Season 38 – 1967 Grand Prix – Round 8 – Albi

The eighth race in the 1967 Grand Prix series finds us in South West of France. Racing first started on the Circuit des Planques in 1933, the pits and startline being on a short straight before the road twisted down into St.Antoine. At St.Juery the cars had to contend with an extreme hairpin bend, followed by a railway level crossing. The 5.531 mile circuit was shortened in 1951 to 1.859 miles, before being closed in 1955 following the Le Mans disaster. Racing resumed at the nearby Aerodrome in 1959 which is the circuit we now know as Albi. The Chicane du Sequestre was introduced in 1988. Albi has never hosted a championship F1 race, but it held a Formula Two race in 1967 and we will be using the layout used then. Jackie Stewart won that race in his Matra. He was followed home by Jochen Rindt in a Brabham and Jim Clark, who had spun his Lotus near the Dunlop bridge.

All set for GP length race & my engine croaked on the very first lap.

...and mine half croaked after 11 or 12 laps  Grin
I could continue but 20 seconds/lap slower than usually.
I reached 50% of the distance and even more, it was enough to score some points.

I hope I didn't disturb any other driver.

First run for me at UKGPL after the coronavirus. Alone most of the time and figuring out the Honda and the line every lap. Congratulations Clive and to everyone on the podium. I have not been able to download the replay.

Congrats Clive and Fulvio! Good job Clive.

If my goal was to drive smoothly and consistently, I failed terribly. Luckily, my goal was to finish and have some fun. I did fine with those aspects.

I don't know what happened to me or my car over the last two weeks. One or both didn't work well. 30 minutes before qualifying for the Works race, I looked at my Albi setup and saw that it was very old and a copy of someone else's setup. I loaded what would be a good default for myself and by the end of Works qualifying it felt good and I almost matched my old PB. And it felt real good through the first lap of the Works race but then I got a screen freeze.

This time I was uncomfortable with the car and inconsistent. I had to drive slower than I had hoped. I had one lap in the race where I screwed up every turn. Smiley

I thought I might be running very good by the end of the race. I was only decent. Early in the race Leo was warping too much for me to even think about trying a pass. I let Clive pass thinking he might be able to see Leo better. Last thing I wanted to do at that point was cause an accident or get involved in one. A little while later, I braked a little late before the runway and had to take some evasive action to make sure I didn't hit Clive. Had I braked a tiny bit later that would have ended my race there. I would have had to destroy the car to miss Clive. It felt like I might have knocked the alignment off but I'm not sure. My left tires were heating too much on the outside but I don't think the left rear hit the wall, so maybe my camber settings are off.

It was fun trying to catch Clive. I was a little impatient to get by Fulvio since I couldn't waste any time if I wanted any chance to catch Clive. It took a while but I did it. Twice, he was kind enough to screw up in the first series of turns to let me slipstream on the straight. I was horrible the first time into the runway turn. I was very happy Clive was looking out for me. I could have easily ruined our race. I did a little better the second time but I still quickly returned the lead to him. None of that really mattered though. He would have passed me on the last lap as I began running out of fuel. His pace never allowed me to save any fuel. I lost fuel pressure entering the first straight on the last lap. Otherwise, Clive's margin of victory would have been about 1 second.

I enjoyed this one. It was a little frustrating being off my game a bit, but still a great deal of fun. I thought I'd likely make it interesting for at least one other driver. I doubt Clive thought that was a dull race. Smiley

One thing that did suck was my connection was bad at one point. I knew it was me when I could see three cars disappear for a few seconds. I'm glad I survived that glitch. And it was a little bit irritating I got caught behind Claudio twice in qualifying. But I blame myself for that, I could have been better prepared and he wouldn't have been a problem.

I hope I didn't disturb any other driver.

I wondered what you were doing Dave. I just figured you were cruising for some points. You seemed to do a good job staying out of the way. I only lost time one time lapping a Cooper. And that might not have been you. And that only increased the suspense of whether I'd catch Clive or not.

