Another race that goes to prove that I cannot drive Porsches. I know this one is mid-engined but it was still beyond me how Daz & Manfred were getting around the track 3s faster. I even tried Daz's setup but was no faster than with my own. Still after spinning twice on the opening lap I had quite a fun race in the end battling with Erling & 4th place was finally settled by who made the least mistakes, err that will be Erling.  Roll Eyes

Congrats to DD on another comfortable win & to Daz & Manfred on the podium.  clap clap clap

I quite enjoyed driving the Porsche around Imola. Not my favourite car and also not a fan of this version of Imola either but once I had a handle on how to approach turns it was quite nice. That is until I had a wobble coming into Tamburello and hit one of the indestructible tyre post's. This wrecked the suspension and made the car undriveable. So after a lengthy pit stop I had dropped to the back of the field, a lap down on everyone. Still I was determined to finish and thanks to others suffering miss-fortunes my position improved and I bagged me some points, yay!

Quite looking forward to taking the Escort around Spa in February.

A depressing race really. Seeing other drivers lap 5 secs faster than you, and eventually lapping you, is ok - if they're driving a faster car!  When they're in the same car as yourself, it's quite sobering, humiliating actually.

1st lap wasn't a good one for me - at Tosa, Geoffers spun in front of me. On cold tyres I couldn't get the car to turn in enough to pass him on the inside, so had to go the long way around, on the grass.  Lost 3 places as a result, when Tony, Clive & Matt all zipped past.  Later that lap, at Rivazza, Robby had problems braking downhill. Narrowly missing me, he took out Matt ahead of me instead, all to my benefit.

Caught and passed Clive recovering from an off, but in the faster Escort, he just needed the appropriate place to power past.  Mistake from Tony helped me past, now back in 6th.  After some laps with Clive moving away, and the gap to Tony slowly growing, I noticed another 914 behind Tony. Wondered if it was Matt, but a quick check revealed it to be Geoffers. "Hell, had forgotten all about him!!".  He soon caught up and a long battle ensued, first for 6th, but later 4th, after Hristo's & Clive's untimely exits.  Small mistake from me let Geoffers past, but he threw it away again later that same lap, when he suddenly veered off ahead of me.

Battle continued when he caught up again.  New mistake from me while being distracted by a lapping DD, gave him another opportunity to get past.  Some laps later I found him recovering after an off and passed him again.  Believe he had another one, further extending the gap. He gradually reeled me in again, getting the last bit by a bigger mistake by me at Tamburello. Then Manfred showed up however, interrupting proceedings. Seemed Geoffers lost time by and after letting him past, as he had vanished once Manfred caught and lapped me.

Grats to DD, Daz & Manfred. Commiserations to the early retirees.

Very strong performance until Hristo was there, chasing me.

I had a strategy to get the faster car on the slower car to clinch a third victory in the tournament and decide almost everything. It happened, sort of.

I had trouble during the qualifying with less fuel, as the car was going oversteerish. But at the end I was able to make a stable lap, just 1 tent slower than my personal best. The personal best though was with fuel for the whole race so I believe if I was able to make the perfect lap 02 was going to be possible here.

The start was OK, I was able to keep in front of flying Daz and Hristo had some trouble. Until he was able to overtake Manfred and Daz I had 2 seconds lead which gave me the comfort to breath easy.

During the first 7-8 laps the gap was the same - around 2 seconds even though I was definitely not pushing too much as I knew how naughty the car can be. The lap times were great though so even with comfortable driving I was able to lap fast and consistent times.

After Hristo was out of the race I knew I just need to bring the car home.

Grats to Daz and Manfred. They were flying with the slower Porsche. I don't think I had a chance with the same car. Sympathies to Clive and Hristo.

@Tony, I to was saving the Escort for the blast around Spa, couldn't resist that combo at all.

Essentially, I reused the setup I had at Hockenheim as that seemed to go OK. Played with the gearing to give a bit more punch out using 3rd instead of 2nd in a few of the corners, and took some brake power out so that the car didn't lock up as much, but other than that it was the same. I'm not surprised Geoffers didn't go any faster in mine compared to his, I'm not a setup genius by any stretch of the imagination. Looking in my mirrors it did appear that Manfreds car was more stable than mine, a combination of setup and driving style no doubt. Both my setups and my driving style tend to be a bit loose....

I found the time for me came from the corner entry speed. The gearing worked against me in the final chicane, Manfred was taking time from me there for sure, but other than that seemed to be of help at certain parts of the lap, the chicanes at Tamburello and Variante Alta particularly so. When I got the entries really, really right the laptime just came to me, without the corner entry speed the laptime would not come.

Had only done a 2.06.2 in practise, so the 2.05.6 in quali was a surprise. Got a good jump, threatened DD a little but was never going to go past. Just tried to be solid in second whilst I waited for Hristo to catch and go past, knowing that Manfred was who I was racing not Hristo. And quite a race it was, Manfred was, as always, both very fast and very consistent. I was just able to have enough of a gap that he could never quite get to me, and we both made odd little errors now and then where we were on the limit. Eventually I am guessing that his tires cried enough or something, as he seemed to have a couple of moments that gave me some breathing room over the last few laps, but it had been a right struggle to keep him back for as long as I needed to. Even managed to do a race lap better than my quali one, goes to show how hard I had to try when he was behind.

Sorry to Geoffers and Erling that you were left with a bitter taste from the race. I will say that the 914 is a bit of an oddball thing to get pace out of in my experience, and I clearly remember some races at NG where I just was not able to do so. I did actually do some practise for this one, as it can be such an odd car at times I felt the need to give it a go, and I don't always get on very well with Imola in all honesty, and I suppose that paid off. It helped that I had only used the car very recently of course. I know you can drive Porsches Geoff, you have beaten me in the 911 before now..... yes Wink

Don't remember that, apart from the 911 race we had at Sachsenring last year which I somehow contrived to win  Huh  You sure it wasn't in P&G, the 911s in that were really nice to drive as are the RRE ones.

Oesterreichring 70(ish) as well I think.....I'm quite sure there were plenty of other examples in the old NG days as well, they are just lost in the mists of time.

I seem to recall you liking the IROC version in P&G, whereas I preferred the RSR. Still think P&G had the best feel of any sim....

Yeh that IROC 911 was great fun after they altered the physics, when it was first released it was nearly undriveable, it just wanted to swap ends at every corner.

Porsches are oddballs in general. Never liked em much, but ironic as it is, my best result from my (rare) UKGTL races are from Österreichring with RSR... And that car is everything I can't drive: too powerful, rear wheel drive and engine in back.

Apart from some offline testing, I never got into P&G.  Is it all dead now, or are some still running it?

Nappe, know the irony you mention - in the past, I often got my best results on tracks I really didn't like  Smiley
