through the heart of the town with spectators lining the sidewalks, but after a car left the road in a 1952 race, killing one spectator and injuring several others, the race was moved to a new location on a wooded hilltop southwest of town. Later a permanent race course was constructed on 550 acres, overlapping part of the previous course. Despite improvements, the circuit became unable to safely handle the increasingly faster and stiffer ground effect cars of the late 70s and a few horrendous, sometimes fatal accidents and increasingly rowdy segments of the crowd began to tarnish its image. Finally, in May, 1981, several months after Alan Jones had won the 1980 race for Williams, the International Auto Sports Federation removed the race from its schedule because the track had failed to pay its debts to the teams

That was more fun than expected.
It took me until about 10 laps to the end to finally not run too wide at the last corner; I had been struggling there most laps but I still don't think I nailed it once.

Congrats up front.

Unlucky on the last lap Bernie. I think you need to submit a bad rejoin report for the curbing/straw bales;  they both clearly pulled out right in front of you!

Prior to that, you were edging away about 1/10 of a second at a time. I then managed to pop in a few personal best laps & get much closer.  I doubted I'd be able to catch/get past, but was willing to give it a go, just in case.

Don't know where that FL came from at the end;  but was Bernie-inspired!
However over at Pros - 1:16.9 &  low 1:17.x ?  Shocked

Cheers all,
Dave.

Yup P3 thrown away on the last lap ! I was having to drive 10/10 ths to keep Dave off my exhaust , the last thing I wanted was his Lancia drafting by on the straight , In a mighty effort to keep you at bay  I apexed to soon at the esses  drifted into the bales and got propelled into the barrier , race over !
Qually went well P3 on the grid and got a good start , but then Fran decided to try a demon overtake at the end of the straight slid wide and took us both off ( Not very pleased with that ) however the tables where turned on around lap 22 when I went down the inside of Fran going into Big Bend where I slid wide and took him out ( unintentional of course and I did have the corner ) .
All in all a great fun race , In spite of the mishaps I was glad to finish and beaten fair and square in the true "Jack Brabham"  tradition .

Grats to the Podium  see you all soon at Hockenheim  Grin

At the first overtake i was conviced that you had led the way, there was all free in front of me.
The second,at the Big Band, was a demon overtake. You have touched the grass and lost the car.without finding my car I don't know how it would have ended for you.Anyway my compliment for the comeback in my tail.

A good ride for me at Watkins Glen,  started from pole i had to fight hard Leo in the first couple of laps to keep him behind my tail suffering for a long 5th Gear. After 5 or 6 laps i gained a safe margin but my brakes were constantly on red. After leo's retirement i only had to manage the gap and the engine.
A good relief for me After last race in bremgarten angel

See you in hocheneim!

A really decent race for me. Started at the back which suited me fine. Had a bette qualifying time than I expected.

The grid only had a few seconds between pole and the back of the grid. Got a decent start and stayed with the pack for all the race. Had some really good racing and lots of fun. All very clean and gentlemanly... settled down and due to a few errors on the part of others moved up to 4th at one point and holding my own for a change. Felt I was finally on for a decent placed finish.. but one slide up through the Essex and a tap of the armco spun me across the track where I lost a wheel. Shame, because it was all going very well considering it was in the 55s.

Congrats to all. Great racing. Thanks.
