Your typical wild & crazy stuff at Monaco.
What would a race be here without a massive T1, Lap01 shunt? True to form, there was one and wonder of wonders, I managed to avoid it. That put me well up the order and after things settled down a bit, I found myself chasing Fulvio. To my surprise, I was actually able to close in with the JoBo McLaren. For many a lap, we ran in close company. It seemed that I was faster in the first and last 1/3 of any given lap but in the middle section down by the harbourfront, FP could scamper away to a comfy margin. It was also apparent, too, that if I were to gain the place, Fulvio would have to make a major mistake.
With 10 laps to run, I took a peek at my fuel level. GULP! Just 3USG left and my brief pre-race trials showed I could only run nine laps with that fuel load. I started to short-shift having no option but to let Fulvio pull away. In the last couple of laps, I started taking corners a gear higher than normal where possible and coasting a bit into corners. It paid off as I made the line just a few seconds ahead of Bot with just 17 psi showing on the fuel pressure gauge. No way I would have been able to make another lap. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.
