Moderator's Report

Summary
A well-deserved win for Mark Jones, taking pole position and fastest lap in the process. Tristan showed incredible pace in the Lola but after an incident at the start has been demoted allowing Doni to grab second place and Francesco to secure the final step on the podium. Doni and Francesco fought a race-long battle with Doni’s masterful race craft making the difference in the end.

Server replay time: 0h01m00s

Lap 1 – Dunlop Curve – Mark Jones and Tristan Bot
Mark gets a decent start from pole which is on the right-hand side of the track giving him the inside line into Dunlop Curve. Tristan gets an even better start from third place and as the field approached the famous clock, Tristan darted across to the left-hand side of the track. As Mark and Tristan start to round Dunlop Curve, they are side by side. Tristan is on the racing line but Mark is still ahead and has maintained his position on the right-hand side of the track. As they approach the apex, Tristan moves across in an effort to take the racing line but Mark’s Ferrari is already occupying that piece of tarmac. Contact is made and both cars spin out causing a massive pile-up involving eleven other cars (thirteen in total). Thankfully everyone could continue but the field was split up and the chance of an entertaining race with lots of close racing and slipstreaming had been lost for most drivers.

Mark Jones – Mark did nothing wrong. He maintained his line off the start line and was ahead in Dunlop Curve. He correctly stayed on his own side of the track until it was safe to move over.

Tristan Bot – Tristan was too eager to get ahead. His move to the left-hand side of the track shortly after the start was unnecessary and bordering on reckless. Fortuitously, Markus made a slow start which left the gap for Tristan, but with a grid full of red Ferraris it was very difficult to clearly identify which car was in the rear-view mirror. Even driving in chase view (F10) it is hard to see a clear gap to Markus’s car had opened up. Luckily no contact was made. On the entry to Dunlop Curve, Tristan was on the racing line but this does not mean he had right of way. Tristan should have stayed on the left-hand side of the track until he was clearly ahead of Mark. The UKGPL rules and driving etiquette are very clear, drivers must not move across the track unless it is safe to do so. The responsibility for the incident lies with Tristan.

Server replay time: 0h01m02s

Lap 1 – Dunlop Curve – Cookie and maddog
Cookie doesn’t get a great start, possibly because he was behind Markus who was also slow away. Consequently, he is passed by Evil before the Dunlop Curve and Martin (maddog) takes the opportunity to move up the inside. As they start to turn-in Martin has a good overlap (over 100%) but he is still in Cookie’s blind spot. The mayhem ahead must have distracted both drivers and as the cars approach the apex, contact is made and both cars spin out.

Martin did nothing wrong. He was entitled to attempt to overtake, and he kept to his side of the track. However, it would have been safer not to attempt a pass unless it was obvious that sufficient overlap could be achieved such that he could be clearly seen by his opponent.

Cookie couldn’t see Martin in his mirrors, he hadn’t initiated the move and so he wasn’t to know Martin was on his inside. Nevertheless, he should have stayed on the left-hand side of the track until he was certain the cars had settled down into their positions. Moving across the track at the start, or before any sizable gaps have developed, is fraught with difficulty particularly with so many of the same cars in the same colour scheme on the grid.

  • Cookie (Axel Cookie)penalty — Simple Side by Side contact: Penalty 1 Place + extra place for lap 1 — 2 places lost

Season 38 - SC67 - Lola vs Ferrari Cup – Round 10 Le Mans by Night

WIP

Round 10 and the finale of the S38 Lola vs Ferrari Cup we visit Le Mans by Night,
we will be racing the night version because of the better stability.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world's oldest active sports car race in endurance racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, France. It is one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world and is often called the "Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency". The event represents one leg of the Triple Crown of Motorsport; other events being the Indianapolis 500, and the Monaco Grand Prix.

Please check the Season 38 details regarding rules and the Lola vs Ferrari Cup pages in particular.
In order to add an element of realism, and to hopefully reduce the possibility of rear-end incidents, the brake light patch will be used  eek

"Works" drivers will carry extra weight in form of 10 gallons of race fuel (to remain in the tank after the race). No limit in quali!
Drivers are expected to behave in a fair and gentlemanly fashion and declare how much fuel they have left after the race.

In order to ensure there will be ~10 gallons of fuel left after the race, the minimum race fuel load for Works is expected to be:

  • Lola T70 = 34 gallons (~128 litres)
  • Ferrari P4 = 35 gallons (~132 litres)

2 x resets will be allowed there is no need to carry out a Stop and Go in the pit lane if you make a Shift-R.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.
Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Hi everyone!

I did a 6 laps test run with the Ferrari and I have a fuel consumption of 6.05l per lap. That makes 90,75 for 15 laps. If I am right works drivers should start with around 131l instead of the 114l mentioned in the race post (10 gallons = ~40l). Otherwise that would be a great advantage for the works drivers.

Can anyone confirm this? Or is my fuel consumption per lap just extremely high?

Noting your post above, Markus, I just ran off a three-lap trial in the Ferrari.  Used 4.7 USG.  For the 15-lap race, I would anticipate burning 23.5 USG.  The quoted startline spec of 30 USG for the Ferrari might be a tad light then.

I will test it today, of course this is a very long full throttle track...

Just look in here later, or read the chat in quali Wink

I just testet: 4 laps  24 liter = 6 liter per lap

So the min fuel should be 132 liter 35 gal for the Ferrari (90+40)

Such a shame about the turn 1 .. I was at the back and it was like a friday afternoon on the M25.  total carnage. but thats LeMans for you.  Huh

I have never had a good race here, but like so many of my other unloved tracks Im improving no end just by enjoying competing. Another best PB. 6 or more seconds behind the rest of you guys but good for me, hope it went well for the rest of the runners.

