Season 39 - CANM71 – Round 1 –  Daytona Road Circuit

Something a bit different for the first Round, the Daytona International Speedway at Daytona Beach, Florida. The venue is famous for the oval used for the prestigious Daytona 500 NASCAR race. We will use the sports car course which combines high speed oval racing with big 180 degree turns often seen on US tracks.
Remember the start is not the finish line - your lap counts when you are just leaving the oval part of the track.
Look for Front Stretch Wink

Please check the Season 39 pages for details regarding rules and the CanAm 1971 pages in particular.

Handicapping
The cars will be divided into five groups, each group containing cars of similar performance.
Drivers will be graded as either "Professional", "Intermediate" or "Amateur".
Drivers will be limited to cars from specific groups based on their grade
and must choose 2 cars and drive them an equal number of times.

Rolling Start!

In RL CanAm started rolling Wink
We do a rolling start to the exit of T1 in one line following the polesetter ~100mph

Incidents will not be moderated as we race as gentlemen.
One Shift-R is allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.

Why Huh

You can drive all cars but the 2 supercars, a Porsche e.g. is very smooth to drive.

These cars are new to me as well. I tend to drive them like the 55s... smoothly and gently on the gas. Please join us as you're not alone in finding them a challenge.

I agree that these cars are a challenge Phillipe. Probably the most powerful cars that we have in GPL.
Just as in real life they have far more power than the tyres can hope to contain ( except the Porsche, but even that car is powerful ).

The biggest problem with the default settings that I get is snap oversteer out of corners, so either try a higher gear  ( maybe 2nd instead of 1st? ) or change your gearbox ratios so that it limits the sudden surge of power. Braking early is to be recommended, as the speed of these monsters is deceptive and running too deep and wide is easy.

These cars have enormous torque and avoiding wheelspin out of slow corners is the secret, just as was required in real life. Once the car is straightened up you can pour in the gas and hold on tight, because the horizon will be pulled towards you very quickly  Shocked.

PS.
I will be testing the Porsche later and if I can build a safe setup, I am happy to share it with anyone who is struggling. I also have an old setup for the Ferrari which is good for 1:42 lap? with some work it might be a little faster? and I am also going to test the Lola 222.

I am limited to the 3 slower groups and presumably the less powerful cars, but there is not that much difference? But, as Axel suggests, maybe select a car with less torque that is comfortable to drive? because for sure there will be many retirements with bent cars and simply finishing will be a success.

Philippe, I've tried some laps in the Porsche and it's great. As Evil suggests, go easy on the throttle and brake early. I was getting 1:42s in no time at all. You'll easily be able to do it with your driving talent.

Great racing with lots of action...

I made some mistakes but could recover quickly, that was a very entertaining way to race - action in all laps  Grin

Congratulations to our podium finishers!  Well done, lads.

A couple of goofy errors put me well behind.  Dead last at one point.  Managed to pick up the pieces and gain some places thanks to the misfortune of others chief amongst those being Fulvio with a last-lap reset.  Bad luck there to say the least.

Hoping for a better run at Spa.

Note for Philippe...  Please keep your position on pace laps.  You were supposed to start behind me.

Although I finished I consider this first failed race ... Sad
I had to make a shiftR after my engine broke for some reason that I do not know ... it was not too high in temperature and I did not have not (I think) pushed too high in the towers!

The start of the race was much less easy than during my private practice !! But after having benefited from a few incidents, I am 3rd until my engine breaks ... the time to realize that I can use the shiftR Roll Eyes, I go down to 7 or 8!
A little distracted, the rest of the race will not be easy despite the power of the Lola (probably the setup to review!) some fights short ... a lot of tension with these cars  Smiley

Maybe to reread the starting procedure ... it seems to me that the first one (s) left well above 100mph and well in front, causing the rest of the conquerors to be largely stretched ... (not really important concerning my classification Wink! but just for the respect of the procedure Wink)
