Season 38 1965F1 – Round 8 – Amateurs - Enna

We return to Europe for Round 8, to Sicily in Italy to be precise. The Autodromo di Pergusa circuit encircles Pergusa Lake, the only natural lake in Sicily. The circuit is also known as Enna-Pergusa, as the lake is located near the city of Enna. During the 1960s, the track hosted various sportscar events such as the Coppa Città di Enna and later in the 1970s the Coppa Florio. It also played host to a non-championship Formula One event known as the Mediterranean Grand Prix. The Formula 1 race was held 4 times between 1962 and 1965, it was won twice by Jo Siffert and once each by Lorenzo Bandini and John Surtees.

I think that we'll all be keeping our fingers crossed for this one. No mass-disco at the end of qualifying.

See you later.

Tagged by a car coming off the banking & ended in the lake. Clipped the Armco going into the pits which would have meant a second reset. Apart from that it was going quite nicely.
Not my best season. Good to see no discos.

Thanks for giving me room towards the end of the race Phillipe, the bunch was coming down on me fast.

I stayed as tight to my line as possible and was going as fast as I could. I hope I didnt cause too much trouble so close to the end.

all in all good, just to get a finish without any Disco issues, even managed to finish without being lapped.. but it was close.

judging by what i could see on Pribluda there was some very close racing going on.

thanks guys, congrats to all finishers and Mods.

Yes great connections, I could run close with other cars all race with no worries about warp contact. I wish it was like that for every race!

Sorry about the contact on Lap 2 Eric. I'm pretty sure I'd have recovered from the slide but in doing so I got in your way. Thankfully it didn't spoil our race too much.

Having made a mistake on Lap 2 I had dropped to the back and I had to drive very hard to get back on terms. I had a titanic battle with David in another Honda. Equal machinery and a slip stream meant neither of us could break away from the other and we swapped places countless times. We were joined by Eric for a few laps which was very hectic until he crashed at Zagaria (I think). The last 3 laps were cat and mouse, we were both trying to work out the best strategy. David was positioned perfectly for Curva del Cancello on the last lap so I had to try the outside line which I didn't manage to pull off and David beat me to the line. Text book racing, very hard but very fair. Thanks for the fun David.

Car seemed to handle strange , when I looked someone had spilt strawberry jam all over the rears causing a few handling probs ( 2 pirouettes  and a triple salko ) no resets needed just a push start from each spin once the dust had settled  .
I think I had set the tyre pressures a bit too high in the interest of top speed  Undecided

Enjoyed the track and a bit of dicing , though I found it difficult to tell 1 corner from the next as they all looked the same to my eyes

Grats to the podiums boys / girls whichever you prefare  Roll Eyes

For what appears to be a otherwise boring track; that was exciting throughout.
Seemed to be more of a case of a race against myself/being consistent than worrying about anyone else.

Also, getting a good tow & not losing it!
To that end, I was happy trying to hang onto whoever was in front.  DR did the honours to start with, then later on I was somehow creeeeping oh-so-slowly to Pete, who then showed me around.
Meanwhile, Philippe was catching catching catching. Pete - I was willing you on with more speed, but I couldn't help.  Without the tow, I would have bogged down so would have slowed us both down.

Thanks again for the monster tow you two!

Congrats Philippe & unkucky at the end Pete, but you have enough points at the moment so was only too willing to pick up a lucky (for me) 2nd.

True, but I think a couple of them have different stuff on the inside which sometimes decides to jump out & grab a wheel...

Cheers all, good that there was not a repeat of the monster-disco.

Cheers,
Dave.

Wow! What a fun race.  Grin

I have now driven all seven cars in this championship, so for the remaining three races, the choice is being made by the home flag. That meant the Ferrari for Enna. I was surprised (but pleased) to get it onto the front row in qualifying as the Lotus cars have a lot more straight line speed. I just managed to get pole by a few hundredths after some lucky tow out of the last bend. Thank you to whoever it was who gave me the extra speed.

First couple of laps were fun with Philippe and Eric chasing hard but it looked as though something happened in my mirrors and they dropped back. The tow here is such a major factor, the difficulty is being able to use it without spinning out once you've made the move. The next twenty laps were quite lonely up-front with a gap never bigger than 200 yards. I missed a gear a couple of times and that made such a difference on this track where so much of it is full throttle. The Ferrari was fiind it hard to punch a hoe in the air. It was only a matter of time before the two Lotus cars caught up and the last 10 laps or so were FANTASTIC fun. Thanks to Phillipe and Dave for such great close racing. The server was rock-solid so we really were bumper to bumper without any fear of a warp. Some great driving going side by side.

The last lap was going to be fun - I was in 2nd place behind Phillipe and then on the last bend we caught up with a back-marker (Paul, I think). Phillipe slowed down and I thought I had my moment as I had the momentum to try a risky manouvre to get better speed as we raced towards the line. It was always going to be a do-or-die thing to try. Unfortunately for me... I died. Span off and had to settle for third place. No worries though - my own fault for taking such a risk. I'm just glad that I didn't take anyone with me. Dave, that must have made your heart pound a bit there. You totally deserved the extra points anyway as you had been chasing me down hard all evening.

How do you guys work out how much fuel to start with? I put in enough for 42 laps, just to be on the safe side, but still had enough for 10 more at the end of the race.  Roll Eyes

This certainly goes down as one of the best races of the season in terms of close racing. Super fun. GPL at its best. Thanks one and all. See you in the Honda at Funabashi.

Thanks Phil - I usually spend a couple of sessions preparing for races. (Just one for this track). You think that would allow for 2 minutes to read the rules!
Reason for my DNF - good old fashioned stupidity.

Only happiness yesterday, suspense until the end.

well, I miss my start, as usual!

I manage to take the lead after a few laps. I take advantage of the caution of the cars in front of me.
but the next lap, I spin, (cold tires no doubt), and there, I understood why the opponents were careful !  Grin

this will be the only mistake during the whole race, which allowed me to get back on Dave and Pete very calmly.

when i was behind you, dave, i was waiting for you to pass pete, you seemed to be faster in the first part, especially with the lotus. But you didn't.
after I got back in the lead, I had a hard time containing your comeback on me.
On the last corner, I was very scared, because I couldn't pass paul properly.

In the end, i won by a small margin.
It was a beautiful evening, a beautiful race, as one rarely experiences. I will remember it for a long time.

Bravo Pete and Dave, thanks tu you  angel
