Season 39 - 69X – Round 3 –  Roosevelt Raceway 1937

Following the end of the Great Depression, George Washington Vanderbilt III, George Preston Marshall and Eddie Rickenbacker raised money to build a new home for the dormant Vanderbilt Cup, which had last been run in 1916. 1908 Vanderbilt Cup winner George Robertson was hired to oversee construction of the facility. The land was acquired by lease of the land that was "Unit 2" of the Roosevelt Field airport, and was the site of the runway from which Charles Lindbergh took off in the Spirit of St. Louis. The original raceway was twisty and bumpy, not quite suited to the big-bore big-BHP racecars of the day, and a number of the drivers did not like the track. The 1937 layout was faster, with fewer corners and longer straights. Despite these adaptations, no GP motor car races were held there afterwards.
The track has been recreated in at least two racing games, Spirit of Speed 1937 and the Grand Prix Legends racing simulation.

Please check the Season 39 pages for details regarding rules and the 1969x F1 pages in particular.

Handicapping
The cars will be divided into five groups, each group containing cars of similar performance.
Drivers will be graded as either "Professional", "Intermediate" or "Amateur".
Drivers will be limited to cars from specific groups based on their grade
and must choose 2 cars and drive them an equal number of times.

Incidents will not be moderated as we race as gentlemen.
One (1x) Shift-R is allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.

This should be a fun round.  I'll attempt to qualify the Eagle provided that it can lap within the 110% rule.  I have pre-determined figures that will enable me to assess my chances.  If it looks like I'll not make the cut, I'll ditch the Blue Bird for my BT24.

Looking at the championship standings, I note that Bot has yet to be disqualified from the Spa race thanks to four resets.  Please correct this ASAP.

I had a great start from P9 and took a place from Phillipe. I decided to take a wide line to avoid any T1 incidents but got clipped by a sliding Axel. Rejoining, I bounced around a bit with Doni's Eagle (sorry) but as far as I can tell, none of us had to reset. The next 13 laps were a great battle with Evil, Dave R, Fulvio and Andreas. So much fun trying to keep up in the slippery Lotus 49. I wasn't enjoying the circuit earier in the evening but come the race, I was loving it. Dave - it's a real shame that your BRM went BANG with a couple of laps to go. Andreas, thanks for the super-close finish. 0.07 sec. Smiley  I'm really pleased - another race without a shift-r.

Grats to the podium guys and all finishers.

Lack of pre race practice was my downfall. The circuit was easy enough to learn, although remembering which of all the corners were the slower ones was key to avoiding a spin. But it was my setup, or lack of setup, that proved my biggest problem.

Several adjustments during qualifying showed that I was developing some decent pace on race fuel. The mistake that I made was only running 3-4 laps after each adjustment. It felt great as the tyres warmed and the grip improved and I was looking forward to the race. I miraculously weaved my way through T1 and was beginning to enjoy some close racing in the early laps.

What I only discovered after 6 laps of close racing was that I was cooking my front tyres and after 7-8 laps I could not make the beast turn in for corners!! So, then I had to back off and allow things to cool before going again. I won't mention the numerous clunks against the barrier ( as a result of the terminal understeer ) that gradually deranged the steering/braking. Things got so bad by around 75% distance that I had to reset.
By now I was at the tail end of the field with a heavy car and a couple more bumps against the barriers provided me with a car that I could not even get around the final corner without 2 spins!! lol
Note to myself.... " more preparation"   Roll Eyes

Yeah, although I couldn't improve in the race, it was a very exciting race. There were some nice duels, especially with Pete.
Congratulations to the podium.

Congratulations to our podium finishers!  A special shout-out to Dave Curtis for snagging P2 and actually leading for a bit.  Well done.

I was greatly disappointed to not run the Pease Eagle.  In pre-race trials, I'd managed a best of 2m00.40s as best and applying the 110% cutoff rule meant that if anyone surpassed a lap of 1m49.45s, I'd be excluded.  Yannick set pole with a 1m49.14s lap.  Bugger!  Fie on thee, Yannick!  Parking the Eagle, I brought out the BT24 Brabham which was considerably faster and I easily made the grid.  Why use the Pease Eagle at all?  I saw Al Pease drive dozens of times at Mosport in a variety of cars and was a top gun club racer.  As for my driving the Eagle, I'm in this for fun.  My ego doesn't need a top up, thanks.  RIP, Al...

As for the race, I managed to survive the T1, Lap01 scrum even with a nudge from Pete and soldiered on to score a decent P13 finish.  Without resets by the competition, that would have been a fine P7.

Note to Andreas...

You passed me starting Lap03 and you were fully visible with a good image ahead as you swept into T1.  However, part way through Lap04 with your car now some distance ahead and setting up for T7, I could have sworn that you winked out for a moment.  I've just confirmed this in my personal replay cap and the server copy.  Your ISP still not doing you any favours, mate.
