Season 38 – 1967 Sprint F1 WORKS – Round 9 – Reims
The ninth race in the 1967 Sprint series finds us at Reims in France.  The circuit is basically several long straights with a couple of hairpins and a few cornfields. Catching a tow is what this track is about. It normally produces close racing. Reims-Gueux was first established in 1926 on the public roads between the small French villages of Thillois and Gueux. The circuit had two very long straights between the towns, and teams strove to maximize straight-line speed of their cars; many slipstream battles ensued. Race organizers actually felled trees and demolished old houses in order to make the circuit even quicker. International racing came with the first official Formula One event occurring in 1950, the inaugural year of the Formula One world championship. The circuit layout was shortened and changed in 1952 to bypass the town. In the 1954 race, the long-awaited Mercedes W196 with its straight-8 fuel-injection engine made its debut with Juan Manuel Fangio transferring from Maserati to join an otherwise all-German line-up of Hans Herrmann, Karl Kling and pre-war driver Hermann Lang. It was a dominant return with Fangio recording a practice lap of 124.31 mph. He and Kling led away and continued to race side by side around the Reims track. The Ferrari drivers simply couldn't cope with the pace. There was no race at Reims in 1955 and when the Grand Prix circus returned in 1956, it was without the silver arrows. Fangio dominated again but this time in a resurgent Ferrari team who's drivers also claimed the remaining podium places.

I hope it doesn't. But if it's rerun, I might miss it. Sad

I'm unable to join this race as my GPL woes have multiplied. Nothing recognised now, rasterisers have disappeared etc. Guess I'll need to find the time to reinstall everything, because piecemeal app replacement has just made things worse....

Sorry about that Tris. Did you try to connect via iGOR or directly via GPL? If you tried to connect via GPL you needed to use the correct port number (32666)

Man, of course very good pace in qualifying paired with a good getaway and some distance to 2nd after crossing the start-finish line after lap 1 had to mean that I would bottle it in lap 2 at Yaogo de Murizon. I outbroke myself and quickly wanted to get back on track. Behind the wall there was one house, first I thought to myself that I would rather drive around it, but when I got close to it, the texture disappeared, so my immediate conclusion was that the house must only be a texture. Of course it was solid and I drove straight into it, and when I got back on track I quickly noticed that I lost a bit of horsepower.
After that incident the race was super painful, still some slipstreaming now and then allowed me to stay close to the pack which fought for P4 or P5. But then it all ended for me when I tried to put a dumb, impatient move on Doni into T2 which sent us both wide into the fields. I almost thought that Doni got stuck in there, but when Pribluda revealed that he was still running, I let him catch up by an entire kilometer to let him by.
Without a slipstream I was unable to go at anyones pace bar Andreas' Brabham, and so I drove a lonely race to the end... well, not quite, I lost it into the last corner and had a wheel come off.
See you at Hockenheim. Smiley

Congrats Axel, Bob, and Frank! It was nice to see Axel get a win this season. It looks like we still have a battle between Frank and Bob for the championship.

I enjoyed this one. The only problem I had was a small lack of discipline. I guess I thought trying to do a 1:58 in the race was more fun than winning. It's a shame I had such a slow recovery.

I was happy when Bob got the lead with me in P2. It looked like it might be a great day for Team Baarf. Even though I did pass Bob once, I tried to leave him some room in front of me. I was a little worried I might need the slipstream so I couldn't leave him too much room. I was disappointed to see him go off the track but I was relieved when I saw that he was still running a few laps later.

Thanks for the fun guys. I appreciate it.