My apologies for the long post. Thanks for letting me race with you guys. I appreciate it.

Greg has just about summed things up.

When Tris and Markus were eliminated on the first lap, I was fortunate to be able to pick my way through the spinning cars and emerge in 4th place. I had actually done a little practice for this race and I knew that the Brabham setup, that I was using, required 3-4 laps to get sorted. So, with 71 laps ahead I was content to sit in 4th place as the front 4 cars steadily pulled away from 5th.
Once the tyres were warmed and I could "lean" on them a little more I was able to apply some pressure on Greg's Ferrari. Then he strangely yielded 3rd spot on the straight???. Once I was behind Leo I knew why  Roll Eyes!! Sneaky Greg had left me to deal with Leo's blinking and dancing car  Undecided

Well I figured that I had 2 options. Drop back or get past. I had a good run through turns 1,2 and 3 and was able to use the slipstream to slingshot past into Double D. I was mightily relieved to have Leo behind me at last and set about easing up to Fulvio in his Ferrari. Somewhere around this point Greg suddenly dropped back, I presume that is when you had your "incident"?
Fulvio was a tough nut to crack as his Fezza was mighty quick on the straight and he is always a very consistent driver. But eventually he got a wheel on the grass out of T1 and it gave me the chance to force the pass.
Once ahead I concentrated on building a gap back to Fulvio and eventually I had several seconds of breathing space and began to relax into steady 1:12s laps.
It was around half distance when I Pribluda informed me that Greg was on the march and was now in 3rd behind Fulvio. I watched the race between them on Prib hoping that Fulvio would contain Greg's advance, which he did for many laps.....thanks Fulvio  Wink.
But eventually Greg broke free and began to close the gap  scared. My steady pace was not enough and I had to start pushing again to maintain the safety zone.
I almost blew it when I missed a downshift and did a 180 spin ( just about my single mistake in the race!) and my comfortable 400mtr lead was down to 75mtrs.
This gave Greg all the encouragement that he needed and soon he was using the extra power of the Ferrari to threaten me on the straights.  My Brabham seemed to be a little quicker out of the slow corners, provided that I was careful with my right foot and on a couple of occasions I almost escaped his clutches, building a 150mtr cushion, but a small error would undo all of the hard work.

Thee last 25% of the race was intensely close and Greg was a constant threat until he pushed a little too deep into braking for DD and I was able to cut back under him and retake the lead and again on the final corner when he just got a fraction too much sideways and gave me a 250mtr lead with 4 laps to go.
Well thankyou for the gift Greg  Wink, because I knew that we were almost equal on maximum lap pace, so I could afford to sacrifice a little of the gap and stay safe on each lap....until you ran out of gas on lap71. At least I was able to start breathing again on laps 70-71!!
Thanks for a great race Greg  Grin

Grats to all the finishers and commiserations to those who were less fortunate.

Sorry Markus , but why braking so early ?

I was looking forward to a nice duel with you and Fulvio after we were that close during quali. And it seems Clive and Greg were also very fast in the race. It would have been great to take part in that battle for P1. Congrats to Clive for the victory and to Greg and Fulvio for podium places!

After the race I was a bit upset, because where I was about to brake didn't seem too early, but rather appropriate to me. It was the first lap, first corner of a 71 laps race with full tank and cold tires. So I am always a bit careful during the first lap. But the main reason for braking at that point was because I thought I would need to share the corner with Fulvio. I could not see him in my mirrors and guessed he was still on the inside. So I prepared to take the corner driving on the outside. I watched the replay and form your car you clearly saw I was already ahead of him so you probably expected me to cut the corner in front of him.

The only thing I am still a bit wondering is that you get that close to the tail of my car directly before the braking point (on the first corner in the first lap) without leaving you the opportunity to react to where ever my braking point may be. Frankly speaking I think that is not worth the risk with such a long race to go.

However, I hope we will soon get another chance to duel with each other. In case there will be a similar lap one situation I can tell you I will very likely brake a bit earlier again especially when there are other cars close to me (like Fulvio).
