Moderator's Report

Summary
A victory for Ricardo Valim da Silva over the pole sitter Leo Menegucci. David Rainier secured the final step on the podium, banking some very valuable championship points.

Server replay time: 0h09m13s

Lap 4 – Turn 3 (entry to Stadium Section) – Francesco Molteni and Luiz Covisi
Francesco is leading on the long run back towards the stadium section but Liuz uses the strong draft in the 55 mod to slingshot past as they approach the braking zone for the sharp right hander. Having barely cleared Francesco’s Mercedes, Luiz moves across and brakes heavily in front of Francesco. Contact is made and both cars crash out of the race.

Francesco did nothing wrong.

Luiz managed to overtake Francesco but he cut back in far too early, especially for these cars. Francesco had no chance to take avoiding action and contact was inevitable. Luiz should have stayed on the left-hand side of the track (which is the racing line anyway). Any attempt to move across and take a defensive inside line into the stadium section should have been completed well before the braking zone.

Note: When reviewing the replay there appears to be no contact between the cars but this is misleading. GPL does not use the actual outline of the cars to measure contact. The measurement is made by using a virtual rectangular “crash box” around the car. The rectangular crash box is large enough to cover the entire car, consequently the corners of the crash box extend well beyond the wheels and nose of the car. In this case it was the front left corner of Francesco’s crash box and the right rear corner of Luiz’s crash box that overlapped, thereby simulating the contact.

Season 38 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 8 – Privateers - Hockenheim

This race announcement is for the PRIVATEERS.

The eighth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Hockenheim in Germany. In 1965, when the new Autobahn A 6 separated the village from the main part of the track, an updated version of Hockenheim circuit was built, which incorporated a new "Motodrom" stadium section. Two fast chicanes were added after Jim Clark was killed on 7 April 1968 in a Formula 2 racing accident.  A small memorial was placed at the site of his accident near the first chicane. In order to improve safety even further, the track was lined with crash barriers in 1970. But the track was still dangerous and claimed the life of Patrick Depailler in 1980. So in 1982, the first chicane was made slower and a third chicane was added at the Ostkurve (east curve). In the early 2000s, Formula 1 officials demanded the 6.823 km (4.240 mi) track be shortened and threatened to discontinue racing there.  So the state government of Baden-Württemberg secured the financing for a redesign by Hermann Tilke ready for the 2002 German Grand Prix. The new "Tilke Track" was not universally popular and many drivers preferred the long circuit. Sadly the old circuit was torn up and replanted with trees thereby preventing any chance of reinstating the long circuit for Formula 1 or indeed using it for historic car races.

Tonight we will be using the 1967 version of the long track that doesn't have the three chicanes.

Shouldn't Christian Dauger be on that list?

Well, apologies for that. I think I was about to bump into someone (from previous comment, PV maybe?) & GPL crashed to desktop.
Apologies for any resulting carnage.

Well, very happy with this first race in 55. Smiley
I certainly had a little help with a few outings and / or retirements Wink but the race was intense with Darwins (Lancia), (Sorry for the name, as the nickname is different on the list of participants) during several laps , we passed each other several times, rolled side by side and even got off the track together, all with Albert Hallu in ambush ready to overtake us at every mistake.
One outing too many will prevent me from fighting until the end with the Lancia.

Well done Christian , great result for your first 55 race , enjoyed our racing , things got a bit lonely after you left the track . best Privs result for the Soggies this season ( if it stands ) I collected someone going into the stadium , whoever it was you spun right in front of me , I couldnt avoid the collision .

The question is will this be another re run due to mass disco Huh

A good race trown away for a mistake. It was a tough qualy time and i wasn't so fast. For the race the car was really long geared as i was afraid to cook the engine and as a result everyone could have passed me without problem. At the end of lap 4 i was first thanks to Luiz  i think, that crashesd with nearly half the grid.
I spun at nordkurve and both Ricardo and Leo passed me. Leo's Lancia was a monster in the straight, i was better in the motodrome and during corner exit but even in the slipstream i coudn't pass him. A really enjoiable battle with Ricardo and Leo, clean and fair, thanks you guys i had a  very good time battling with you . Unfortunately entering in the motodrome i missed the braking point for a cent, i locked the front andbwent right in the grass to avoid Ricardo, but i spun and the warp effect has done the rest. At least i haven't ruined the race to Leo and ricardo but i lost a wheel so race over for me.7th and some points but really a bad weekend in Hocheneim. Congrats to podium, see you in Dundrod  Grin

Hi Bernie.  My sincerest apologies for reversing into you old chap.

First off Dave apologised as he thought it may have been him.

I had slowed a fair bit early because I'm aware of the excess speed we all tend to carry on these fast tracks. Worse still if in the 55s with their terrible brakes, and still cold tyres. It was actually a prudent thing to do as it allowed me room to miss the chaos that erupted just in front of me.. I had turned into the corner when Bang... sadly a rear ending.. oops. Game over. But if I had caused you any problems I'm really sorry.

Just another racing incident I think. I'm improving all the time in the 55s but I'm hardly Sterling Moss material yet. I'm not to worried about the next few races as I won't be at Dundrod because I don't even know my way around the place, and Le Man's is another place I don't enjoy. Everyone always seems so much faster than me and its just boring waiting to get lapped..LOL.

Strangely enough - I downloaded IOM last night, as I didn't have a Sunday drive.

Sure, I've seen some brief onboard camera stuff from bikes (terrifying!)  but even at my slow pace in a P330 that was bad enough.  Can see that a 1955 car round there would be something else!  (I'm sure the Clives would relish that though...)

Hmmm ! Come to think of it I thought I saw someone shove a hockey stick  through your front spokes but i didn't believe anyone could be so devious .  So it was Dave after all  Grin

TBH I thought you were doing very well at Hocky , better than I was anyway . Don't forget , mobile chicanes make driving less boring for everyone else ,  that's one good reason to keep on trying so please do not give up , every dog has his day ( or so they tell me )  Roll Eyes

To be honest Bernie, whoever hit me did it from behind. So I'm with you on this one. It must have been Dave.

As for me giving up.. no chance mate. I'm enjoying GPL so much these days. I'm glad I made a return to the fold.

Anyway, don't see I should let you have it all your own way at the back of the grid mate.
