Season 38 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 9 –  Imola

For the penultimate round of this series, it is the 1968 F1 (Early) cars sets at Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, Imola,

The track was inaugurated in 1953, and it had no chicanes, so the run from Rivazza all the way to Tosa, through the pits and the eventually notorious Tamburello was totally flat out, as was the run from Acque Minerali all the way to Rivazza was just a long straight with a few small bends; and the circuit remained in this configuration until 1972. Long time home of the San Marino Grand Prix (and once of the Italian Grand Prix) the circuit is fast, bumpy and dangerous.
After the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna in 1994, the track was remodelled to reduce speeds but we use the original, high speed layout.

If you don’t have the 68 Mod, go to this site http://68f1.gplworld.de/downloads.htm
Save Download 1 & Download 3 - you will need them both. Follow the installation instructions & select the 68 car sets in GEM.

The Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2), 1968 and 1969. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group and keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Groups 7, 8 or 9.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Full Driver lists and divisional rules including manufacturer groups can be found here Championship Standings page

Just as an experiment, I'll be running with NO anti-aliasing or Anisotropic Filtering on my Nvidia card for this race to see if I can avoid a FREEZE.

Perhaps we should all do it, just to see if we can go FREEZE free. Join me if you wish.

Thanks for being honest Tris. I appreciate the rules can get a bit confusing, we'll try to simplify things for next season.

Well that turned out to be a fantastic race for me. I got a decent start (thankfully I wasn't behind Dave C who missed the start Wink ) and I was very fortunate to avoid a number of incidents up front and after 2 laps I found myself in the lead  eek. After making a mess of my last 2 races I made a big effort to concentrate and drive consistently. It was working too but I gradually got overhauled by Tris and Tom, but I still held a strong 3rd place and a podium position in a field of this quality was going to be a great result. However, Fulvio and Pete gradually reeled me in and the last 10 laps were very hectic. I managed to keep Fulvio's Cooper at bay for several laps but then Pete nipped past Fulvio. Pete's BT26 had a bit more power than Fulvio's Cooper and he put me under serious pressure. I went a bit wide at Tamburello and to make things worse I missed my shift up to 5th (selected third twice and nearly popped the motor!) which lost me loads of momentum and both Pete and Fulvio swept by. I battled my way back past Fulvio but Pete was long gone. Very enjoyable race with Pete and Fulvio, very competitive but very clean. It was a pleasure to race with you both tonight.

Same for me Phil and Pete, and Tom too that was patience to pass me. Fantastic race, I was all wet in the end!  laugh

Firstly an apology to Billy No Brakes. So sorry for that silly move I tried which took us both out for a while. Hopefully you got away without a Shift_R. I had the red mist in my eyes. I'll explain.

I made a great start from P2 and got away better than Tristan. It's silly to hold him back so I let him take the lead into Tosa. Cold tyres, a full tank and over enthusiasm joined forces at Acqua Minerala which meant I slid wide into the fence. All I could do was sit and wait for the whole pack to pass before rejoining at the back. Great. 1st to last in under 40 seconds Sad

To my surprise there was some sort of mayhem taking place at the top of the hill which I managed to navigate through cleanly. My next mission - to catch Phil and Fulvio. I needed to finish ahead of them to remain at the top of the Privateers' championship. Heart pounding and red mist in my eyes meant some untidy driving for a few laps. Billy - sorry I tried to get past. Being patient at that stage was not on my agenda. I took an unnecessary risk and it ended in tears for us both. Thankfully nothing terminal for either of us. I've learned my lesson - patience is key at a track like this. No need to rush with 15 laps to go. Still friends?

I had a quick car under my seat and I could see Fulvio and Phil having a fun battle ahead of me. Catching is one thing in GPL but passing is another. Fulvio, your Cooper was so hard to get past. I had a good tow a few times but not in useful places. When I finally did get past on the run into Tosa, I was lucky to hold the line to make the tight left-hander. My tyres were on the edge of grip. Yikes.

Phil, your Honda was mighty fast and I was only able to pass through your mis-fortune with the gears. Bad luck on that one.

So, really pleased with 3rd overall. We can't expect more with Tom and Tristan on the track. Thanks for some superb racing at Imola, especially Fulvio and Phil for those awesome ten laps or so. GPL is just the BEST.

The car & GPL volume were working fine this time - which was fortunate because Imola is one of my favourite tracks.

Pete - apology noted. No major harm done. You were considerably quicker than me & I wouldn't have held you up - just didn't expect a pass going into the corner.

Christian - I assume you did realise that (some) of the '68 & 69 cars have wing settings. If you don't change the angle in the Set Up page then they will be at zero. I'm not sure what the best wing settings are for this track but the extra downforce makes a noticeable difference to lap times.
I mention this because I noticed your lap times at Vallelunga were comparably much quicker than Imola.

Billy, Too funny !!
Well I saw the settings for the wings but as, neither on the photos, nor on the racing cars I saw a wing, I thought that on these 68Early, there was none. not yet ... So I rode without a wing! Shocked (So I may have a chance to make better times ... Wink)

In theory, the ones we drove don't have a wing !! even less adjustable!  Huh Roll Eyes
