Season 38 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 7 –  Oulton Park

For this round, the MOW entrants will drive the 1966 cars at Oulton Park, situated in the north west of England around 30 miles from Liverpool and Manchester. This track has never hosted a championship F1 race, but hosted non-championship F1 races most years from the mid-1950s until the early 1970s

The Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2), 1968 and 1969. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group and keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Groups 7, 8 or 9.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Full Driver lists and divisional rules including manufacturer groups can be found here Championship Standings page

AnGex   -    Works    -    Matra (Group 5)7

Why is that? Which Matra could that be for 66?

Phew.. that was exhausting and exciting.  strange thing early on in race.  screen flickered/flashed and i couldnt control the car correctly. I slid off and ended up behind the fence. No damage but even after driving for a fair while still unable to rejoin. took a reset and straight into the pits for a stop n go.

very nearly decided to throw in the towel at that point as the thought of running around at the back wasnt too appealing.. but got back on track and settled into a nice rythm. I really like this track.
in the end I did meet up with a few guys and had some good laps and some excellent racing.  I had a couple of small incidents, a slide off track when Leo was very close and I tried to allow him some room, but overdid it to my detriment and ended up on the grass verge.

another boo boo was when I thought i was going to be overtaken by Tris.. I thought this because its happened many times to me in the past LOL.  So i did the decent thing and moved over to let him past, imagine my suprise to see Dave C go by like a rocket !!  .  Cheesy

other one was another trip along the grass verge but although I thought I had plenty of time to rejoin, it seems even slower going than usual at Oulton on the grass. a bit sticky !  and rejoin in front of Pete . Pete had to take to the grass to miss me. Sorry mate.  Embarrassed

Hope it all went OK for everyone else.  Thanks All..

I have some empathy with Evil tonight. I was in a competitive third place when I messed up a down shift into Island Bend. I ran wide and was passed by 4 or 5 drivers. I recovered and tried to catch Pete who was inching away from me, but I tried too hard and put a wheel on the grass at Island (again!) which meant I couldn't brake for Esso and I gently rolled over the edge and into the lake. I couldn't get any traction and I ended up floating around in the water. The car wouldn't stop so I couldn't reset! Eventually I floated off into the middle of the lake where I hit the end of the world where there was a huge explosion and I was able to reset. By this time I was practically a lap down and after my stop and go, the leader Tris was only 400 yards behind me. I pressed on in the hope that I might be able to pick up some points. The lap times were very close so I wasn't going to make up much ground. I nearly binned it on the last lap when a second (yes I only made 2 in the whole race but the consequences are catastrophic) bad downshift at Druids found me bouncing on the grass and nearly hitting the wall  Roll Eyes

It looks like Leo missed the start and had to start from the pit lane. So his first lap wasn't counted by GPL. I've corrected that, he completed 29 laps not 28. So that bumps him up to 6th behind Bastian. Unlucky Leo, you had tremendous pace; you would have been challenging for a win. If you keep this up you'll be in the Works category next season!

How do you even do that?  I didn't know it was possible in GPL.

Anyway, thanks all for a fun race. I made the usual couple of mistakes by trying my tyres on the green stuff which allowed Phil's Honda to get the better of me in the opening laps. The first couple of laps were fast and furious. I soon got into a comfortable rhythm which this track seems to lend itself to, a lovely flowing circuit even though I do seem to take a different line through T1 each time around. Paul, no worries about your waltzing Ferrari. It did take me by surprise though. I took a quick detour through the trees but managed to survive without any damage or the need for a Shift-R. It did put Evil about 40 yards behind and we then had a great scrap for about 6 laps - a lot of fun, great racing. Phil - sorry to read about your aquatics. See you all next time.

Speed was good here, but far too many mistake. In the end the gap to second place melted, but at least 5th,
with Luck because i risked too much on the last lap, not seeing leo on the pribluda due to the issue.

Missed the starting grid, home stuff  oops

Then, trying to make up ground for starting last, a missed a downshift for the Cascades corner and a few bumps and bruises when passing slowwer cars didn't help.

See you next round.

It looks like Leo missed the start and had to start from the pit lane.

How do you even do that?  I didn't know it was possible in GPL.

When the qually ends there is a 30 second countdown to allow the drivers to click on the green button and join the grid. If you miss that (as I have done a couple of times when I've gone for a comfort break before the race  wheelchair ) the green button disappears but it is enabled again about 30 seconds after the start. Anybody clicking on the green button at this point will start from the pit lane.

It is the position of the stalls with respect to the finish line that determines whether or not the first lap is counted. At Monza the stalls are all behind the finish line so the first lap will be counted by GPL. However at Silverstone, all the stalls are in front of the finish line (which is on the exit of Woodcote) so the first lap is not counted by GPL.
