Season 39 – 1968 EARLY – Round 3 –  Spa

Welcome to the first full season of the 1968 Early Mod – when racing cars evolved to grow wings. We will be using a selection of tracks from the original 1968 season. For each race drivers will be able to select from a group of 4 cars that have relatively similar performance levels.

There is no handicapping.

The third round will take place on the updated version of Spa Francorchamps – or Spa 67. The actual 1968 race was won by Chris Amon in the Ferrari, with the fastest lap set by John Surtees in a Honda.

The car set is Group II;
Honda RA301
Honda RA302
Eagle T1G
Matra MS10

Full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the season 39 general rules on the championship standings page.

Please read the specific rules for 68 series on the 1968 Early championship standings page.

Chris Amon never won a championship GP.
In 1968, the Belgium GP winner was Bruce McLaren driving a McLaren but Amon was the poleman  Wink

Yep, Chris was one of the most unlucky driver of F1 history. With Ferrari he was at top, but never won.

My error - Chris Amon was in first place AT THE BEGINNING OF THE RACE (pole position).
If it had been run the same way as the 2021 GP at Spa, he would have been the winner.
As David has quite correctly stated Bruce McLaren was first AT THE END OF THE RACE.
I shall check my facts next time.

I ruined my race on lap 1 so nothing more to say, i recovered some positions and engaged a beautiful Battle for 9th Place with Fulvio but that move before blanchimont Fulvio, i think it's your mistake, i was ahead of you and on the racing line, i'll watch the replay However.

I threw it all away on L2 tryng to take the Masta kinks too fast with full tank of fuel. Had fun with Fulvio and Giovanni with about 5 laps to go and then went from 5th to 2nd gear on Burnenville. Oops. Dave Rainier and I had fun chasing each other down but on the last lap we collided at the Masta kinks. No problem - just racing  laugh

Not a great evening. I was too tired to concentrate and made silly mistakes. See you all next time

Sorry Giovanni, it was a great battle.
Anyway I think I didn't any bad move, in my replay I was well inside and ahead of you entering the right bend and I kept my right side. Maybe a bad warp?
It was the only chance to pass in the end, and maybe you could have overbraked me at La Source.
Next battle  Smiley

Edit cause I mistaken resets allowed with Friday races  Embarrassed
Indeed I had a crash at lap 1 and didn't any reset cause I thought that there was only one to spare. The car was a bit damaged, but driveable so I went on. I think that also Clive forgot the rule cause scared the hell out of Giovanni and me with a slow bad engined car before Burneville.  Grin

It's racing Fulvio no worries, yes you were well inside... With 2 wheels on the grass. Roll Eyes Maybe was a desperate move for both, maybe i could have kept a wider line, maybe you could have backed off as i was turning on the racing line, but it's hard to judge at 300 kmh without a good lateral view.

One of my worst drives in a while.

The Eagle felt like it was closer to Group III (along with the RA302, I suppose, but I haven't really driven that car yet haha) than Group I. It gets beaten by the Honda on a straight which I didn't really expect.

The first few laps were good fun for the lead, until Tristan got it wrong in Eau Rouge and I couldn't slow it down to avoid contact Sad (third consecutive time we made contact in four days, big yikes). There was no keeping up with the top three, so I battled with Phil for 4th until I decided to be a complete a*** and did a "Look, mom, no hands!" moment and crashed and needed to reset. Eventually I carried it home to 6th after another crash.

This race was a very bad run, cannot make much else of it.

I have come to the conclusion I only drive this track to find new places to crash. Should have chosen the Papyrus version of Spa!

There was an almost identical overtake between me and Yannick on lap 7 (replay time 0h24m16s) after Yannick made a small error on the exit of La Carrière. I was concerned Yannick hadn't seen me so I took rather more grass than Fulvio. I needn't have worried Yannick stayed wide and there was no chance of any contact. It is a difficult place to pass and both drivers need to make allowances for each other. The more we race together, the more we will learn to understand each other's driving styles and abilities, and the less contact there will be in these "50/50" incidents.

I wondered what happened there, you took me by surprise and I nearly followed you into the trees!

Thanks for the close battle, it was fun. Whilst you had an off day, it was a red letter day for me. I think it will be a long time before I can again finish a race ahead of you and Tristan in a straight fight with no handicapping Roll Eyes
