Season 38 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 10 – Works - Buenos Aires

This race announcement is for the WORKS.

The tenth and final race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us in Argentina. Built in 1952 on swampland just outside Buenos Aires, the circuit featured a white archway dedicated to the memory of Admiral William Brown. The track featured four different configurations for Grand Prix racing. From 1953 to 1960, the Argentine Grand Prix was held on the "No. 2" layout, clockwise for the all these years except 1954, when it was run counterclockwise.

The 1955 Argentine Grands Prix was one of the hottest races on record, at 40C (104F) with track temperatures reaching 51C (122F). Fangio, driving for Mercedes, was the only driver to complete the 96 laps (taking three hours) without handing his car over to another driver. One of his legs was badly burned by a chassis tube heated by the exhaust, an injury that forced a three-month recovery. Ferrari drivers Nino Farina and Maurice Trintignant finished both second and third in two three-way shared drives with José Froilán González and Umberto Maglioli respectively.

There was a possibility of combining the servers this week, i.e. just having one server for both the Works and Privateers. However I suspect there there will be more than 19 drivers in total so to ensure nobody misses out, I'll run two servers.

Grats to JonnyO on another race win and the championship. Well done. Unlucky Clive, it looked like you had that race in the bag.

I had a great race with Bastian and Doni until I put a wheel on the grass at T1 and I spun around. Doni and Bastian couldn't avoid me. Sorry gents. Thankfully Doni could continue but Bastian was out. Bastian, I waited for you but when I saw you stationary on my mirrors I had to push on and chase down Doni. It took me a few laps to reel him in but then I couldn't get past. Doni made a tiny mistake at turn 9 on the penultimate lap and so I got a run on him into turn 10. I had the inside line and we were side by side through turns 10 and 11. I just got my nose ahead into turn 1 but I nearly ran wide. I managed to get my braking right into the difficult hairpin (turn 3) but Doni sailed on into the grass leaving me with an easy run to the flag.

Well done Jonny.  I could see you closing me down but just as you came close my engine blew.  I had gained an extra downshift at the hairpin a few laps before and had inadvertently revved the nuts off the poor thing.

So my season ended in much the same way as it started.

Well done to Enrique for his second place.  Hopefully SBRC will be able to contest the team championship next time.

Many thanks to Phil and the crew for running the 55mod championship.  Hope to see you next time.

This mod55 is a good success, always bringing a good number of drivers, although we are sharing the grid unproportionally. Is there any way to solve this? frankly I don't know, we never know who will stop in mid-season.
The world of the GPL nowadays is a small world, on the other hand this leads us to become more and more friends, it is a great pleasure to meet this group every week, see you in the next 55 season!

Maybe use the use the full time and reserve driver already instated, plus pre-confirmation every event to maximise server use with full grid of pros and amatures?

Grats on a fine win there, Jonny!  As well, taking the top step on the podium for our season-long championship.  Admirable.

Great jobs by Ricky & Fulvio to land the remaining podium placings.  Well done.

Poor Clive robbed of a possible win when the engine went sour on his Merc.  Bad luck indeed but at least a fighting P2 in the championship standings.

I had a fine race going with both Bastian & Phil.  There was very little in it on performance til Lap13 when Phil touched the grass verge on the exit of T1, slewed sideways and clipped me as I tried to sneak by on the inside.  It was quite a whack and I don't mind saying the it scared the B-Jesus out of me!  I spun to a halt but was able to continue with minor damage according to GPLRA's Mechanical Report.  I got off light compared to Bas.  He couldn't avoid T-boning Phil which brought his Maser to an abrupt halt and in trying to spool-up the L-6 to resume had it go BANG in a big way.  Exit Bas.  Bad luck to be sure.

I had a handful of seconds on Phil with half the race to run and gradually, he closed in to harry my tail.  As long as I didn't make a crucial mistake, I felt that I had enough to fend him off.  That was all going according to plan...til Lap26.  The tiniest of gaffes in the chicane had me slow coming off that complex and that was all Phil needed to make his bid.  I couldn't see him in my mirrors so knew it was on.  Of course, I could have eased to the right to cover the inside line approach to the hairpin but that's Formula 3 tactics.  This is Formula 1.

We rounded that corner side-by-side and gassed it up pit straight.  For a moment there, I thought I had recovered the place and started to ease right  but a quick stab of my 'Look Right' button on the G25 steering wheel showed Phil right alongside.  YIKES!  Cancel that move!  With my run through the last corner before the S/F line somewhat compromised, Phil took the place on the run down to T1.  I pushed him hard into and out of that corner where on setting up for the hairpin, I saw a faint hope up the inside.  It soon became apparent that I wasn't going to make it stick and rather than drill PT in the tail decided to swing wide to the left and figuratively fall on my sword.  Got back on track some distance behind to finish P5.  Another fine chapter in the 'Phil & Doni Show' which has been raging for fully a couple of seasons now across all the mods.  Great fun and well done to you, Phil.

I see by the championship standings that I needed that P5 placing to hold P3 in the final tabulations.  Lucky to finish only a handful of points ahead of Ricky, Fulvio and the absent Raoni.  PHEW!

Thanks to the club for organizing.  See you next season!  Smiley

Looking at the qualifying times from the Privateer race I would say that Leo and Geovanni have developed their 55mod technique to a level where they should be in the Pro ranks.