I had to take a couple of resets, and both times after the reset I was put back into the car like normal, and everything was functioning fine... But i had NO throttle.

never had that before, and believe me I have had my share of Resets during my illustrious GPL career .. LOL!  So I decided to call it a Night.

I wasnt really enjoying just circulating at the back anyway.

Really enjoyed this seasons racing. Thanks Mods for all your hard work and thanks fellas for some good evenings spent Racing good 'ol GPL.

Looking forwards to next season already.  Intend to do the 65s if they are running again. Hopefully some F2 stuff and the open wheel championship is Brilliant.

Cheers All. Paul .

Unexpected result for me thanks to the accidents on the first lap.The race was a battle with Doni and Phill ,both  have a few more things than me but Phil finished the battle on the embankment.

You drove very well Fran and deserved your 4th place. We had a great 10 laps dicing with Doni. Doni timed his move to perfection and I couldn't close the gap on the last lap. I tried to get a better drive out of Virage de Mulsanne but I over did it and ended up running wide and onto the banking. The championship is tight, I've no idea who has won, the permutations are too complicated to work out in my head. I'll have to wait until the results are imported.

*** Update ***
Well subject to moderation (but I'm not aware of any incidents pending which may affect me and Doni), it looks like Doni has won the Privateers by 4 points from me. If I had managed to stay ahead of Fran I would have gained an extra 6 points. That last lap mistake was decisive.

Grats Doni, a worthy champion  clap

Little frustrated here, when some driver want to win the 24h in T1  Huh

The rest was catch as catch can - no fun for me   Embarrassed

My race was very much over after T1 as well. Afterwards I was somewhat frustrated and when Axel and I tried to make up positions we touched again and soon after I also had a coming together with Paul (I think it was you Paul). I simply misjudged your speed after the last left hander before the start-finish straight and slid into you. I tried to avoid you by going onto the grass but to no avail. Sorry.
Afterwards I was able to overtake a few drivers without anymore incidents. But I was so far back that I settled for a P7. Last lap Evil was out of the race, what happened to you?

To be honest, it is also somewhat frustrating that the initiators of the turn one mess still finished at the front of the pack. After Tristan and Mark touched I tried to stay to the right but was not able to avoid Marks wrack that bounced back from the wall. I guess I was not the only one whose race was ruined...

Anyway, congrats Mark. Your speed was beyond compare today. And congrats to Tristan for winning the SC championship!

And also a big congrats to Doni for P3!!

I was really disgusted for what happened at T1. Not really UKGPL standard. There were two separate contact between front runners that caused the mayhem, but there were many lost of controls behind that caused way more problems. Please watch all of us the replay and think what we could have done better.
Lap 2 I had to reset again cause I was involved in another crash from a harahiri move ahead at the fast bend at the end of the straight. Then again I missed a crash at Maison Blanche for pure luck. Soon after I moved over at T2 to not be rear ended on braking.
It was like playing Fast and Furious for the first two laps. Please fast gentleman, be patient when you catch a slower driver after a mistake...
Said that, I'm very surprised to end this season in third behind the two aliens, it's like a win for me.  Smiley

Some have already commented on T1 and I can only agree. Of course each driver is trying to be as fast as he can, we are not going to crawl around the first lap at 50kph but we should allow a little more room for each other? I have not watched the replay, so perhaps I was more a culprit than victim. Roll Eyes

I had quite a good launch and the inside line opened up into T1, so I hugged the inside barrier and eased off to be sure that I did not drift wide. I think Axel was to my left and running the wider line. Then I saw cars in the air up ahead and eased back even more. Getting through a crashfest like that has far more to do with pure luck than any driver skill. Initially it looked like both cars involved were tumbling towards the outside of the bend and for about 2 secs I thought that my inside line would take me through.....but then it all changed and both cars bounced back across the track and I hit the brakes hard.
It was clear that I was going straight at the wreckage, and that I could not stop my car in time and anyway the pack was coming in fast behind me?
A gap opened on the outside line and probably should have ignored it, but instinct made me ease across and I apologise if that move caused problems behind  Sad. It did not help because one of the cars involved in the original incident was now trying to close that gap and succeeded in clipping  my Fezza and I was upside down for what felt like the next Km.
After a reset I had quite a lonely race. Slowly easing away from my Blue Moo.se team mate Doni and watching Mark ease away from Tris up ahead. Tris had a moment at about half distance and for a few laps I was chasing him hard. But a small touch on the barriers at T2 and a half spin allowed Tris to escape again.
3rd place was guaranteed until the last lap when I foolishly pushed for a PB. Prib was promising a low 1:21 and possibly a 1:20??
Well it all was going to plan and I was faster in each sector until the FINAL corner  Undecided I just clipped the grass on the exit and it unsettled the car....but I kept my right foot planted on the floor. If I had lifted I would have stayed on the tarmac and taken 3rd spot, but instead I ran out on to the grass and hit the concrete wall. After much spinning around I was facing the wrong way but still engine running. I tried to spin the car around but only succeeded in sticking it into the fence.................it was then that I discovered that I had no reverse gear!!!!

I was not a happy person!

I agree with the comments about the lap 1 turn 1 incident, very disappointing. On this track, more than any other, it is impossible to win on lap 1; everyone should be driving with maximum consideration for others. The incident has been reported so I don't want to prejudice the moderation process but the server replay is available for everyone to see.

The key lesson here for everyone is to stay on your own side of the track until it is safe to move over. The rules on etiquette describe when it is safe to move over and when it is not. There is a link to a page showing the views in the mirrors.

Drivers should not move across until they can see the whole of the opponent's car in their mirrors. This can be very difficult to achieve, especially at the start and particularly when there are so many of the same cars in the same colours on the grid. So it is easy to get confused but this is no excuse for causing an accident.
